Joey Barton Showing Top Form Despite His Problems

April 2nd, 2008 · 83 Comments

Kevin Keegan has acknowledged that Joey Barton is starting to play up to his top form, in spite of his well documented off field problems.

Joey Barton - had a great game on Sunday

Keegan now feels that the Liverpool born England international has matured into a fine all-round performer, and Keven was delighted with his display in the extremely impressive win at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan told the Newcastle United official website.

“As the game went on he just got stronger and stronger,” “I said to him afterwards, ‘That’s the best I have seen you play’.”

“He had some very good games for me at Manchester City but I don’t think I have ever seen him as outstanding as that.”

“He was winning tackles, bursting forward and picking out passes and it was his work which set up Oba (Martins) for the fourth goal.”

“And credit to him, he has got some problems off the field which are well documented, but he has come in and trained properly and worked hard and is reaping the rewards now.”

We’re not sure what will happen in June when Joey’s trial comes up where he is charged with assault against his former Manchester City team mate Ousmane Dabo.

But it sure looks like Joey can be a top player if he can control his anger tendencies, once he has had a drink. Everybody likes to see people overcome their demons, which we all have, and the Newcastle fans are no doubt hoping that Joey can go on to bigger and better things at the club.

But first of all he has to face his trial in June and continue to get counseling that will help him personally.

If he can do these things, he has a fine career ahead of him at Newcastle United, that’s a near certainty. And many people at the club, like Kevin Keegan the manager, are only too happy to help him through this.

But only Joey can grasp this huge opportunity he has in front of him, with both hands.

We really hope he does just that.

Comments welcome.

    under the carpet i hope

  • 2 Marty // Apr 2, 2008 at 16:18

Always thought he would be grt to have at the club if he would concentrate on playing n stop getting in brawls n other stuff because the guy is A CLASS PLAYER if he just did that.
Lets hope he can sort things out on the other parts of his life because this is the type of player we need at this FULL HEARTED CLUB. :-)

  • 3 Obafan // Apr 2, 2008 at 16:34

Okay, he took his second (not the first time he gets a second chance) and last chance. I just hope for him that he now has learned his lesson, cause one wrong step and he could be in bigger problems (no football future).

So let us hope he keeps his concentration on NUFC, cause he has been fantastic recently (which I never thought).

  • 4 Doctapaul // Apr 2, 2008 at 16:58

A lot of players have stepped up to the mark in the last 4 games or so.

Some of the aggression has gone from Barton’s game which may be no bad thing. AND better still, if he replaces that with guile and talent it will be a good thing. Some of his 20-30 yd passes have been sublime. It’s the odd awry short pass that Joey needs to sharpen his wits around. Because when he loses a simple short pass to opposition on the half way line, usually most of the players are in front of him, and it gives the opposition to outnumber us on their counterattack.

Barton is on the road to recovery in his football. If he can sort out his off field problems we may well yet see the best of him at St James. I don’t think I would have been saying this about 6 weeks ago.

Also Geremi is proving to be one of our most intelligent players. I like my wingers to ghost past players (a la Ginola and Zog when he’s on form; where was he on Sunday by the way?) AND Geremi is something different. He plays a canny short game, he tucks in well and covers for Baye when he makes his forward runs. And best of all (like our own Lee Clark used to be) he knows how to get the ball in the centre without having to run past a defender. Now that he’s finding Viduka (or whoever) he is proving far more effective in the 433 formation.

It’s good that Milner will have to fight for his place when he is fit because the pressure will be on him now to up the effectiveness of his game.

The light at the end of tunnel got a lot brighter on Sunday.

  • 5 ScottyT // Apr 2, 2008 at 17:44

well i have to say that i am always prepared to give players chances but after the way barton had been performing andwith him gettin in bother agen i thort enuf was enuf nd we shud get rid…

but credit to barton he has shown he can still play at a high level in the last few games so the tag of thuggy barton i was using ill take away for the moment and give him another chance. if he can continue the form from fulham and spurs then itll be good for him and the club. well done joey.

