Oba Martins To Arsenal – He’s Going Nowhere

The summer transfer season is coming up, so we’ll be seeing a lot of old stories regurgitated and one today is that Oba Martins will be moving to Arsenal for £10M.

Oba Martins – a unique player who Kevin wants to keep

It’s true that Arsene Wenger is a big fan of both Oba Martins and Charles N’Zogbia, but Newcastle would like to hold onto both of these fine young players, who still have a lot of football development ahead of them.

The Nigerian international striker wants to play at Newcastle, which is only one of the reasons he is a firm fan favorite and Oba got an ovation when he left the field on Saturday after his efforts for Newcastle in their 2-0 win over Fulham.

Oba said yesterday:

“I am not the kind of player that will stay at the club without playing because I want to play,”

“I really, really want to help the team by scoring goals so, if I am not playing, it’s a little bit difficult for me.”

It was thought at Newcastle that it would either be Martins or Owen to start, and Michael would always get the nod from Kevin Keegan, but with Owen playing a withdrawn role in the last two games, and looking just great in that position, perhaps there is room for both players in starting roles at the club.

That’s what Martins would like, but going to Arsenal would only make a starting role more difficult wouldn’t it?

The three strikers of Viduka, Owen and Martins in a 4-3-3 formation have looked threatening in the last two games and seems to be working just fine. And we don’t see Kevin changing this team much as it reaps some success, at last.

There’s no doubt Oba is a special player, not only does he have unique skills, but he’s just a great character both on and off the field.

We know Kevin wants to keep Oba at Newcastle United and we see no reason for Oba to leave, and in any case he loves living in Newcastle and has brought some of his family over to live with him from Nigeria. We think he will stay at Newcastle – we hope he will stay at Newcastle. 😀

What do you think about this?

It’s essential that we keep Martins. He has the talent to go right to the highest level of football. I remember seeing him for Inter a few years ago and was amazed at his turn of pace and speed of thought in and around the goal. Although he’s done well I still don’t think we’ve seen anything near what he’s capable of. If he can learn from Owen and Viduka he could be a legend.

    yet more press rubbish.

funny how these unfounded stories surface just after we’ve won a game, isn’t it?

i see the Sun are also spouting BS about Ashley selling the club YET AGAIN.

you have to wonder why they bother employing all these journalists, when all they do is regurgitate the same malicious crap over and over again.

I hope you’re right Ed. He’s the biggest asset we have. Heron Mag is right, with a bit of time and patience, learning from experienced forwards like Owen and Viduka, he could be scoring goals with the regularity of Fernando Torres.

Newcastle United could be a top six contender if he continues to play up front for the next season, with or without the support of two other forwards. After that, who knows, top four, perhaps even the title.

Let’s hope Kev reads this site…….

Chris is right. More media crap. What it really means is that Oba is staying and Ashley is definitely not selling. If the press want to turn the world upside down then we can turn it back again. Howay the lads.

looks like i’ll be the one to put a damper on things.

Oba will never be better then he is now, and he is far from being our biggest asset. keeping Owen at the club is much more important so if Oba is running his mouth then we should let him go.

i don’t think Oba willdepart St James’s, he loves the fans and the club too much not to be part of what we are trying to build here. Alot is made of our players good and bad first the press criticise our players then we win a game and ALL our best players are wanted by top 4 clubs, wot a load of BONK. We have seen in the last few games how our players have picked up from the lowest point and fought their way back up and only they can decide our fate, and Oba has the heart of a lion along with Owen, Butt, Faye, Taylor, Smith or mybe hey are now playing for contrats elsewhere???????????

Im clearly in the minority with this but I just dont get the hero worship of this guy. From what I can see he is a completely of the cuff player, there is no thought or intelligence to his game. Ironically at this moment in time this is exactly what the team need at the moment as there is very little creativity anywhere in the team although Barton looked a little better.
Back to OM, I watch all the matchs, And people go on about this lightening pace, its no good having this pace if you use it incorrectly , the way to use pace is to either beat a man and go past him or be on the shoulder of the defender and burn him when the through ball or ball ofver the top comes. I can count on one hand how many times either of these thisng has happened this season. I dont think the guy is bad I just dont think he is the reincarnation of Eusebio that many fans seem to think he is.

Oba will stay if he’s playing regularly.

On Saturday as soon as Oba went off we lost our shape a bit and Fulham got more of the ball – even though we got the second goal. If we’re gonna bring him of (or anybody else for that matter) we need to make sure that the rest of the team can adapt to the revised way of play.

If anybody’s goint to leave it will be Viduka . Being replaced with someone like Crouch or Ashton

He is worth keeping and definatly worth signing on for some years to come. He is quick and powerful and cn make something from nothing. What he is not great at is taking the easy option. Playing with Owen will teach him some valuable lessons.

