FT: Birmingham 1 Newcastle 1 - Magpies Fight Back!

March 17th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 81 Comments

birmingham-city-fc-logo.png nufc-crest.png

This was a game of two halves with Birmingham the better and more decisive team in the first period, and they were good value for their 1-0 interval lead.

But whatever Keegan said to the team at the break certainly had the desired effect as the team came back from the dead in the second period to equalize with a good opportunist goal from Michael Owen.

Michael Owen - captain’s vital goal keeps Newcastle alive

Newcastle came storming back in the second half and not only equalized but will probably count themselves unlucky not to have taken all 3 points, given their fighting and gutsy performance after the beak.

It was nail biting stuff, that’s for sure.

Newcastle looked very tentative in the first half and it was Birmingham. who had the better of the early chances. In fact in the first half Newcastle didn’t really carve out a real chance although Owen fired over from about 30 yards.

Newcastle once again gave away a sloppy goal, as Abdoulaye Faye was far too easily beaten when James McFadden got the ball from the left wing, and easily beat Faye, about 10 yards out, to fire home easily past the helpless Steve Harper.

Harper looked furious that Newcastle had given away yet another poor goal. In the first half McFadden was giving Newcastle, and Faye in particular, a torrid time and he looked a match winner in the first 45 minutes. McFadden is a very improved player this season.

In the first half Newcastle were playing some nice football but still looked as fragile as they looked against Liverpool. And they continue to make a habit of giving away sloppy goals.

Given that our team has scored just 4 goals in 9 games under Kevin Keegan (Owen has 3 of those), it’s hard for our team to win if we concede just one goal.

Newcastle trudged off at half time, and things were not looking good, to say the least.

But Newcastle came back from the dead and played with some spirit in the second half.  What was also noticeable was that they looked very fit, as they piled the pressure on Birmingham.  Against Fulham we must keep a clean sheet through the first 45 minutes and then maybe we can push for a good win.

In the 56th minute Oba Martins and Michael Owen were working well together inside the penalty box and the ball ran loose to Oba, who put in a beautiful low drive on the turn that Taylor parried to his right. Michael Owen was in like a shot to put the ball in the back of the net. In the process Michael beat two Birmingham defenders to the ball.

If anybody doubts Owen’s speed off the mark look ate this replay where he gives 2 years on the Birmingham defenders and still pokes the ball in the net.

After 81 minutes Keegan made a strange substitution bringing on N’Zogbia for …. Oba Martins. That was a little weird since Oba looked Newcastle’s most dangerous player in the second. Why not take off Viduka, who was making his first appearance for several weeks?

Oba to us is looking to be the odd man out at Newcastle, and we shouldn’t surprised if he sees th writing on the wall and leaves Newcastle in the summer. He was not happy at being brought off and we don’t blame him one little bit, because he probably thought he could get the winner for Newcastle tonight.

But make no mistake about it, this was a crucial point for Newcastle, and to their credit in the second half showed fight, spirit and skill and this match should provide them with confidence for the visit of Fulham on Saturday.

We must say that a defeat tonight would have wrecked the team, not to mention the supporters. This is a game in which we dodged a bullet. A defeat would have put Birmingham ahead of us in the league, but we now remain above them and are now 4 points from the the drop zone.

Comments welcome.

Ed, 110 yards out, he he what a goal that’d be :)

  • 2 Mson // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:21

Well match died after we had them in their keepers knees when martis was subed :((. Should have taken all points today…

    harper - 6
    enrique - 7
    taylor - 4
    faye - 5
    beye - 6
    barton - 4
    butt - 4
    geremi - 5
    martins - 8
    owen - 6
    viduka - 5

  • 3 Jack // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:21

I think 2 wins will be enough to stay up. Hopefully against Fulham and Reading.

