Former Luton manager Lil Fucillo has been announced as Newcastle United’s new Chief Scout.

The reports of this appointment came form the Luton area yesterday, and we will have to wait until the appointment is announced officially by Newcastle United, maybe today.
One point that immediately comes to mind, is that he’s another guy from the South. However, that’s not too surprising since we assume these appointments are being made by Dennis Wise, and they will be part of his overall scouting network, which is being put in place rapidly by the club.
This is an important appointment for the club, because as we know there is a renewed and committed effort to scout the world for great talent to bring to the Tyneside club. We are essentially aligning that strategy with what Arsenal have been doing over the last 10 years under Arsene Wenger.
That’s not too bad a model to follow however, and it’s an important part of Newcastle’s future blueprint for sustained success.
Lil had a decent playing career and he has been Manager, Assistant Manager, coach and scout at various clubs, so he seems to have a good overall background and resume for the job. Of course the great skill of a scout is to be able spot great talent early, and that’s not always easy.
Fucillo spent most of his playing career at Luton Town and played a total of 180 times between 174-1982. Lil scored 27 goals during that time and played in midfield. He has also been associated with Peterborough a number of times in various positions.
Here is a short biography of Lil that we have gathered together:
Fuccillo was born in Bedford to Italian parents and joined Luton Town straight from school. Fucillo also played at Southend, Peterborough and the Tulsa Roughnecks.
Fuccillo rejoined Peterborough in 1991 as assistant manager to Chris Turner, and had an unsuccessful spell as manager when Turner became chairman. Lil then joined Barry Fry at Birmingham City as a coach, and then moved back to London Road to be his assistant. His third spell at Peterborough didn’t last too long either, Fry sacked both Fuccillo and coach Mick Halsall in December 1996 as an economy measure.
Fuccillo had spells as a scout for Sheffield Wed. and as John Still’s right-hand man at Barnet Town.
In November 2000 he returned to Luton Town as a scout and was immediately promoted to assistant manager, and then with Luton in bottom place Fuccillo became the manager as Ricky Hill was sacked.
In 2002 Fuccillo linked up with Peterborough for a fourth time as scout, but he moved shortly after that to Premiership side Everton, also as a scout.
Fuccilli began the 2006/07 season as a coach at Ryman League side Arlesey Town, and then in November 2006 joined Leicester City as chief scout.

Who decided his qualifications should qualify him as our chief scout???? Where is his track record? As far as I can see he does not have one, I hope this is not a case of jobs for the boys.

Luton have found a few decent young players over recent years haven’t they? I say this without the slightest idea of who they are mind, so perhaps not that good!
When it comes to scouts, my feeling is that we should just get as many as we possibly can - so we can have them in all parts of the world, trying to spot good young players for the Toon.

have to say this appointment leaves me baffled, hope Wise knows what he is doing, I mean its not the greatest of resume`s is it.
Seems to me a part time network of scouts located in their home countries and reporting to the full time scouts, who in turn could watch and evaluate any reported talent. I mean how does Weger learn about young players from every continent? would`nt be a bad system to emulate

Lil fucillo has a decent pedigree, ok he’s never managed in premier league but he’s a top scout.
incidently he was manager of peterborough in div one early 90s and had a big row with Keegan over the fitness of loan signing David Roche, I recall Keegan recalled him when fuccillo said he was over weight and kev demanded an apology that was never forthcoming.

i know lil personally he was responsible for benni carbonie and polio di canio at sheffeild wednesday which help them to finish mid table on their first season he is a great scout and has links with some very good clubs in italy which is good as he gets the players young.
