Riise Would Be Great Acquisition For Newcastle

10:29 am, Friday, March 28th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 44 Comments

John Arne Riise is no longer happy at the number of games he is playing at Liverpool, and he seems to have been marginalized at the Liverpool club this season.

john-arne-riise-34.jpg

John Arne Riise – would be great at Newcastle United

But that may be great news for Newcastle United and Kevin Keegan, because Riise would be a player who would easily fit into Keegan’s attacking style of play next season. We have to think that Newcastle would be really interested if the Norwegian International became available in the summer.

John Arne spoke to the Norwegian media earlier this week

“I am not happy. I am used to playing in 80 per cent of all the games.”

“But if I don’t get to play as much as I want to I have to make a choice this summer as to whether I should stay or not.”

Newcastle first objective, as usual, is to strengthen the back four in the summer but Keegan seems ready to offer the £3.5M fee for Riise. That would be an excellent acquisition for the club, and Riise would be guaranteed first-team football either at left back or left wing.

27 year-old Riise, who stands 6’1″ tall, has played 228 times for Liverpool and scored 21 goals. He has also played 68 games for his country, Norway, scoring 7 goals for them.

Riise can play on the left side of defense, midfield or attack, has massive experience, and a tremendous left foot with which he has scored some classic goals for Liverpool.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Riise wouldnt be a great acquisition for Newcastle.. another top 4 reject :)

  • 2 Midjew // Mar 28, 2008 at 10:37 AM

He is amazing player and would DEF fit well into Newcastle.

How great would it be to cheer his amazing left footed 30 Yard goals and KNOW thats your FULL BACK!!!!!!

  • 3 Callum // Mar 28, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Midjew – When was the last time Riise scored a 30 yeard goal? I think 2006 :)

He is past his prime and if he is not good for Liverpool, why should we sign him if we want to improve?

  • 4 John // Mar 28, 2008 at 10:43 AM

When was the last time Risse Scored? Shoots all the time and blazes high and wide. Cant defend to save his life, and is caught way out of position far too often. Totally agree that he would be another top 4 reject a la Duff, Smith, Babayaro. NO THANKS

  • 5 dsr // Mar 28, 2008 at 10:43 AM

looking at him over the past season or two, is he the player he used to be? And for anyone who watched Enrique cut inside his man at birmingham and unleash that rocket, surely you have to ask is Enrique not worth a run of games at this club? I honestly think Enrique once he gets into his stride will be every bit as good a player as Riise. He is solid in the tackle – reminds me a bit of Griffin in that he seems pretty no nonsense – but showing signs of being pretty good going forward. He’s younger than riise, and we paid a load of money for him, so do we need to go buying a big name LB who we know will demand to start ‘80% of matches’? Personally would like to see Enrique given time to make that position his own, with Tozer given the opportunity as backup. If we want another fullback, perhaps someone to back up Beye once we get rid of that idiot Carr?

Of course, if Zog goes, would happily see Riise replace Duff on the left of midfield…

  • 6 ArtyH // Mar 28, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Yes for £3m a great signing certainly better than we have got at the moment. Do you really think he will come though?

  • 7 jimd // Mar 28, 2008 at 10:44 AM

Riise would not be a good aquisition. I dont think he would add anything.. defensively not great. Not very good going forward these days.. lost a bit of pace. when was the last time you saw him score a 30 yarder – or even score? Liverpool arent exacltly blessed with fullbacks and he cant cut it there. We need to stop buying these players on their way down for too much money.

I’d rather stick with Jose if we cant get something much better. The lad hasnt been amazing but hes young, he’ll improve.

  • 8 Beezeri // Mar 28, 2008 at 10:51 AM

Great player and definitely better acquisition but what to do with Enrique if we manage to bring in Riise?

Riise is still reasonably young but I see Enrique only improving and it would be just daft to pay 5-8 millions for the norwegian and then drop the promising spaniard. Riise can play various positions though and he’s better LB than anything else

  • 9 Norwegianmagpie // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:03 AM

As a Norwegian magpie, I have to say that I really dont hope we sign Riise. He is a golddigger, has the brains and social skills of a 13 year old and doesnt show that much more intellegence on the pitch.
Fair enough, his athletism is good and he has a rocket of a left foot, but thats about it. His right foot is utterly rubbish and therefore he can only go one way when on the ball, his positioning is not that good and I also find his short passing and on the ball skills lacking.