  • 4 Howie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:21

owen is still a class act. that 3 prolonged attack was ok. martins displayed something which i was worried he didnt have. a footballing brain. he was quality. midfield not great but geremi vastly improved and butt and barton fought hard. enrique was good tonight aswell. overall a lot more positives than negatives imo.

  • 5 Howie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:22

ed macfaddens good but not that good

  • 6 ScottyT // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:24

agree with that first half we were dire awful pathetic and we didnt look like scoring but second half was like a different team as i said on my earlier posts shame we couldnt have nicked it.

faye had a very poor first half imo kept getting skinned by mcfadden way too easily and yh he was clearly at fault for the goal. jose was poor 1st half as well but livened up 2nd half. also agree bout owen he was behind 3 or 4 b’ham players nd still got there before them.

wouldnt have taken martins off mind he looked lively second half. barton geremi and butt no creativity there though butt played decent. barton shite as usual and geremi wernt great specially with crosses.

all in all a decent point i spose but just makes the fulham game on satday even more important. (btw anyone know why duff wasnt in the squad)

    Howay!!

  • 7 IanG // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:24

Great to watch in the second - Martins was great in the 2nd half and clearly unhappy at being subbed but a good second half performance and high work rate from the team. Felt Barton was a yard too slow though and Geremi’s corners and general supply was poor but I think if we can play like that for the full 90 we should be home and dry.

  • 8 Howie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:25

mson i think your being harsh there. harper 7, beye 8, taylor 6. faye 5, enrique 8, butt 7, barton 6, geremi 6 ( would have given a 7 but for poor crosses), martins 8, owen 7, viduka 6.

  • 9 ObaFan2 // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:25

mson, though Taylor had one of his better games and Faye one of his worst.

Barton terrible, Butt a little better.

Geremi bad and Duke off the pace and his touch bad but still held onto the ball occasionally.

Martins always a danger and Owen two great chances and scored one.

Beye MOTM imo and Enrique getting better all the time.

  • 10 Simon P // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:26

Faye, Barton and Geremi were shockingly poor.
    Why was Martins subbed…?

We were rubbish and I am very very worried…

  • 11 richie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:26

prob should have won, good man owen on the goal, doesn suprise me one bit, he;s a proven goalscorer

martins very good,id go 4 3 3 at home and go at fulham from the start as if our lives depended on it ,,

  • 12 marcus owen // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:28

Why sub Martin instead of Viduka or Barton? I thought Martin is the most effective player on the field. We should have all 3 points tonight.

  • 13 ToonKing // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:29

The team was decent tonight, so was the gameplay. Nothing to spot there.
Owen was impressive, i don’t care what anybody says about him, you can see that he cares about us and fought for everything today.
Martins was also a positive, he played good.
Even Geremi and Butt pleased me today.

On the downside, Barton was tits, Faye had an unusually shaky game, Taylor was clowning again.
But the biggest let down for me today was KK. Subbing Oba was and inadmissive act in my eyes. I didn’t want him, but was happy when he came, but with every game he’s just loosing the plot more and more. Today the players got the draw.
I really hope he can get his act together.

  • 14 JJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:30

    Common Mson, Harper was fantastic!

    Harper - 8
    Enrique - 8
    Taylor - 6
    Faye - 5
    Barton -5
    Butt - 6
Geremi - 6 (only cos his corners were crap)
    Owen - 7.5
    Martin - 8.5
    Viduka - 6

  • 15 JJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:30

    left out Beye - 7

  • 16 Eamonn // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:31

Enrique’s best game for us? Great to see him getting forward , wouldn’t have been doing that under Sam!

  • 17 ObaFan2 // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:31

I’m as disappointed as anyone having Oba subbed but it didn’t cost us 3 points, maybe look at it that it saved us the one point!!!!!!

10 minutes to go and a fresh pair of legs but Birmingham pushed us right to the final whistle.

Would have loved all 3 points but happy with a draw and a point so stop whining :D .

