Nicky Butt has been talking today to the Newcastle Journal.

Nicky Butt – great all round midfield display on Sunday

Nicky talked to the Journal this morning:

“When you have three players in your side like Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen and Mark Viduka you have confidence that you are going to be able to hurt any team,”

“It’s our job in midfield to give them the platform to do their stuff and I think we’ve been able to do that. It’s our job to work hard and do the ugly side of the game, if you like, and that’s something I’ve been doing all my career.”

“They are the flair players, they are paid to score goals, we’re paid to back them up and make sure they have enough of the ball to be able to do that. Geremi and I are both experienced players, but I think Joey Barton has been fantastic as well in the last couple of games.”

“He’s not had the easiest start to his Newcastle career but he is showing what ability he has got.”

Now 33 years old, Nicky Butt knows he has just a few seasons left as a player, but they are years he is starting to look forward to. This is the new Kevin Keegan era at Newcastle, and Nicky can certainly do a great job for the club over the next two seasons.

We think Nicky knows that, and he has been one of the players that have stood up to be counted in these torrid times, along with Michael Owen, Geremi and Abdoulaye Faye.

They are the leaders of this new Keegan team still under construction at Newcastle.

Comments very welcome.

If Barton can start hitting the back of the net instead of hitting other people he could quickly become a hero on Tyneside.

He has a lot to do to win over the St James faithful.

nicky is a real leader as is MO and stevey harps, it pleases me greatly that the team is knitting together and also praising each other wich no one ever done fat ham!the keegan affect is even rubbing off on all our players, and filling one another with confidence, i can also understand why barton went looking for a fight in mcdonalds under big sam, if keegan or even jaunde ramos where here at this time it wouldnt have happned because i swear the players used to be encouraged to eat fast food, going by the way fat ham and his old number one striker kevin davies looks.

has anyone else noticed the vast improvement obafemi martins has made since coming back from the ANC, he seems a smarter player, better dribbler, and his shots are less wild

i previously talked about how nicky butt needs replacing i think david edgar could fill that role really well. he played well in dmf last nite.

joey barton has impressed recently and those who hope he goes to fail are foolish because we need him till the end of the season at least

obafemi martins creates space for everyone, viduka and owen exploit the space provided its good team work really

i feel so privileged we have martins and owen.

i hope we stick with this formation next season and stick with the front 3 if viduka can stay fit that is the thing we need to work on in my opinion is is the back four i think we could do with 2 centre backs and a left back and get rid of cacapa n rozenhal i think our signings should be something like
    cueller
    van buyten
    bridge
tiago or any other decent creative mid
    gomis
    given
    beye cueller van buyten bridge
    creative mid tiago barton
    owen
    martins viduka
    subs-harper gomis taylor butt milner
then i think we will go on and push for europe

there is something good to take from every goal in sundays match that shows improvement since Sam left. Nicky Butts goal showed their is confidence in the team, even our DM is shooting from range. Geremi’s goal was straight off of the training ground with Viduka cheekily moving out of the way. The third goal for me is the best as it shows the three strikers using their core competencies to contribute to creating a class goal. Martins pace, Viduka’s silky skills and Owens finishing. The link up for this goal was done to perfection. Lastly Martins goal shows that we will continue to attack and threaten the opposition defence right until the end of the game.
