Newcastle Still Linked with Swedish Defender

There are continuing reports that Newcastle United and Middlesbrough are locked in a battle over Swedish center-back Jonas Olsson.

Jonas Olsson – 25 year old NEC center-back

Olsson, who turned 25 years old this month, is currently playing in the Dutch Eredivisie with club NEC Nijmegen, and there were reports back in January that Newcastle were interested in the defender.

The Swede has apparently been watched by scouts from the two North East clubs on numerous occasions, and is also being tracked by Champions’ League quarter-finalists Schalke of Germany.

NEC are understood to be willing to sell their man at the right price, and the player’s agent Martin Dahlin admitted that interest was growing.

The hard working central defender has made a good name for himself in Holland and Newcastle, Boro and Schalke have been tracking him for a while and are said to be ready to launch bids for the player in the summer.

Martin Dahlin said,

‘It’s no secret that there is interest from England and Germany.’

Newcastle’s weakness again this season has again been their defense, and that will be the number one priority for new Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan in the summer.

Olsson stands 6’4″ in height and has played for NEC 66 times scoring 4 goals.

Before that he was at Landskrona BoIS where he played 56 times and scored one goal. He played 18 times for the Swedish Under-21 side but has yet to be capped by the full Sweden side.

What do you think?

Comments very welcome.

We’re also said to be interested, according to various newspapers, in:

    1) Aaron Lennon

    2) Jose Antonio Reyes

    3) Luis Fabiano

I think there must be some truth in these players as we are constantly being linked with:

The papers make up the usual crappy lies apparently we are signing Jaasklainen, Dunne, Modric, Berbatov, Ashley Cole but they are usually a one off bull shit story, But i think you are seeing KKs list developing with the players above.

We also keep on getting linked with Riise which i hope isnt true.

Just Sign Michael Carrick and Aaron Hughes as well Kev and i’ll be delirious.

As a swedish newcastle fan i just have to point out that the player in the picture is 17 year old Ifk Gothenbrug midfielder Jakob Johansson
sporting his beautiful blue and white shirt. hope we are not after him! he is far from ready although he is a very big talent.

i think if we are only gonna sign 5 players they should be a cb a lb a cm a winger and a striker with the people we have been linked with i would go for
    van buyten /cueller
i agree with what keegen says we he says the sqaud has qaulity so i think another 5 top class players would do it

I think if we stay up that there will definitely be some quality defenders, midfielders and one class striker brought in.
Exciting times in the summer – just got to ensure Prem safety first – starting at Spuds today.

Defenders in Holland (actually most players) struggle in England because despite their good technical skills, they lack the strength to succeed.

Apparently Olsson was too physical in Sweden, so if his technical ability has improved and his transfer fee is fairly low then maybe he is worth a pop but as a squad player.

From what I have heard from friends in the Czech Republic, we are supposedly after Michal Kadlec, a left back from Sparta Praha. From what I have seen of him play he is a class above the leagues standard and has constantly been linked with Celtic, but to be fair, the league standard is pretty poor. Could be worth a gamble though, as prices here are lower in comparison to much of europe and we need a second left back
