Oba Wows Keegan As He Runs At Spurs’ Defense

Kevin Keegan has been talking about our unique striker Oba Martins, and what he told the Nigerian at half time in the game against Spurs on Sunday.

Oba Martins – run at the Spurs defense in the second half – wow

Keegan says he told the striker at White Hart Lane to be more direct, and Martins took note as he scored his eighth goal of the season, and the best goal of the game on Sunday.

Keegan told the Evening Chronicle today:

“I just said to Oba at half- time: ‘With your ability, when you get the ball turn and run at people’.”

“I said: ‘Don’t pass it to someone and try and play a one-two – turn and run at people’. In the second half when he did that I just said ‘wow’.”

“Mark Viduka is different from anyone in the Premiership and so is Martins, while Michael Owen is an outstanding player.”

“If you have got those three in the opposing half and trying to win you something, it doesn’t half give the ones behind them some confidence, even if they have conceded a goal because they now know that there are goals in us.”

“It’s not the end of the world if we concede the first goal like we did at Birmingham City and again against Spurs on Sunday because we now have the players and the system to put things right at the other end.”

Oba is certainly an exciting player to watch and someone no doubt Tottenham, and other sides, would love to sign in the summer.

But there’s just no chance of that with Oba and Michael Owen starting in the line-up together these days. Along with Mark Viduka, our best three strikers are all starting and playing very well together.

No wonder we scored 4 on Sunday, and we look forward to a lot more goals from the three of them before the end of this season.

anyone else noticed that Oba loves to score past Spurs? He has scored every single time we have playted them since he first arrived here.

Also Ed, i feel the 3rd goal was the best goal as it involved all 3 of our strikers and showed that defences simply do not know how to cope with them when they link up like that.

Martin’s goal was the best individual effort though….then again Butts goal was class….oh and Geremi’s freekick lol.

Martins is class and I am glad to hear that King Kev told him to run at defenders. This guys has menacing pace and defenders panic when they’re up against him. To have Martins pace, Viduka’s strength and Owen’s intelligence at the same time is causing defenders havoc. It was the formation I always wanted to see ever since we signed Owen! At last we now have a manager who knows how to get the most out of our players. Good times are coming ahead, can’t wait for summer transfers and see who’s coming in, and can’t wait for next season already! 🙂

The future is bright..The future is Black n White! 😀

gotta agree with you Spyro, the move and buildup for Owen’s goal easily made it goal of the game, they just cut through spurs like a hot knife through warm butter.

there is alot of key differences from fat sams team and keegans. viduka owen and oba in the team and smith out. to be fair to shambles sam he didnt have too much of a choice on that one.

but the best difference is that keegan is getting them to attack not contain teams

Martins is class and what is more important is that the guy loves wearing the shirt, playing for the team the fans and the management. This is the sort of player we need to keep and build the team around. Haway the lads

The great thing about Martins is – he is still VERY young. Can u imagine what he might be like in a season or two – when he’s got more experience of the premiership and had more tutelage from Keegan and co ………

they recon that lazio are going to swap baptista for pandev and money. so im not sure that will be happening. id love it to though. just been watching qauresma play, he is sooo skillfull but will not cut it in the prem, goes down too easy looks feeble, but i would love to see lucho gonzalez espec now they might be getting relegated, looks like the fella off of the mighty boosh so someone would have to cut his hair. i like the look of the constant link with us and fabiano though, great player. what does everyone else think?

agree with you there but i would much prefer Crouch to Pandev! lets not forget we still have youth players knocking on the door of the 1st team! we saw Carroll play on Sunday and he looked good. he handled the defender really well while playing for time in the corner and won a throw in! he too seems to have a strong physical presence on the ball! a perfect man to come in for the Duke should we require a replacement!

All in all, im feeling really good bout the Toon. Sundays performance on its own was well worth the wait! not to mention what is still to come!

