Newcastle Relegation Watch – Things Looking Up

It was a very good day for all North East teams as Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough all won.

mark-viduka-981.gif

Mark Viduka – great goal by Viduka after just 8 minutes – class

Michael Chopra, from Newcastle, scored Sunderland’s winner at Villa Park after 83 minutes, a massive win for Sunderland.

So it may be that the North East will still have 3 teams in the Premier league next season.

Micddlesbrough beat Derby County at home 1-0 and of course Newcastle had an excellent home win 2-0 against Fulham, a game in which the Magpies were easily the better side. We scored two very good goals through Viduka and Owen (again), but we could have 2-3 more in the first half especially.

Bolton did well to draw 0-0 at the Reebok against Manchester City, but still lost ground to teams around them.  Reading had their 3rd win in 4 games when they beat Birmingham 2-1 at the Madejski stadium.

Wigan are again back in the mix as they were beaten at Blackburn 3-1.

Here’s the table after today’s results, and with just 7 games to go.

Pos Team Games Won Draw Lost GF GA GD Points Result

12 Middlesbrough 31 8 10 13 28 44 -16 34 win
13 Newcastle 31 8 8 15 33 57 -24 32 win
14 Wigan 31 8 7 16 28 45 -17 31 loss
15 Reading 31 9 4 18 37 58 -21 31 win
16 Sunderland 31 8 6 17 27 48 -21 30 win
17 Birmingham 31 6 9 15 35 48 -13 27 loss
18 Bolton 31 6 8 17 29 44 -17 26 draw
19 Fulham 31 4 11 16 27 51 -24 23 loss
20 Derby 31 1 7 23 14 65 -51 10 loss

We are now 6 points off the drop zone, and at least we improved our goal difference to -24, and went 9 points clear of Fulham, and we almost have the same goal difference now.

And of course this is our first win in 14 games in the league – what’s the chances we can win again at White Hart Lane next weekend. It will be an exciting match because Spurs play very attacking football, under new manager Juande Ramos.

Great win for Newcastle…what a feeling to enjoy Saturday again!

Reading are really pulling themselves out of it, aren’t they? A few weeks ago, I had them being relegated but they’ve strung together a few results. No idea what the remainder of their run-in looks like though.

Yet again, Owen led the team fantastically well. Constantly went over to players to encourage them and played really well as a link player to keep the attacks going. Well deserved his goal in the end, and he is dragging us away from the relegation.

I think the 3 teams in the relegation zone at the moment will go down, its too late for Fulham to get safe – I cant see them making 4-5 points on Birmingham and doubt they’ll reach 30. Bolton just cant score and if you dont score you wont win games.

Agree James, Owen was massive for us today again, and i don’t care what anyone says he is crucial to the Toon’s rise.

We must keep him at the club in the summer, we must.

After all the hype (myself included) isnt in strange that the MOM goes to BARTON!

Cannot understand the subs, what is going on in the Managers head? Robson, Roader, Allerdyce now Keegan……you dont take off your match winners unless they are injured……

Great performance, great result, toon toon black and white army………

Owen is really proving his worth to us, leads the line well imo. Here’s to hoping we can get a point against Spurs, not holding my breath though. I just hope we don’t get hammered if we do lose.

I’m with you Callum – the bottom 3 at the minute will be there come May.

A massive win for us today and it was good to see Barton have a decent game.

The Stella’s out already – its gonna be a long night!

Who gave Barton MOTM? SkySports ratings give it to Owen — and the fan ratings on bbc online give it to Viduka (with Owen in 2nd). I’ve not seen an official declaration. Barton was much improved, admittedly, but I wouldn’t say he was more essential than any other player.

Would be a tough call, MOTM. Owen just edges it for me — great leadership, good link play, and the goal to put the match to bed.

barton had a stormer, to be fair to the guy.

as much as i dislike him, this was far and away his best game in a black and white shirt.

the difference? he could actually pass the ball for a change.

Owen looked great as a playmaker behind Duke and Martins. Owen and Barton share the MOTM imho.

delighted! well done joey barton, i stated on a previous post that he should start again today and he did wat he should have started doing a while ago! hopefully he can kick on! michael owen played a different role and i thought he was a massive player agin for us, i feel he deserves a bit more credit then he gets sometimes. oh and btw this will probs annoy alot of ppl since so many took part, but what is the boo’n about when oba got brought off?? he didnt have the best of games, bringing zog on gives us a bit of securtity in a game we couldnt throw away like we did at blackburn! hes a decent player but never warranted that today! but anyway all about the result today! haway the lads!

Owen has 4 goals in the last 7 games if I’m not mistaken and that is exactly what we need from him. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!

4 goals in 7 games is good, i thought he had scored less until yesterday.

KK has found Owen to be a very worthy captain, when a lot of people (including myself) doubted he was captain material. I am very interested to see how he handles captaincy for the rest of the season.

Dont want to be picky on such a happy occasion but im annoyed at some of the comments about KK taking off Oba on some of the previous pages for example F*****G idiot.

He was justified against Brum for keeping it tight and holding on to the point.

And he was proved spot on because he left Owen on and he did what he does.

I just wish some of you would reserve judgement, because you look stupid and you cant retract your statements.

Sod the spurs match any thing more than a defeat is a bonus, The Reading match is the big one if we win that we stay up.

Again no one expects us to get much off portsmouth, west ham, chelsea and everton so we know who we must beat the same as usual the inbred brigade down the road.

Well done KK and the lads. 2 goals and a win. Feels great doesn’t it. I’m buzzing but lets not forget we beat a poor team today so don’t get too disappointed next week when it’s gonna be a lot different. I’m hearing how good our players are and how Stevie Taylor is a living legend. Calm down lads. I know it’s good to win but lets keep a level head because if thing’s don’t go too well next week we don’t want anyone being disappointed and not being behind the team 110%. And stop moaning about the substitutions. If KK wants to take oba off fair enough. He’s the gaffer. We all trust him, right?. Well most of us anyway.
It’s still gonna be tough but we’ll be ok.
Keep the faith. Keep the roar. And most of all keep the boos to yourself during the most important period for our club in a long time.

KK has added a whole new dimension to Owens game, he will no longer be the poacher, but now a poacher and a link up player, if that is the case then i wouldnt mind him staying on at The Toon. His Leaderships qualities are quite impressive from what i have seen.

I’d like to see the same formation with Milner or Duff instead of Geremi next week. Butt is playing well and his earned his spot. Smith can be used to replace him if need be. Carroll for Viduka late in the game would have been nice but it was great to see Edgar get on the pitch.

Great game and worth getting up at 1.55am for.

Only bad news was that Sunderland won, but it shouldn’t matter too much now. We need really just 6 more points for safety, 8 to be certain. Fulham are done, they had to beat us to stay with a chance. You can’t see Bolton getting up to 35 points now, so just a couple more wins to seal safety for us I hope.