  • 18 piman // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:32

richie - our lives do depend on it!

    come on saturday…

  • 19 ToonRich // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:33

I would have taken a 1-1 result before the game, but seeing a different performance from the lads in the 2nd half I was a little disappointed we didnt manage to nick a 2nd goal - Duke showed why he should play, held the ball well when he did get it to feet, but pretty slow to make a pass. I’d have liked to have seen charlie on earlier, i think we’d have killed them off putting him on earlier for Barton and kept Martins on.

Yeah ok MO missed a very good chance, but least he was there to put in his goal! He and Oba seemed to gel well when attacking at pace together.
I agree with Howie on the player ratings :)

  • 20 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:34

the difference between barton, geremi and the rest of the team is that those two had their f****n ipods switched on at half time, both were poor throughout. Enrique was class second half and he really showed what he is worth.

  • 21 Ile // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:39

I think Barton’s display was terrible and I was bit amazed that he wasn’t replaced by N’Zogbia. Also Viduka was poor.

  • 22 Darryl // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:39

Worst players on the pitch were Faye, barton and viduka. Barton.. what the hell is he doing? I think hes playing in the black and white stripes.. to see how he looks before he goes to jail.

  • 23 ToonKing // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:40

Saturday 22nd of March 2008, Fulham home, Judgment Day

  • 24 Ausgeordie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:43

Geremi looked crap in the first half but got going eventually Owen should have gone off with Martins staying on and Zogbia providing the crosses. Faye is not as good as everyone is saying.

  • 25 James // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:46

McLeish just gave an interview to say the difference between the two sides was Owen. He said his defenders told him after the game they couldn’t pick him up cause one minute he was behind them, the next going deep. He described him as a handful.

I must say in the second half Owen led by example. He really got the team going. A terrific captain’s display and excellent goal (beating 5 defenders to the ball even though he started his run behind all of them).

Man of the match was without question Enrique who was simply immense. One of the best displays by any player all season.

    Bring on Fulham!

  • 26 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:47

Owen did very well, if you disagree you are wrong. Viduka should have come off because he can’t last an entire game and I think Carroll could have gotten a goal or at least made one.

  • 27 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:50

Faye is good, he has jus been off of it lately, on his day he is immense

  • 28 Bobby Ollox // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:51

The first half was just awful, but as people keep saying, it is all about confidence, and they have none.

Now see what happened when we got our tails up after scoring - the pace stepped up a gear, there were more completed passes , players moving into space, more fighting for the ball.

Now if we had scored in that 15 minutes after equalising, we would have gone on to walk the match, and I think it would have spilled over into the rest of the season. As it is, the confidence will have taken a knock again.

It was still awful, nowhere near good enough…

  • 29 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:51

    agree 100% James

  • 30 Darryl // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:52

Yeah agree, Carroll should have been given 10minutes. The few minutes he was on against manu, showed what a great touch he has. Viduka just seemed to have the touch of a brick wall for most of the game, nothing was going for him.

  • 31 m. // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:52

great to see that KK discovered that Smith can’t trap a bag of sand.

  • 32 thelongshanks // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:52

I didnt think id admit it but butt was very good 2nite,shows alot about smith haha.If he gets back into the team i will cry.Martins was class but understand him taking of a striker. It was between owen and martins cuz viduka was holding the ball to run down the clock.A point is a good result away from home and birmingham were playin well last few games.3 points at fulham or else this draw is wasted.

  • 34 richie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:59

butt was outstanding, and to a lessor extent i think barton and enrique played well

i think confidence is an issue,,,players looked like diff. players 2nd half

  • 35 Yeomsta // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:59

    Good result, bring on Fulham!

But on a side note; Martin’s deserves better, I like him as a player and for the sake of his career he needs to put in a transfer request and go somewhere he will be appreciated. I’m genuinley p*ssed off at the way he’s been treated by BSA and KK this season.