Martins is a LEGEND in the making!!!

    UP THE TOON!!!

I think Smith is a bit jealous of Martins scoring. He looks like he’s strangling Martins in a photo on the official site.

Martins was awesome on Sunday in the 2nd half, but the best thing for me was his celebration. it showed the pure emotion of how much he had wanted to score for newcastle, when after his usual acrobatics he stopped looked up at the travelling fans and then just looked down and let out a huge yell and pumped his fist, seemed like in one second he released a seasons worth of frustration.

as everyone has said, a few tweaks/signings, viduka permanently interested, and carroll pushing him for the big man up front role, and things are looking much brighter with the 3 m’s up front (michael, mark, and martins!!!)

Finally Martins gets the positive comments which he fully deserves!!! Remember last year, a season where Martins was an atttack on his own and how he handled the defences and became our top scorer. This year under FSA he always had to play out of position which lead to lower belief in himself. In the beginning KK was manager Oba was in Ghana, so he had to come back quite late and he was out of form. ANd now he plays like he can; 90 minutes a danger fot the defences.

Well done Oba; I know he will stay cause he simply loves to play for the Toon!!! If we can keep Viduka fit and if he is staying; we just need one more striker and I would prefer GOMIS (Adebayor type of player with a great future ahead of him)…

left back, A strong midfielder, attacking midfielder and maybe a strong, intelligent and good in the air striker will do us good.

I’ve always said to me mates that if Martins used his pace more he’d be one of the best they’re is. He’s one of the best talents in european football and lads, we keep forgetting. He’s only 23. If we get Shearer as a part-time coach, To teach him a bit of finishing and that i can see a true legend in 10 years time, Who knows he might end up having a Geordie accent soon man.

    4-3-3 is the formation 🙂

I have the feeling that Martins finishing is already improving, and if you check out some of his goals he may already be a top finisher, i just think his shooting is seriously affected by his confidence

    4 paramount signings:
RB – (We have Edgar for LB cover) Gokhan Gonul (New Cafu, not Hutton 😉 )
    CB – Alex of Chelsea
CM – Pace and creativity through the centre someone like Modric or De Guzman but i dont know who as a realistic suggestion.
ST – Cisse – Tall and strong but pacey.

Then Aiden McGeady if money and time permits.

    RW/LW/RB/LB: 12 mill for Adriano

    CM: 12 mill for Biglia

    LW: 4 mill Vicente Sanchez

RW: Swap Zoggy for Lennon as he wants to leave and Lennon is less of a moaner

    CB: 2mill Cahill

LB I would say take a gamble by going after Dante of Standard in Belgium. Always one of the best defenders in the league and he might leave if an interesting offer from a ‘big’ club comes.

Lads, Biglia ain’t good enough. He was very good last season, but this season he is been an average player for Anderlecht.

ST: Gomis can be the new Adebayor. Imagine him next to Martins.

RW: Arshavin would be a very good buy, but if we could go for Lennon I would prefer him above the Russian international.

Obafan you are from Belgium and probably watch much more anderlecht games then me so you probably have the best view of Biglia, however, if he was good last yr it shows he has the ability to be a great player, If we were to sign him hopefully under KK he will improve. He is only 21 or something

I too would prefer to lennon to arshavin, we already have a RM/AM/SS in James Milner

Spyro, I agree with you Djibril Cisse is a striker we should sign, that one run against England shows you his pace, no-one can keep pace with him even when he has the ball and they dont!!

His scoring record is excellent and he wants back in to the premiership, but Manchester City want to sign him while he would like to go back to Liverpool, still fingers crossed.

Can I just say thanks to fat Freddy and Roeder for getting in a player with such physical attributes and potential. Yes I know they’re long gone, but this is only 2 and a half years late…
Let’s hope he becomes more prolific and intelligent with the ball.

Oh and there’s no way we’ll be signing Cisse, what a waste of money that would be.