  • 6 James // Apr 2, 2008 at 18:22

He’s only here so he can get used to wearing Stripes…see you in jail Joey

  • 7 King Kev-4-3-3 // Apr 2, 2008 at 19:06

james, u do my head in with your negative comments

  • 8 James // Apr 2, 2008 at 19:13

King Kev - a lot of people would give their left arm to play professional football, and it annoys me to see Barton being allowed to.

This is a professional footballer then?:

    1) He beat a man unconscious, twice

    2) Stubbed a cigar out in a players eye

    3) Smeared food over a 12 year old Newcastle fan’s autograph book when asked for his autograph

    4) Beaten a player to a pulp during training

    5) Spent Christmas in prison

Yes, in the last 2 games his form has been good. But if there is any justice in the world, Joey Barton will be thrown in prison later this month and be exiled from wearing our shirt ever again.

  • 10 ScottyT // Apr 2, 2008 at 19:31

james - tbh exactly my feeling towards barton and ive said that since his last assault but..

since keegan arrived he was given another ‘last chance’ and no ‘incidents’ so far and form seems to be picking up so ill give him 1 more chance again but yh i get your point.

  • 11 James // Apr 2, 2008 at 19:49

ScottyT - Every player/person deserves a second chance I agree, but how many second chances has Barton had in his career now? It won’t be long before he has a fight with Butt or Martins or beats someone else up during the summer.

Fat Sam said Mort refused on 3 separate occassions to buy Barton, and had to be convinced by Sam who said don’t worry he’s a new man. How does he repay Newcastle and Mort? By beating a man to a pulp and spending Christmas in prison.

Its such a shame because he is a great footballer.

I will support him till the verdict because he’s one of our players, but I won’t miss him when he’s gone.

  • 12 ScottyT // Apr 2, 2008 at 20:06

yes i agree he has had too many chances and im totally the same m8 ill support him for now but if he does go down then so be it it wont be a huge loss to me - ave slated him badly in the past cos hes been utter shite and cos i felt he shud have been sacked after his last incident but hes still here so yh ill support him specially after his improved performances lately

ave also sed in the past what a stupid decision it was to sign barton and get rid of parker and i still stand by that but hopefully barton will prove us wrong .. hes eventually startin to at least

  • 13 walker // Apr 2, 2008 at 20:27

its got nothing to do with us what joey does or is supposed to of done.all im bothered about is how he plays. just judge him on his football then if thats not good enough have a go.

  • 14 CRAIGG // Apr 2, 2008 at 20:39

When Barton kills someone some of you might just start to think that theres more to life than how he plays on a saturday Talented or not.

  • 15 walker // Apr 2, 2008 at 20:50

until that unlikely event drama queen i dont care what he does.

  • 16 CRAIGG // Apr 2, 2008 at 21:32

I dont see how it is so unlikely he nearly blinded someone with a cigar, Beat his team mate up for not passing to him in training, Beat some people up so bad he was nicked and locked up, Kicked Etuhu in the balls as they went for a high ball for no reason, Through a punch at Maloney a couple of weeks after being let out on bail and Has a racist murderer for a brother, He is an evil yob and i dont think that he should live such a privileged lifestyle

If me or you had done stuff like that we would be looking at a long stretch .

  • 17 ToonKing // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:20

come on people what do you care what he does in his spare time ?? i’m pretty sure he doesn’t give a flying fook what we do in our spare time so why should we. We don’t go to jail if he fook’s up, he does, so what’s the fuss about ?? . But the thing he and us care about is Newcastle United, if he does he’s job there then we are all happy including Joey and vice-versa. If he’s shit playing for us then yes we have the right to judge him but not in his personal life.

Thanks mate! Cant live without my 2am matches.

  • 22 daiv // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:33

Forget Mr J Barton. He’s going to do a spell at Her Majesty’s Institution. He’s history.

  • 23 Spyro // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:37

yeah i dont care about his off the field behaviour, i care about the football thats it

  • 24 daiv // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:44

    Spyro
Thats rubbish. Hes a nutter who beats people up. Its ok being a rapist or murderer as long as he plays OK for NUFC? Hes played two decent games out of 32 and now hes a top player? Wise up.