  • 36 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:01

the way the media are talking about todays result is really disappointing. Even though birmingham are below us and closer to relegation they still say stuff like “Newcastle claimed a vital point in their desperate struggle to avoid relegation”…no mention of birmingham . I really do not know why people down here want The Toon to fail

  • 37 James // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:02

Above all other things, let’s remember this day as the one that KK FINALLY DROPPED SMITH! Never thought it would happen, and we looked so better for it.

Bringing off Martins was the right thing to do because one of the defenders was trying to hack him constantly and I feared an injury coming on. He was also drifting inside when he needed to hold onto the ball. Charlie was the right option.

And there was no way you could take Owen off. He was the reason we got back into the game, and the reason we nearly won it. A very Shearer like performance from him. Same again on Sat and his goals will send Fulham packing

  • 38 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:06

Can some one please check out the setanta ratings and stats and explain to me how the stats show we were the better team overall, yet birmingham players have the better ratings? How does that make sense?!

    http://sport.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Football/2008/03/17/Prem-Brum-v-Toon-StatsRatings/

  • 39 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:07

Bolton have the most HORRIFIC fixtures left and they will go down. Fulham are the only risk now, we beat them this saturday and i think they are done for, COME ON LADS!

  • 40 CRAIGG // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:12

KK left owen on because he was looking dangerous and is our safe bet for a goal and Viduka was left on to keep the ball if the side were under pressure.

Barton was kept on to make a 442 with geremi and zog on the wings, as brum had us on the back foot at the time and we were too open.

You say KK doesnt know tactics well i thought that was good tactics take the 1 point and not risk going with nothing like we did against blackburn by pushing on too much.

It was a good point, one i would have taken prior to kick off and some of the players Butt included played very well, Same again against fulham and we will win and against Reading and sunderland and we stay up simple really…

Dragoner go back to your normal name, you sound like a camp, purple, little ponce.

And some of the ratings are bizarre:

    Harper 7
    Beye 7
    Taylor 6
    Faye 5
    Enrique 7
    Geremi 6
    Butt 7
    Barton 3
    Martins 7
    Owen 7
    Viduka 4

  • 41 richie // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:13

dragoner wat did u think of geremi tonight?i thought he brought something to the midfield..he should start against fulham

  • 42 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:13

riche - You can’t seriously think Barton played well. Honestly, you have to be taking the piss.

  • 43 Cheeses // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:13

Guys, agreed it was a shame Martins was taken off, but the way I saw it Kev was actually quite clever. Oba was drifting more and more forwards (and off to the right wing), and KK seemed to think reverting to a mid 4 would help. Zoggy certainly knows how to hold a left wing position. Granted Viduka could have been replaced, but he was producing some great hold-up play on occasion and a full match will do wonders for his fitness.

So long as Martins has a big part in our remaining matches, I’m happy with the change - it meant we didn’t do another blackburn.

    An unreserved apology to:

    Nicky Butt

Tonight you used all of the abilities you have learned over the years for the first time this season. Though I had predicted your foul on Larrsen the minute he pushed you over, you played like the footballer you were at Man Utd for all those years. For the time being, I will stop referring to you as Licky Butt and hope you retain the composure and skill you showed tonight. Good work, well done.

    To Joey Barton

As with Nicky Butt, tonight you looked like a player who desperately wanted to win the match. Stop getting pissed and having scraps and be what you were on the pitch tonight. Determined.

    To Kevin Keegan

I will remain sceptical about your ability to take my team forward until you have proven yourself with silverware, however, whatever you said at half time made a the difference between a 2-0 loss and a 1-1 draw. Your man management skills may have just started to work. Well done.

    A final comment:

The second half of this evening’s match was like watching Newcastle United play as a team for the first match in a long time. You were brilliant, but please don’t get carried away. You forced a draw with Birmingham City, you did not beat Man Utd 5-0.

With the points required to ensure that you are a premier league team next season, you will need to double the efforts you put in in that second half.

