Keegan – Capacity Newcastle Crowd Stood By Us

6:41 pm, Saturday, March 22nd, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 19 Comments

It finally came after 10 games in charge. We’ll not say it was worth waiting for, but the lads played very well this afternoon and fully deserved this important victory.

Mark Viduka being molested – after scoring great first goal

Keegan told Sky Sports:

“It was a great result and it might stop people saying Newcastle have not won under Kevin Keegan,” “The pleasing thing was the way the players stuck together and it was a really good team performance.”

“We showed good character, got the goal early on and possibly should have scored two or three more. When we had to dig in the players stuck together and that was one of the things the players have been criticized about in the past.”

“I felt there was a good spirit around the place and we just needed a win to endorse that.” “It was thoroughly deserved and I don’t think anybody at Fulham could say any different.”

“We deserved to win this game and we played some really good football in the telling areas.” .”The crowd today (a sellout) really stood by us, they were fantastic as they nearly always are,”

“These players are lucky that in such a season it would have been so easy to go the other way as a big club like ourselves shouldn’t be fighting relegation.”

“I think the players now realize what it takes to get out of the bottom and they have been led by Michael Owen, who has been absolutely superb not just for his goals, but also his leadership on the field.”

“He has worked, foraged, played in a couple of different positions against different teams, but he has never questioned anything – he is a great team player.”

We have to agree with those comments on Owen, since he seems to have come of age at the club.

Certainly since Kevin came you cannot question Michael’s work rate at all. He’s worked his socks off for the club and of course has started to score the goals again. :D

Overall a great performance an an excellent win. It’s hard in a game like this to pick out individuals, because our strength was our team work and team spirit. And again the class is starting to show through again.

But we cannot relax until we are free of the relegation threat. We must keep collecting points, starting at Spurs next weekend.

Comments welcome.

i didnt see the game today as i didnt manage to get a link for it as i never do but how did martins owen and viduka combine together and did geremi have a good game

  • 2 ronaldeano // Mar 22, 2008 at 6:45 PM

Owen was fantastic today, he was a pleasure to watch.

More of the same next week please!

  • 3 ronaldeano // Mar 22, 2008 at 6:50 PM

@Scott9, Geremi was poor today mate, he fell over and kicked the ball like a girl right at the end and made himself look stupid. His crosses were ok tho and his free kick that set up owens goal was good, but he looked lazy at times.

I cant fault the rest of the lads tho cos they worked hard and deserved the win by far :)

Scott 9 – Owen was by far the best player on the pitch. He was immense. There was a spell in the first half where Fulham were getting on top of our midfield and Owen kept coming back and taking the ball off them to start our attacks again. He was Captain Fantastic today.

Martins did better than Birmingham where he drifted in a lot when he should have stayed in position. Today he worked hard for the team without really being a threat. Although he did have one tremendous shot on goal. When he came off, Owen ran over to thank him for his effort which was a great thing to see. He even shook Keegan’s hand coming off and took it all well.

But there is no question that Owen ran the show today.

On March 17, 2008 it is reported that Newcastle United will bid £9million for the striker

  • 6 joel // Mar 22, 2008 at 6:59 PM

what ever happened to that report on Gomis?

  • 7 Dragoner // Mar 22, 2008 at 7:03 PM

Scott 9 Geremi wasn’t half as bad as people will have you believe, his set pieces were poor but he was good everywhere else, he defended well and didnt make too many panic passes from what i saw, some people are just against him, or they base his whole performance on his set pieces, idiotic i know

won more win people and we should be safe, nice to see owen and the vid hit the net

I was really happy with how Butt and Barton played today, they ran the midfield. I thought the performance was great, albeit against a hapless Fulham, the only problem i had was how narrow the team played. At least until Zog came on, who looked lively and linked up pretty well with Enrique, who had another cracking game, his futures really starting to look up.

    Howay the lads!

ronaldeano??? GEREMI worked hard and won some important balls, as BARTON and again BUTT did too! So please be realistic and don’t write nonsense! he also served OWEN for the winner!

It was a good (not a fantastic game) as KK said and he’s so right! But it will need more to get something against in form spurs next sunday! Only plus point is, that the fellow struglers also have hard matches. But for the moment I’m happy with the performance and the win of course!

Great performances all over the pitch today – but especially Michael Owen, he worked his socks off. Even Barton had a good game, which is just as well as we needed a box to box runner with only 3 in midfield. Great goal by Viduka. Geremi will never have pace but used his experience well. I’ve got no voice left so I’m going to have a few drinkie poos – Woooohooooo!!! I’ll put summat on the You Tube Channel tomorrow but tonight is for celebration :o) Bye

  • 12 ScottyT // Mar 22, 2008 at 7:21 PM

dragoner sorry but got to disagree geremi was absolutely terrible today so slow hardly helped beye wen going forward either

3 upfront again worked well and for the first time i actually have to admit that thuggy barton pld well thought he had a good game surprisingly. faye and enrique were also very good today imo

also one thing i noticed today was that we are really relcutant to have shots apart from oba. owen and barton had such great chances to shoot just outside the box but opted to pass instead wasting the chance. very frustrating

finally yes it is great we won eventually but we werent as great as people have been saying. the reality is fulham were awful apart from bullard (one who we should sign if they go down)

  • 13 Ed the Duck // Mar 22, 2008 at 7:22 PM

I would agree re Owen… he linked Midfield and attack superbly, didn’t rue his missed (sitter?) header from the first half and played some lovely balls don the channels… to be honest everyone was at least good/solid and yes… it was only Fulham… but I feel the confidence will rise now and we will see a different Toon from now on.

  • 14 ronaldeano // Mar 22, 2008 at 7:22 PM

@Elfer, my Gran has more pace than Geremi!

The ball he served up to Owen for the goal was the only thing he done, apart from a few easy tackels my 2 yr old could have made.

  • 15 Dragoner // Mar 22, 2008 at 7:28 PM

well scottyt at least u came up with a valid reason, unlike some idiotic fools on here who just talk crap, and sound like little kids e.g. ronaldickhead

  • 16 ScottyT // Mar 22, 2008 at 7:32 PM

fair enough dragoner we all have our opinions..

on a side note just read this..

Speaking of Europe, there is a new face on the scouting scene in Spain.

For Rafael Benitez has appointed his compatriot and former United central defender Marcelino as Liverpool’s Spanish scout.

    Lool!

i am soo happy, when watching the game today i sat there thinking that i never expected fulham to score during it. before the match i thought bullard would get a goal but during the match zippo

I think using a word like “nonsense” to Ronaldeano is a bit inflammatory in the cirucmstances. He might just blow again.