  • 25 scott9 // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:50

barton is a great player and i think keegan is the man to get the best out of him definatley barton has looked a lot better unfder keegan hes great at putting confidence into players n thats wot hes done with barton

  • 26 Tom_Toon // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:50

Well he isnt a rapist or a murderer, hes had a few scraps and done a few silly things in the heat of the moment. Dabo didnt exactly look that bad.

  • 27 Spyro // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:56

exactly tom toon, some of you lot are way over the top. So he has committed a few crime, dont any of you know any people who attract trouble? I got a few mates who attract trouble and often get a bit rowdy, so what, its not a big thing.

  • 28 Ausgeordie // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:56

The only raping I saw was the Spurs midfield getting bent over and plugged on saturday!

  • 29 Spyro // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:57

anyway, we only know half of the story when it comes to Joey Bartons crimes, how do we know he wasn’t seriously provoked into doing all that stuff? so what he has a bad temper, big deal

  • 30 Spyro // Apr 2, 2008 at 22:59

and no daiv, he is a top player because of what he has done before those 32 games, he is a good player and has proven that on many occassions. Anyway, what happened to going along with what KK believes? KK likes him and sees he is a good lad and a great footballer, so just leave it

  • 31 richie // Apr 2, 2008 at 23:02

well dragoner tomtoon et al , haven been on in while, joey is starting play well i tipped this,,hopefully stay out of truoble and continue t improve under kk

hes a player that can b a part of a better newcastle side next season………

  • 34 Spyro // Apr 2, 2008 at 23:13

And by the way, since when did people get punished for having racist relatives?? thats just stupid

  • 35 domtoon // Apr 2, 2008 at 23:47

geordiegerrard in the making. i don’t think it’s right to judge him. he who cast the first stone etc. he has 1 more chance - 1 more!!! and the next incident he’s probably gone regardless of whether he serves time at Her Majesty’s Pleasure. allardyce bought him, he’s done a few more stupid things before xmas, now kk is in charge of him and the situation isn’t keegan’s his fault. he says he’s seen good in the guy so let him do his best for us and if he somehow turns the sorry situation around, then he’s done himself well. the guy gets paid shedloads for playing for the toon so unless he messes up under the king, i say we get behind him and let the courts decide his guilt. plenty of reformed people in the world, let’s hope barton is one of em.

Daiv…32 games he played you said…hmmm.
Didn’t he miss the first 8 games mate, wasn’t he suspended on 2 or 3 games.
When the team is playing good like at the moment…just relax and enjoy.

  • 39 KKN39 // Apr 3, 2008 at 1:23

well maybe i’m just being irrational when it comes to NUFC … don’t care his off-field problems but if he plays well for the club, the fans and other teammates he’s good enough to stay and should receive support from all black n white. more performance like his at white hart lane certainly wont hurt. plus, in more practical sense, is it easy to replace him, an all-rounded box-to-box English midfielder with bags of experience and potential and carved for EPL games from Day1, with the 5.8m paid last summer?

  • 40 Vitorbarbosa // Apr 3, 2008 at 2:54

For me, football isn’t end on the pitch only. Every footballer carry our image, our brand. They are our ambassador. They are the faces on our sites, on adverts. Football watch by communities around the world, from a very young kid to old man.

In some places, they see their football idol faces more than their presidents/prime minister. So, they should lead by example and show positive characteristics.

For Joey Barton case, I won’t judge him guilty until the court say so. He has history of bad behaviour, who doesn’t has a dark history?
But, he is mature enough to decide what he is doing. If he choose to punch and kick people, then the authority will take charge. If he choose to play badly, we will take charge.

  • 41 Doctapaul // Apr 3, 2008 at 4:51

If we disallowed people coming to football matches when they have been charged (not found guilty) of misdemeanours ( the same principles that some of us are wishing to advocate for Barton) we might end up with half empty stands.

Do I know all the facts about Barton’s cases - no.
Do I suspect that he was provoked - yes.
Do I believe he has unhelpful, animalistic responses or habits that get him into trouble - yes.
Do I believe he needs help to sort himself out - yes.
Do I believe that KK is one of the best managers to contribute to that help - yes.
Do I believe that Newcastle supporters can help - yes.
Do I want to help personally, by vocalising my support when JB does great things on the pitch - yes. because it’s my prerogative to judge whether I get value for money when I pay to watch football (or not as the case has been until recently).

