As most people know the game against Liverpool at Anfield in 1996 was voted the greatest game ever in the Premier league and it ended up with Newcastle losing 4-3 when Stan Collymore scored right at the end of the game and Kevin sunk from his seat in complete disbelief.
Kevin Keegan – better things ahead for Keegan and Newcastle United
What happened in the game is something strange in those days – we got beat.
As everybody knows that’s not too strange right now. It just shows how much Newcastle have descended as a football team – Liverpool of course are still way up there.
But we have to be positive and hope that if and when we avoid relegation this season that better things are on their way for the great Newcastle fans.
Kevin said today:
“I can’t remember what I said to the team back in 96,†“Whatever I said didn’t work so I hope it will not be quite the same. I cannot remember saying let us go out, put on one of the best matches in the world and lose 4-3!â€
“But we would have been ranked as the better team in that league season. We were top and had the momentum with us, we had the confidence victories bring. This time you could say it is slightly roles reversed in that Liverpool are just starting to hit form.â€
“ At Anfield the one thing you have got to do is respect them but not fear them. You must have a belief that you can go there and get a result against the odds.â€
Here’s the video of that great great game.
Yes we know we’re living in the past right now – but it does help us to get through these awful times at the club right now.
But there’s always next season. 😀

Comment #6Just watched these highlights again and the flick with the outside of the right boot from Asprilla was angelic, simply awesome. As was the view from the dugout when Keegan hit behind the boards. Bloody Collymore!
I ache for these days again, raise a glass lads and wish for the best.
See you all at 3pm UK time.
