Keegan Targets New Left Back for Newcastle

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has made the signing of a new left-back his top priority during the summer transfer window.

Jose Enrique – Spaniard is only recognized left back at the club

Keegan is going to revamp his St James’ Park squad which although it has quality is short on numbers. Especially in defense.

Keegan has already been linked with a summer raid for Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge and has admitted he would like to bring in a player with proven Premiership experience.

Keegan told The News of the World.

“We’ve got one left-back at the club in Jose Enrique and he could get injured or suspended,” “Whoever, we fetch in, we can’t sign just foreign players and expect them to know all about the Premier League.

“I’m not scared of taking a gamble, but we want some solid players who know the Premier League if we’re going to turn things round quickly.”

We have been short of a left back since Celestine Babayaro left last December, and now he cannot get his game at the LA Galaxy. But Newcastle have never replaced Celestine and there should be some good left backs available in the summer.

Nicky Shorey, Wayne Bridge and John Arne Riise are just three that may be available and would do a very good job at Newcastle. Whoever Kevin brings in has to be top class, that’s the priority.

We would like to see a center back, left back, a midfielder and striker brought in during the summer months. Those four new players seem to be the minimum required, and with some of the youngsters pushing through next season we should have a big enough squad.

What do you think?

Comments very welcome.

exactly what I’m thinking of, yes! one LB one leader at CB, CARRICK for BUTT replacement (he’s getting older and I think he needs more rests) and a striker/attacking midfielder (backup for OWEN – playmaker abilities) and we are definitely fine!

I’d like to see a right winger brought in, Milner has zero competition.

a left back to backup enrique because he isnt going to be happy being second best… because he is a good footballer

a center back, someone really dominant.

a CM carrick would be number one choice.

a right winger who can play in a 3 pronged attack also. someone like arshavin

Perhaps Jose Enrique needs a little cover, just in case of injuries etc. but he’s shaping up to be a fantasic acquisition.

I’ve been slagging Big Sham off for some of his questionable summer signings, but quite a few are really showing some top quality at the moment. Barton, Geremi and Enrique have become very solid in their positions recently and Faye and Beye have always looked good to say the least. Viduka is also starting to look very dangerous again. Cacapa has good days and bad days, but there have been several occasions when he has saved our skin, and he partners Steven Taylor very well when he’s in form.

The only dudds that Sham bought in appear to be Smith and Rozehnal. Smith may yet come good if he doesn’t get sold in the summer, but I think he will. There’s no hope for Rozey though.

Though it’s likely Newcastle would not have pulled a perfomance like Saturday’s out of the bag under fat Sham, it’s starting to look like he did do us a couple of favours last summer.

I wonder who he’s be looking for to cover left back should anything happen to Enrique…..

“We have been short of a left back since Celestine Babayaro left last December”

Not really well worded Ed I would have said:

“We have been short of a left back since Celestine Babayaro signed January 2005”

I know he had a shocker yesterday but i would have loved to have re signed Woodgate

But thinking ahead, I think Kev is interested in Reyes and Lennon for the wings Both risky as Lennon is a worse crosser than Milner and Reyes despite being hugely gifted is a mackem Resembling mard arse.

I would still like Gary Cahill and Gonzalo Rodriguez as CBs, Carrick as centre mid, Bridge as Left back and Djibril Cisse up front.

agree davies, i was never a fan of the style of play BSA had us playing but i always believed he brought in some class players and finally we got rid of alot f old wood, so maybe it wasn,t all bad BSA visiting newcastle for a little while.

seems alot of the ‘we need 7 new players’ crew are thinking differently now too?

LB: I dont think there is a more Keegan type attacking left back in the Premiership than Wayne Bridge.Stick a blonde wig on him and its Johnny Beresford.
CB: As far as im aware Richard Dunne has yet to sign a new contract at City and has previously played for KK.
DM: Same goes for Mathieu Flamini at Arsenal where contract negotiations have stalled.Flamini has been outstanding this season in a defensive midfield position for the Gunners.
AM: What better attacking midfielder to set the pulses racing than Barcas Ronaldinho ? He seems to have become slightly stale lately and we have the right Manager and Chairman in place to persuade him if he is looking for a new challenge.

