Sam’s Summer Buys Proving Good

We weren’t sure how the 9 players players Sam brought in during the summer would fare this season, since a lot of them hadn’t played in the Premier league.

abdoulaye-faye-676.jpg

Abdoulaye Faye – playing strong at center-back for Keegan

But it’s turning out that a large number of Sam’s summer signings are coming good under Kevin Keegan. The starters on Saturday included Abodulaye Faye, Habib Beye, Joey Barton, Jose Enrique, Geremi and Mark Viduka, so there’s six of the nine who are currently in the starting line-up.

Alan Smith has been dropped to the bench, and Claudio Cacapa is injured again, and of course David Rozehnal is on loan to Lazio, and is unlikely to make it in the Premier League.

So it would look like we have at least 6 good players who are currently playing a part in the up-tick in form of the team under Kevin Keegan.

We think that’s good and big Sam should be given some credit for bringing these players to the club. It cost us a net amount of only about £10M for the players, so that looks good business now.

Of course we’re still very unsure of what is going to happen to Joey Barton, with his court case due in June, and there’s a chance he may end up in the slammer. If that happens, we’re not sure of what the attitude of the club will be to that embarrassment.

So there’s still a cloud over Joey, who is nevertheless starting to show his best form, to his credit – and seems to be enjoying his football these days. But there again, who doesn’t like playing under the ever positive and supportive Kevin Keegan.

We think the real reason that got Sam the sack was the way he had the team playing, which was hardly good to watch. Add to that some of the players he wanted to pursue in January, which we think included former Bolton captain Kevin Nolan, and Mike Ashley wasn’t too impressed with the direction the club was headed in.

But we’re also sure that Sam got a nice big payoff from the club, and he’ll be happy enough to take over another Premier league team in the summer, and be better off at the end of the day for his experience of 8 months at Newcastle United.

pu$$y, “i want to play center half but I was played in midfield” what an incredible injustice, imagine being asked to play out of position and at only 40K per week, shocking.

and I thought Roz looked his best in holding midfield what an absolute pansy. hope he rots in serie A

if it was Taylor who had said that people would be shouting abuse at allardyce for playing him out of position. but because its rozehnal its all his fault. All players bought by Sam should be given a chance under KK, they may come good like the rest

I agree with Leo, It’s easy to be negative about players and I am as guilty as many others. But many of the players are starting to come good so there is no reason why Roz shouldn’t, depends of course whether he wants to.

the only real duffer is Smith – he brings nothing to the team and frequently gives the ball away / or dives in with two footed tackles. He seems like a good lad but that hardly qualifies for him playing week in week out – personally I’d sell him and try and get our cash back

This article only serves to show us how fickle football fans really are. Weeks ago they were all failures and now they’ve played a couple of good games, we’re deciding most of them were astute signings all along? It’s fine being positive and upbeat because of the recent results but lets not get carried away praising these guys who’ve been left wanting for the majority of the season.

    Couldn’t agree more Sparetheman.
2 wins and the rest of this horrible season is forgotten?
A lot of players have failed badly and we are in need of a major overhaul to the squad this summer still.

tayler’s not that good and he is certainly very inconsistent. get some money for this lad now. he will not be getting any better. taylor has played over 100 games for us and he has not improved a bit. yes, he’s a toon product and he seems to be loyal, but we need a couple of center halves that are much better than he is. he should not get a penny more for his services with NEWCASTLE. sell the lad now. with the exception of OBA, MICHAEL, FAYE, BAYE, HARPER(GIVEN), GEREMI, N”ZOG and ENRIQUE, the whole lot of them should go. we need young, hungry, ambitious, loyal talent for the KING.

Spyro – Agree with you there m8. Some players (Milner, Taylor, …) have to play very very bad before some of the fans here start to see that. They are like protected. Other players (Cacapa, Duff, Geremi, …) play half as bad and they get lots of criticism. I know everybody has got his favourite player and you stick with him as long as possible, but sometimes it is just not fair how much critics some players get. I read a comment about Geremi who is bad, but I say that he is very usefull right now and that after the ACN he became a totally different player. He played very bad under SA and that is why they keep pointing at him. Just not fair IMO. I hope Geremi gives more assits and scores a few free kicks in the upcoming games and then they will have to change their view on him.