  • 10 Gooderz // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:05 AM

If Riise wants to get back to his best then why not? It looks like at least one of Duff or Zog could well depart in the summer and Riise would provide cover there as well, thus Enrique’s development need not be stifled.

Otherwise, let Edgar, Kadar or even Tozer come through and cover LB if/when required.

  • 11 Stocksy // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Not sure, the fact he is only playing 80% of games for Liverpool should tell us something about him. We always seem to buy top4 failures. Having said that, we need to realise that we are not the big attraction as a club that we used to be!

  • 12 Knightbobmoncur // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Totally agree with the top four reject comments. if rumours are to be believed that KK will get a major war chest 50-60 m bandied about, then we dont need to sign top four rejects…………

If a player cannot get into a team in his rightfull position, then this means there must be a better player in front of him, if the player in front of him is rated as one of the top three in the world, then it wouldnt be a bad move signing the second choice (Are you following).

Eg Wayne Bridge behind Ash Hole…….. He would be worth a punt, but Riise behind Arbeloa??? Who???

We need to be aiming higher!!!!!

if we could pull of a maracle and get him and reyes our left side would be great

  • 15 Nick Dryden // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:35 AM

    No he really wouldn’t Ed!!
Another Duff. All head down, all one foot.
We need technically good footbllers (and coaches!!)

  • 16 geordie'o // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:36 AM

another duff, we want to be aiming to get to liverpools level not signing there burned out has-beens, same goes for signing tottenhams cast offs anaal

  • 17 Mr T // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:43 AM

oh dear me. Enrique comes good, a young Enrique 21 or 22 isn’t he? and then all of a sudden, signing a 30year to replace him. good business??

Don’t get me wrong, I like Riise, two years ago? yes. Now? no.

  • 18 Mr T // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:43 AM

on the subject of coaches, bring back beardo!

  • 19 Charlie Bucket // Mar 28, 2008 at 11:44 AM

NO NO NO! Don’t sign him please!

  • 20 Macca // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:01 PM

He’s good, he was very good a few years ago like in 2005, I’ve always been a slight fan of his, but we need better. Like I know we’re not going to anyone with a big name, like were not going to attract the likes of Ronaldo and such but if we’re careful and cute we can maybe get someone like Aiden McGeady. He’s a massive future, Riise, I’m sorry, but I think that he’s a has been.

  • 21 faustino // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Don’t sign him agreed….but he is far and away a better payer than Wayne Bridge. Can’t believe anyone would sign him.

I remember Rise tearing us apart a few years back at SJP; he was stunning. Now, he does seem to have lost it. Can’t belive he’s only 27 though!!! He looks about 32 easy! He should be on fire ffs!

  • 22 DC Magpie // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:03 PM

No thanks! Maybe 4 years ago.

Would be guaranteed a starting place either at LB or LW!???

Not on my team sheet. He might be guaranteed a seat on the bench to cover Enrique and Charlie (or his ‘better’ replacement)

    Next…

If our list of transfer targets contains players like Nickey Shorey, then I rather take Riise.

wrong timing to come.hope kk woun’t simply sign any player bcoz of just want to make up the number.Enrique & Edgar are enough to cover LB.

  • 26 HeronMag // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:29 PM

Sorry Ed. Riise’s a good player but why jeopardise Enrique’s development for a player who frankly just hasn’t been consistent for Liverpool.

  • 27 MichaelA // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Marcus, why do some people think Edgar is a left back. He filled in there under Roeder when we were down to 3 fit players, likewise with Huntington.

He’s a Centre Half who could learn his first team trade at right back in the same way Taylor did, but only if we are desperate in that position. I like him, he always looks calm on the ball but he’s never a premier league full back.

  • 28 singapore geordie // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:34 PM

Actually ed, why don’t you open an entry for us to shortlist players that we hope to see at newcastle in the summer? and from there we can vote for who we want and everyone will get a clearer picture.