And if I said no - that’s ok too because it’s my choice.

So regardless of how high or low we regard Joey Barton (and unless we collectively choose to hound him out of Toon - count me out) all this banter is a bit academic.

Barton has the opportunity to do his talking (at least for now) on the pitch. The question is - ARE YOU WILLING TO LISTEN?

  • 42 Dirk // Apr 3, 2008 at 8:22

dabo provoked barton, infomation came out after the attack that dabo was saying something about bartons mother. dabo then came out and said that he was only jokin when he was taking the piss out of barton, maybe some of you should check ur facts before u condemn him.

  • 43 Knightbobmoncur // Apr 3, 2008 at 9:11

CRAIGG & James are Barton Haters, no point in arguing with them, they are gonna be right!!

Me, I agree with those in the let him get on with his job group, until proven guilty!! If guilty, he gets what he deserves, if not guilty, CRAIGG and James will find something else to whine about, Guaranteed!! They are always whining on here!

As for your comment CRAIGG “If me or you had done stuff like that we would be looking at a long stretch ” wrong, wrong, wrong!!You would get an ASBO………which is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard, but sadly this is the state of affairs this countries Justice system is in.

Bartons indiscretions at club level are yet unproven also, and as S.Pearce is to stand for the defence, i am presuming there is more to the Dabo case than meets the eye.

Do you know exactly, what was said to Barton when he lamped the blokes at Macci D’s?? I think they called his brother a racist murdering B****** or something, this may be a fact but has it anything to do with him??? and as you have accused him of the same hopefully he will whack you on your Bugle should he ever meet you, as i would, human nature matey!!!

  • 44 Leo // Apr 3, 2008 at 9:12

yeah dirk and i had heard that the kid that joey stubbed his cigar out on tried to set his shirt on fire… dont know if thats true but thts what i was told

  • 45 Knightbobmoncur // Apr 3, 2008 at 9:18

    DOCTAPAUL!!
    Cock on mate, cock on!!!!!!

    Richie
I too have had my disputes with dragoner & Tom Toon in the past, they seem to be willing to portray there opinion, and when there opinion is wrong………they rather adequately forget all what they have said in the past!! DRAGONER is a gooner anyway…he has a season ticket at the emirates (its not its my girlfriends bla bla bla)so he talks out his arse anyway!!!!

Dragoner stated that BSA was doing wonders at NUFC on and off the pitch…………I close my case!!!!

  • 46 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 3, 2008 at 9:26

i have also heard about the kid trying to set his suit jacket alight. Also the reason joey and dabo had a fight, was because dabo was banging on how he wasnt going to run at training, how he plays good football on decent pitches, going on about the clubs he had played for, so i think joey barton was right to teach him a lesson.

if anyone here had someone in there team or at work banging on about where they been in there career and what they have done that you havent you would start to get annoyed, you go up and say something, the bloke pushes you, then what would you do in all honesty, you would retaliate like barton did.

also everyone is making out what a bad person he is forhaving a scrap after a night out. WHO HERE HAS NEVER HAD A SCRAP AFTER A NIGHT OUT????? YEAH THOUGHT SO!

  • 47 ronaldeano // Apr 3, 2008 at 9:37

    @Knightbobmoncur

I too have had some heated arguments with Dragoner. One of which was 2 weeks ago, and i have never seen the effing prick on this site since. He is a fool that hasent got an effing clue about football in any way, shape or form.

I hope that if anyone who see’s this sory excuse for a man on this blog again, tells him where to go and then completely ignores him, then hopefully we wont have to put up with his shit ever again.

Dragoner, you are a clown, a fake, and a complete mong.

  • 48 Mitch H // Apr 3, 2008 at 10:01

Firstly, Joey poked the guy in the face with his cigar, after the lad had tried to set Joey’s shirt alight?

Then there was the training ground incident with Dabo. Bust-ups like that happen everyday on training ground. It aint a big deal, its just usually the players involved tend to brush it off, take it like a man, then at some stage kiss & make up, not just go bitching to the polis.

The Mc Donalds incident, well i heard that the lass Joey was with, got spat at, all in her hair.