I don’t think that Alan Smith is a shit striker, and his level of work is unquestionable. Tonight, however, he sat the game out and things changed. Maybe he will have a brighter day in black and white when he finds his form, maybe he won’t. Keegan’s decision not to use him may have earned Newcastle a point tonight, maybe it cost us two. Who knows?

The decision was made and at long last we scored and we didn’t lose.

I hope that decisions come from the head in future, instead of from the heart, as there is a notable consequence of doing so. Let’s see Oba, clearly our most gifted striker, up there at the start of every game.

In the biggest fight I have seen my club enter in my time as a supporter, I am going to need to see guts and determination to prove that you are still worthy of my support, though you will always have it if you wear the strip.

Consider only this: When you have been sold to another club, like so much cattle, or have retired in black and white, you will no longer be a part of Newcastle United. I will still be a supporter. Earn your place in the memories of all of us who will be there long after you are.

Thank you and goodnight. Davies (after lots of booze - sorry!)

  • 46 daiv // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:17

    Great result.
B rum away is very difficult and we showed durability.
No Smith was a big positive.
Barton must go against Fulham and Nzog brought in. Barton is going to jail in any case. We will and must beat Fulham. Fulham is much bigger than Brum. Brum result was important in terms of confidence.

  • 47 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:18

Blackburn would have been alright it Enrique had just dived into Derbyshire. Yes he would have gotten sent off but it would have gotten us a point. He was selfish there.

  • 48 richie // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:18

he showed alot of fight and got on the ball,,im looking for positives to take..and as iv said before i think midfield is our biggest problem baron butt and geremi should satrt against fulham

also smith can stay on the bench for rest of season

i thought barton did ok and i also thought butt had a ok game although his passing was awful as usual .

  • 56 Tom_Toon // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:25

  • 58 islander // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:26

At last KK picked up a team, that could be a winning team. Hope he stays to this team and lets them work together in the next matches and at practic. Maybe he should use N´Zogbia instead of Barton. In 2 half they worked well together as a team
    - better than I have seen for a long time. Don’t subs Martins !!

  • 59 CRAIGG // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:28

Vidukas hold up play is vital in these sort of away matches when like the first half when we were under the cosh which is why martins was subbed and viduka stayed on

But he is so much better than that and if he starts against fulham he will score.

  • 60 Gordon d // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:28

Depending on results this weekend a win against fulham should be enough to keep us up .I am pretty sure KEEGAN (7) will get the result we need . Personally i’m 100% behind Keegan to do a good job given time he will get his own team and hopefully jump up the league into a European place.TOON TILL I DIE.

  • 61 Steve Mills // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:31

I thought we did ok, Showed good fight. and could have nicked it.
We were dreadful in the 1st half, both centre backs were shocking. Midfield couldn’t keep possesion, Barton looked rusty, no creatviity and the front three looked all over the place. We were lucky at 1-0. Another dreadful mistake for the goal. But 2nd half we showed some fight, midfield three won the ball and owen dropped deeper. All of a sudden they were all over the place and we deservedly equalised. After that only 1 team looked like winning it. I thought bringing zog on was a good move, it meant we didn’t concede, unlike blackburn and took a point away from home. I’m pleased martins was pissed off, show some fight. If we carry on battling like that we’ll stay up.

    Positves

Good play from both fullbacks. enrique gets better and beye is no nonsense right back.
Barton, Butt and geremi had good 2nd halves ( although set plays were dreadful)
Martins, owen and viduka looked like they could actually play together.
The players showed some fight and came back to rescue a point.