I just love these guys who favour Owen over martins.
Is it not funny how last season we did well playing Oba along Ameobi who we all know is useless.
Since Oba has been back Owen has looked 100% better simply because of the space Oba creates for him.
Is it not funny that despite Owen having a clause in his contract of 8Mil less than we valued him, not one team in the world of football was interested. There wasnt even a rumour.
Oba has more strength, more speed, a better shot, more spring, and six years on age on Owen, so I plus he is our ONLY striker capable of beating a defender for pace.
So UNLESS we get someone better, which will be impossible given our league position, he is our most important striker – without him our attack looked impotent.
You want stats then look at goals and assits per game ratio and see which of our players is on top. Also, Zog to start in home games on left with Barton on right of 3 man midfield please. Stick with Geremi for away games.

JJ you can say whatever you want, i stoped reading after the first 2 lines.

Oba is a decent player, and i like him. but he is dumb football wise and will never ever be first choice while Owen is here and he shouldn’t.

We’we been over this a million times. For me it’s a no contest. Owen is in a different class then Oba and the rest of the team.

Lets dispel this myth that there was interest by Arsenal. If they wanted him they would bloody well have him. Wenger may at some point of said he was an ok player but can you actually see him playing in an Arsenal team. The one thing in common with all arsenal players is they are intelligent football players. Unfortunately the one thing that Qba could never be accused of is footballing intelligence. As for this theory that he is the only player who can beat a man for pace. Can anyone tell me 5 or 6 occasions this has happened this season. I can show you 5 or 6 times in one game with players from the top 4 teams!

Let him be Arsenal’s problem. Arsen Wenger has a liking for wasteful players. Adebayor, Van Persie, Henry. They need 10 chances to score and only ever score when it is the most spectacular. £10m is not a lot in truth but a fair deal for a player who is only potential at this stage. His threats I do not like either.

    Footballing wise, he is illiterate.

JJ where did you get your info

The rumours about Owen have gone on since we signed him, Liverpool certainly tried to buy him when he left Real they couldnt match our offer and the reason no one bought him in the summer was he was 2 games back after a 10 month injury.

Oba is a player i like but to say he is better than owen is way wrong

I personally thought Lomano Lua Lua was better than martins, He had more ability and could create as well as score the only thing i disliked was his sniping at Bobby near the end of his time here.

If Oba wants to leave (which i doubt) then i would bring back Lua Lua as he has stated his intention to come back and his brother is here already, He also can play comfortably on the right wing as well as up front.

And is more suited to a 433 and 442 than Martins

Freddy Sheperd stated the clause the week after he left, but said it could not be activated in the January window.
To say Oba is not intellegent is unfair, hes running off the balll is great he can turn defenders nisde out. His only fault is perhaps he is a bit selfish in front of goal. But thats why he scores such spectacluar goals.
All Im saying is that you are bias because you are
    English.
Owen is a good player just over rated. He has many many weaknesses.
Shearer was World Class, Owen is good.
Oba is also just good, but has the potential to be great.

If Oba is good then Owen is great

Obas is more easy on the eye than Owen and he has plenty more attributes, I will be eternally grateful to Martins for last season because we would have gone down without his goals.

But he is greedy with the ball, And Also doesnt take his chances, Owen has missed a few the last 3 or 4 games but give them the same chances and Owen would win 100 times out of 100.

I do really like oba and it certainly is nothing to do with Owen being English, He is just plainly a better goalscorer as is Viduka with A better more creative midfield all three will benefit and so will the club with their goals.

Owen is world class – his football brain is amazing. His ability to read the game and be in position before any defender is an example to any kid wanting to be a striker. We all saw Owen’s football brain to great effect on Sat.

Martins we love, but will never be world class. He will still stay and sign a bumper deal in the summer anyway.

If Martins leaves then he will have to go to a crappy side like Wigan or Reading where he is guarenteed to Start every game as he and N’Zogbia are moaners and will never fit into sides like spurs and arsenal where they will have more competition for places than they do here. I didnt hear Milner or Emre moan when they werent playing despite being the best in their positions they were dropped by the fat man, Martins is playing 75-80mins and yet he still is moaning about being subbed

If we didnt have so many injuries last season then he would have been subbed or dropped on a lot of occasions as some of his performances were laughable.

Did he not notice that the Birmingham match we got an away point due to going to 442 and closing out the game and that in the fulham match owen scored after he went off to wrap it up.

He should look at it from the clubs perspective not his own selfish attitude with his silly tantrums.

we should keep playin the three up front its works great with owen dropping of and if he goes to arsenal he aint got a chance of getting a game martins is qaulity but he aint better than adebayor or van persie and walcott is also improving and they have bendtner and eduardo when he recors so i would advise him if he isnt a player that will happy sitting on the bench not to go to arsenal

Oba is a Scorer of Great Goals while Owen is a Great Goal Scorer. There is a difference. I prefer the latter.

PS: Van Persie is very wasteful.

Obafan i think that the mini revival is mostly down to Butt and Barton getting back to their best, Had the midfield been keeping the ball, shielding the back four and creating chances as well as they are currently, then we would have scored plenty more goals and conceded much less than we have this season.