Now Joey shouldnt have been there, shouldnt have been out drinking that late either, but if someone spits in our lass’s hair, i’m gonna react, & so would most men in know?

Also, i think the rasict accustions are bang out of order. Joey has no control over the actions of his relatives?

Get off the lads back man. All you so called NUFC supporters who continuously call for Joey’s head make me sick. We aint running a nunnery here, its a football team, you know, get stuck in, take no prisoners, up & at em type shit, not all this self-rightious PC drivel were keep hearing from some so called fans on this site.

Howay the Lads & Keep the Faith !!

I dont praise Joey for his actions in the past, but I’m hoping he’s turned a corner for the better with KK managing him. I agree that footballers are seen as role models and should try to behave themselves, but they are only human - we make mistakes.
Isnt Dabo ment to be a hardman himself? I find it hard to believe he couldnt defend himself to Joey, it’s not like he’s a big lad!!
And the xmas assault, I believe the people were said to be provoking him for a reaction…unfortunate for him he snapped at it and ended up where he did.
Innocent until proven guilty I think the saying goes.
    Get behind the team/players :)

wow europes calling tottenham, have you ever heard of championsleague?

spyro you should just stop your mate commenting… its not hard to stop him having the computer… give him a slap from me haha

  • 77 CRAIGG // Apr 3, 2008 at 11:55

ronaldeano, Spyro changed his name because he was proved wrong about The messiah and if you look back through the archives it was dragoner and not Spyro that said that so he can now be fickle under a changed name and spout praise for KK

Knightbobmoncur: ok maybe a bit OTT but if you went to work and kicked someone in the bollocks or threw a punch at someone you would be sacked on the spot.

But anyway as i usually say i think Barton is a terrific player and i hope he straightens out his life and puts the past behind him.

but if I beat up someone you knew would you want to see me paid £60k a week, live in a mansion, drive a ferrari and get off scott free.

    I doubt it.

CRAIGG, oh sorry didnt realise you knew the bloke JB beat up on!!!!!! I stand corrected you were right to slag him off!!

And i would expect to be sacked if i kicked a colleague in the pods for no reason at all…..is that what happened to Dabo???or was there a hint of provocation?? Who knows……….

    ???????????????????????????????????????????

    Whats your point??

I dont give a shit what him, the pope or the queen are paid……..
I earn my money i spend my money, and if mike tyson wants to bite Evander Holyfields lug off, I dont give a flying………….
It aint gonna effect my wallet!!!

SPYRO/DRAGONER/Bob, whatever your name, you have proved time and time and time again that you know shite all!!!

Keep up the good work of talking shite, it gives us blokes in the know loads of pleasure putting you back in your place….!!

  • 80 Spyro // Apr 3, 2008 at 14:41

tut tut tut Craigg, if that was the case then why would i let everyone know i changed my name?

I EVEN HAD THE NAME ‘SPYRO A.K.A DRAGONER’ FOR GODS SAKE! LOL

that puts an end to that ridiculous theory. Also, i have not changed my story on KK, in fact, i said i will make my judgement on next seasons performance. He has done well in the last few games but it is about consistency and unlike tom toon i have NEVER EVER apologised and said i was wrong, and i will not until KK achieves what i said he wont, a UEFA cup spot, simple

  • 81 Spyro // Apr 3, 2008 at 14:43

and also, i still go by dragoner sometimes, pay attention people lol

  • 82 Spyro // Apr 3, 2008 at 14:45

also, you “blokes” dont really know much, which is why i tend to discuss players and teams with those who know more about football on a more international basis.

  • 83 Knightbobmoncur // Apr 3, 2008 at 15:20

Hey little kiddies dragooner,(Spyro is a little pinky purple dragon!! Say no more) still see your spouting the same old shite on here that you always have done. Always wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong ….

Allardyce was great for the club, results are picking up, this was when we went on our worst ever prem run by the way folks. Dragoners predictions were always spot on!! NOT!!

Have you predicted anything right this season have you.

Keep ” discuss players and teams with those who know more about football on a more international basis.” Then, because your garbage spout is not wanted here, and you might even learn something about NUFC and the beautiful game!!!

Come back when you have something CORRECT to say you silly little arsy nil fan!!!