    Negatives
    Still no win
    bad defending again
    Clueless 1st half

  • 62 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:35

  • 66 Toooooooooooooooooon // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:45

    BAD:
    -the whole first half
    -geremi’s corner
-we can win the match if we work a bit harder
-still concede like usual, steven taylor look like the one who will make mistakes

    GOOD:
    -the whole second half
-Owen get the ball more often, its like he is playing as and AMC
-Martin definitely the key to our relegation battle this yr.
-Butt,Barton i see some improvement and get the ball more…

OVERALL i m glad we get a point but its sad that we CAN win - well we can win all the matches we ended up as a DRAW

    rafinha vanden borre kompany marcelo
    nasri biglia gago taraabt
    aguerro vela

    subs: Bentley, Lennon, Pato, Taylor,Kameni

what a great young first 11 that would be:

french wingers, mexican strikers, argentinian central midfielders, centre backs from belgium and brazilian fullbacks and a russian keeper.

  • 68 Spyro // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:49

yes i know it will never happen

  • 69 James // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:50

Carrick will cost £18 million, and KK will pay it. He’s supposed to be very high on the shopping list.

Drags, ive got to burn your team. Vela is much better on the wing IMO. Vanden Borre is a liability at RB and him at CB?!?! Madness ;)
Gago and Marcelo are good but no way would they be in a squad of mine.

  • 71 CJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:54

Aguerro is from Argentina and what is so good about Cbs from Belgium, Belgium are shit shitter than England.

  • 72 Spyro // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:58

oh shit das right, he is argentinian, to tom toon, all i say is, they are young and if i were manager i would make them all adapt to where i put them ;)

by the way borre is like beye and can play cb aswell

  • 73 Spyro // Mar 18, 2008 at 0:00

CJ i just meant cb’s from belgium to stress that they are from the same country and would have a good understanding with each other, less confusion

  • 74 CRAIGG // Mar 18, 2008 at 0:03

GP I think that carrick would cost about 15million.

    KK has 50m to spend.

If we get about 15million from sales :

    4 for smith from mackems

    1m from boro for shola

    3 for Roz from Lazio

    pompey want Viduka for 1m

N’Zogbia if he wants to go still then we could get about 8-9m for him.

get rid of the other losers for nowt if we cant get anything.

    Bring in :

    Carrick
    Cahill (if Bolton go down)
    McFadden (If brum Go down)
    Bridge
    Ashton
    SWP
    Mexes (never going to happen)

would be a great side with loads of creativity and goals from all areas.

    Beye-Cahill-Mexes-Bridge
    SWP-Carrick-Emre-McFadden
    ——Owen—Ashton———

My wet dream tonight anyway, watching that side run out at SJP next season with local hero booming out and KK, Aurthur, Steve Round and Chris Hughton joined by Shearer and Beardsley on the bench and Pavel the ECO warrier as a goalkeeping coach.

I have just said Belgian cbs are shite but Phillipe Phillipe Albert is Belgian wouldn’t mind a similiar type player to him.

  • 76 Tom_Toon // Mar 18, 2008 at 0:15

Kompany is the closest player you’ll get to Albert.

well done lads, for tonight im sure you will sleep tonight with the knowlegde that you didnt give up

  • 79 Whitt // Mar 18, 2008 at 4:23

anyone remember that time Barton won every tackle in midfield? Oh yeah, that was the 2nd half tonight.

    SWP is OVERRATED.

  • 80 hanzemre // Mar 18, 2008 at 6:45

Though Faye was bad in the 1st half on 2 or 3 occasions especially with his passings around to his mates, Taylor was poor too with his positional sense & clearance headers just that it was somehow luckily unpunished. KK must gave them some good words (or tactics?) in the dressing room but he shouldn’t sub Martins, Carroll should went in for Viduka after 60 mins. N’Zogbia for Barton as well. Even Lua Lua/Smith for Geremi after 70 mins. BTW it was better than nothing with better luck & confidence we’ll start collecting points soon.

  • 81 Hamabi // Mar 18, 2008 at 21:00

Watched the highlights. For probably the first time in a long time, Newcastle played as a team and not 11 overpaid individuals running around like headless chickens. Or is it just the Alan-Smith-factor - or, rather, the no-Alan-Smith-factor?