    N’zogbia can play there.

So, we want a first team LB, or a second team LB?

It’s too cruel for Enrique if we bring in another one as I think he is really good. A second team LB won’t improve our squad and will never falls into anywhere near KK standard.

So, are we getting any LB?

I hope Enrique stays #1 choice. Does this mean we’ve all totally gotten over the idea that Zog can play left back….. cos he can’t!

When Rozenhal comes back we can just let him rot in the reserves and be our LB cover, cos nobody’s gonna wanna sign him!!

Why have we written off enrique? He’s a 6mill. promising youngster… man u developed Evra at the expense of a more experienced player. What’s the problem? I ask ya…

Enrique is a good player. He deserves his chance to cement the left-back position, but yeah he could do with some competition.

Glad to see he’s getting a run.

For me – Farfan is the natural choice for our big summer signing…. plays in the right role of 3 front men… or as a winger… scores 12 goals a season and would be magic pace to go with martins… doesn’t anyone else miss having a little peruvian magician on the right of the attack? Carrick in the middle for Butt and let’s get cracking…. Barton, Carrick, Farfan, Owen, Viduka, Martins….

    We need 4-5 players:

LB – Cover for Enrique. Maybe Shorey or Bridge.
CB – Someone dominant in the air and can dribble out of defence in the Kompany mould.
CM – Bit more pace and guile compared to our others, they should be a set piece specialist. Someone in the Modric mould.
ST – Big striker but pacey. Maybe Cisse.

and if time and money permits then a versatile winger e.g. RW and LW – McGeady

    Jobs a goodun.

i don’t think we need experienced LB like Shorey, Bridge, Chimbonda or Riise. Unless they are bargain buy.

i prefer young and talented potential LB to cover Enrique just in case he injured or suspended. This is because Enrique has played so well and we don’t need rotation system for LB.

    Save the money for other position like;
Forward to cover Viduka (high age)
MF to cover Butt (too many yellow cards) and Geremi (high age)

dont rate cisse – martins is better, and want carrol to get his chance – and if injuries kicked in we can either go to a two up front or put carrol in.

so makes sense when keegan says we need a bigger squad so he can change things around. Like the formation. – i would like to see bentley, tall midfielder – maybe carrick, but not that fussed, but he does knock it about quite well – however think he would be too much if we had to pay 6 for smith.
and ideally a young right back to cover for beye, a big name centre back, with flair.
    young left back too.

worry that we lack height still, also pace and flair

NUFCFAN how can you not rate cisse, he would be a great replacement for viduka because of his height and strength, imagine cisse, owen and martins up front, i dont think many defences could handle that

Another Geordie Latino is in order, Farfan has proven himself in the CL for PSV and hes got great pace

Would also go for de Guzman of Feyeenord and Carrick, bring the geordies back home!

We lack more in midfield, Butt isn’t getting any younger and neither’s Geremi and Barton will be picking up soap from the shower floors soon.

As for Emre, a shame really because his corners and set plays can be real good but he’s never on the pitch due to injury.

So it’s central mid fielders a priority,2 defenders and maybe an extra forward.

    Carrick for one.

Leicester City’s Joe Mattock has been getting decent write-ups recently ( in a struggling side. He’s a 17-year-old left-back and could be cover/understudy to Jose Enrique.

I agree with Tom Toon’s choices. What about Matias Fernandez at Villareal? If we can look at Reyes and Fabiano, this guy is surely worth a look. Fast, creative and got all kinds of skills. Our Spanish links with Jimenez are going to be incredibly useful. Carrick is a brilliant choice, but will be pretty expensive because Man U will want to recoup as much of the 18 million as possible.

Spyro, have you forgotten how Reyes and Cisse play in EPL? Cisse plays for Liverpool before this, and he is an injury prone player and he can’t do as well as he do in France league. So, what’s the point of buying him. Reyes quite good but that fella is not loyal and play for Arse before this. Mind telling me what’s the point of targeting those 2 players

Edgar would be happy to play in any position, he’s also proved his flexibility by playing LB, RB , CB and in midfield. It looks like he may be used like Aaron Hughes was and gladly accept any role for the benefit of the team !
