Keegan Talks About the Legendary Bill Shankly

Kevin Keegan talked today about one of the greatest and most inspirational managers in British Football – Bill Shankly of Liverpool.

Bill Shankly – a great manager and what a personality

Kevin said before the game today at Liverpool:

“I was blessed to work under Shankly,” “Anyone who worked under those kind of people will tell you the same.”

“They were just inspirational, down-to-earth people who made you think, ‘I can achieve everything I want at this football club’. I remember Shankly said, ‘You will play for England’.”

“I had only been there two weeks. I thought, ‘Wow, if he says it, I will’. If he told you you were going to hell you would look forward to the trip.” 😀

“I don’t think Shanks ever had a struggle,” “We were never in the bottom half of the table. We always talked about how we would win things. It’s easier to be positive when you are talking about winning leagues or cups.”

Shankly of course put Liverpool on the map and after he retired, his long time assistant manager Bob Paisley took the Reds to even greater heights, and had the best record as a manager in Liverpool’s history.

Bill Shankly is one of our favorite people and we always have a laugh at some of his quotes.

Here is just a sampling of some of them – what a personality the Scot was.

“When I’ve got nothing better to do, I look down the league table to see how Everton are getting along.”

“A lot of football success is in the mind. You must believe you are the best and then make sure that you are.”

“Me having no education. I had to use my brains.”

“Aim for the sky and you’ll reach the ceiling. Aim for the ceiling and you’ll stay on the floor.”

“This city has two great teams – Liverpool and Liverpool reserves.”

“The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they do not know the game.”

“If you’re not sure what to do with the ball, just pop it in the net and we’ll discuss your options afterwards.”

“If Everton were playing in my front garden I’d close the curtains.”

“Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that.”

The last quote is one of the most famous in football and epotimizes the great man.

Yes it was a privilege to be around when Liverpool were managed by Bill Shankly starting back in the 1960s – he’s one of our all time favorite football managers along with our very own Bobby Robson.

Football wasn’t about all those tactics in those days – it was more about inspiring the players so they went out and and did miraculous things on the football pitch. The game of football is so much more enjoyable when you have managers like that.

Come to think of it Kevin has been inspired by Bill Shankly big time. Good for him.
