Keegan has explained the signing of Senegal captain Lamine Diatta as a no-lose situation for Newcastle United.
Lamine Diatta – obviously pleased to join Newcastle
The 32-year-old 6’0″ Senegalese can play anywhere across the back four, but his best and favored position is at center-back.
Lamine has only agreed to sign a contract until the end of this season and that is so he has the chance to prove he’s worth a longer and more attractive contract.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating so we’ll get a chance to see just how good Lamine is before the end of the season.
Kevin talked about Lamine yesterday:
“Look at the center-halves we have at the moment, Steven Taylor, (Abdoulaye) Faye and (Claudio) Caçapa and, at a push, (Habib) Beye,â€
“This opportunity came up to take an international, vastly experienced, who has just played in the African Nations Cup, until the end of the season.â€
“If he does really well he could put himself in the shop window for everybody but he also puts in a challenge for us to sign him for next season.â€
“If I lost a center-half to a three-match ban that’s a third of what is left of our season when we have not got much cover, so that’s why I have him here.â€
As far as defenders go we still expect Kevin to bring in Wes Brown on a free transfer in the summer, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens to Lamine.
But it’s completely up to him now – and if he gets in the team and plays well Kevin may sign him for a season or two.
