Lamine Diatta still seems to be a couple of Reserve team games away from full match fitness, but Lamine is getting closer to forcing his way into the first-team at Newcastle United.
Lamine Diatta – couple of games away form full match fitness
The Senegal captain was not included in the squad for the Fulham game yesterday, because Keegan thinks he is still short of match fitness.
Diatta last played in the African Cup Of Nations almost two months ago. However, Keegan does not believe the Dakar-born player– is far away from his match day squad.
Keegan talked to the Shield’s Gazette about Diatta yesterday:
“He’s got something to contribute, otherwise I wouldn’t have signed him.†“He’s not in the squad for Fulham. I just felt he needed a couple more reserve games.â€
“He trains very professionally, and we’re just working on his match fitness now. I thought he played very well on Tuesday, and he’ll get a run out for the reserves next week.â€
“It’s just his match fitness that needs working on, as he’s not played a game for some weeks now.”
With Peter Ramage now back from injury and Faye being preferred at center-back rather than central defensive midfield there are lot of central defenders now fighting for a first team start. Now whether they are all good enough for Newcastle, that’s another question.
We have Faye, Taylor, Ramage, Cacapa, Edgar and Diatta all fighting for a first team start. And when Habib Beye’s played at center-back he’s looked very good indeed.
What does this tell us? We’ll have to unload some of these in the summer, and bring in one new dominant center-back. We think Ramage and Cacapa may well go during the summer, and Michael Dawson from Spurs may come in.
Then we’ll have Faye, Taylor, Edgar, Diatta and Dawson fighting it out. And remember Edgar is still just 20 years old, and got a late run-out yesterday with the first team yesterday, for the first time this season.
What do you think?