  • 29 Davies // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:35 PM

Bizarrely, it seems that we now have enough on left back. Enrique, as everybody has rightly said, is starting to show real quality, and good commitment. The younger defenders such as Tozer and Kadar must be desperate to get into the first team and would, hopefully, make good cover, should anything happen to Wor Jose.

If we are going for a left winger, lets make it somebody who is a left winger first and foremost, not a defender who “can” play out left in midfield. Also, somebody with a few more years left in them. If Riise isn’t good enough for 80% under Rafa, then he won’t be good enough for Keegan.

  • 30 iain // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:38 PM

If our list of transfer targets contains players like Nickey Shorey, then I rather take Riise.

    ???

neither are great defenders but check how many goals and assists shorey has this season for reading compared to risse. shoreys younger and would cost less in wages.

3 goals and 1o assists for shorey.

    risse 2 assists.

shorey is a much better player when you consider neither are great defenders.

and if we want riise to play lw then i think i might cry becuase that would be so so depressing.

  • 31 Mson // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:42 PM

i would take bridge over riise but both are good

  • 32 Jesus of Nazareth // Mar 28, 2008 at 12:44 PM

NO, just no. Lets look for some back up for Enrique. Not sign some fat, overated ginger who will expect to start.

  • 33 James // Mar 28, 2008 at 1:04 PM

***** off Rise, our left back is Enrique and he’s here to stay!

  • 34 simen // Mar 28, 2008 at 1:34 PM

Even if I’m norwegian, I wouldn’t take Riise! He was good in the start for Liverpool, but he’s fallen behind. Poor technique, poor understanding of the game, when he gets the ball, he either knocks it up field, or runs with it in his feet without looking for other players.

The reason he scores some fine goals, is because he shoots 100 times per game. Sometimes one of them goes in the back of the net…

  • 35 CRAIGG // Mar 28, 2008 at 1:37 PM

Aaron Hughes can play left back, right back, centre back, quarter back, Guitar, Drums, Trumpet and anything else you want. Academy kid, loves the club, top defender on his day and on a free in the summer need i say anymore??

  • 36 simen // Mar 28, 2008 at 1:49 PM

I like Aaron! Bring him back! Good squad player:)

  • 38 ObaFan2 // Mar 28, 2008 at 2:13 PM

    Riise is only 27? lol

Not sure tbh, I prefer Enrique at lb and then a “Robert” type player infront (or one that will track back too!)

Both Zog and Milner are good on the wings to a point, neither seem to be able to finish what they start with a good pass or cross at the end of their runs.

They will either improve or leave! Zog will go probably and Milner will improve under KK I think.

Duff is similar too but he has played ok since coming back from injury but not even making the bench makes me think he’s out in the summer too.

  • 39 ToonUSA // Mar 28, 2008 at 2:22 PM

Hey with all the ownership mess they are in we should try and pick up Stevi G :)

  • 40 Leo // Mar 28, 2008 at 2:40 PM

answer to that. NO, he will only hold enrique back, either that or enrique will want to leave and i know which one i would want to stay….

  • 41 Andreas // Mar 28, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Imo Enrique should be our no1 LB if we don’t manage to get a player like Phillip Lahm (which we won’t manage btw).

Riise would be a great back-up LB/LM but since he want to start “80 % of the games” it’s a no-go. Not good enough to start ahead of Enrique and would only sulk as a squad player.

  • 42 Tom_Toon // Mar 28, 2008 at 3:28 PM

    Riise is tosh.

  • 43 Obafan // Mar 28, 2008 at 5:55 PM

I don’t think Riise would be such a big step forward in our search to a new left back.

I know it is only the Belgian League and the level is not that high, but a player who I really like is DANTE who plays for the best team in Belgium ATM (Standard). He has got technique, is very strong in the air, he is a leader (cool penalty taker), has good positional play and last but not least he is a fighter who wants the best for his team.

I recently read that he would love to stay in Standard, but that he would consider moving to a stronger league.

  • 44 Yong // Mar 29, 2008 at 2:41 AM

we have Erique, doesnt need Riise anymore, use Edgar as cover wil be enough. spent the money at other position !