On the other hand I think something happenned behind the scenes with Roz, cause it was very strang that KK let him go just hours before the deadline was closed. Especially strange cause KK said that nobody could leave the club, cause the squad was too thin. I really think Roz blew it and he will be sold in the summer. But who is going to want him and for which price?

moomfan – agree with you about Taylor. If teams want to pay a huige amount for him we should sell him. He is very inconsistent (recent games were okay, but how long will he hold that level???). We need a leader with pace next to Faye or Cacapa (once he gets back he will prove that he is a very good defender, just his pace concerns me a bit) and then our central defence will be solid.

I think we should go for Gourcuff, perfect player to add a few goals and creativity to our CM, still young and is a KK player. He thrives on confidence and KK will give him lots. If not then get Kahlenberg.

It took 10 games for Fat Shams vibe to kick in, another 12 to show how bad it really was & 10 games for KK to ‘start’ pulling it round!..Any player here that has started to show some form is down to KK…Which leads me to believe that he could get the best outta Roz aswell, also Cacapa & who knows, he may even sort Smith out, stranger things have happened!..
…But please, if eveything doesn’t go to plan in the next game, don’t go saying get rid of so & so etc…It’s really dull!..
    …Have some patience!..

Sort of agree with sparetheman about the fickleness of fans, but I think you’re approaching it from the wrong direction.

Rather than not rushing to praise them for good performances, we should rather be not rushing to criticise them and question their ability when they’re not playing well. OK, so many have not been playing great, but for most of them we know from their record that they are good players in bad form, so it helps nobody to call them crap and call for their sale – that will only prolong their bad form. If everyone believed in them it’d improve so much better – which is why Keegan managed what he did at the weekend.

How can people speak badly about Taylor when I can honestly say I have only seen him play bad twice (and I have seen him alot of times!!). He is over protected because the lad gives 110% every game just like James Milner!! That is why they are over protected, because they’ve earned it!! It pisses me off to hear fans talk shit about both these lads when all we hear from these so-called fans is..if the players show they’ll die for the shirt then thats all we can ask for and we’ll back them all the way…. unbelievable if you ask me. Both are young, talented, honest professionals and British..what else do you guys want FFS!!!!!!! Stop talking shit and open your eyes…we wouldn’t be in the EPL if it weren’t for these 2!

Geremi has done okay in the last few games, but he should still be offloaded in the summer. KK can run faster than him. He has no legs at all.

We all have players we want rid of this summer, but I think KK will only get rid of the ones he gets bids for. I’m not sure he will try and get rid of people straight away because the squad is so small.

I still believe the 2 immediate issues are securing survival and getting Owen and Martins resigned asap.

JP from The Rock of Gibraltar – Okay they both give 110% every week, but are they always that effective. If they play good I will be the first to clap my hands and admit that I was wrong, but they are both young and they both make mistakes that is normal. But if they make vital mistakes (like Taylor has done a lot this season) and some of the fans here say so then everyone else should accept that. But no some of the people here are covering the British lad and blame someone else (how many times, not the Pompey game, was Cacapa not the guilty one when Taylor played an awful game???).

And compare the starts from the last 4 games from Geremi and compare those with the stats of Milner (…? games); then you honnestly have to say that Geremi fully deserves his starting spot and if he continues this form (which I do not doubt) and Milner gets back then don’t start to yell that Milner needs to start cause he is British. The best player has to play and that is that.

Obafan- Both may not have been outstanding this season but then again no-one has been. Although I strongly believe that the player on form is the player that should start. I have no problem with other players keeping them out of the team it just annoys me to see fans with such short memories. Both are great professionals and talented pros who must stay at Newcaslte. They are pretty consistent comparing to other players in the league, just maybe not this season. As I said they are both young and still far from their full potential, I can see them both playing for England in the future. I would bet on that!

I still think that some of the present achievers could have played better earlier. Perhaps they can see their end of season P45’s. Two games and they become heroes? We still need 5 or 6 quality players. If they are good now why not before? That is the question needing an answer. And next season can we have a decent striped shirt instead of the present dreary drabs.
OK Oba was always good and Owen has come on song. I need more convincing about some of those getting the plaudits now. We know who those not good enough for next season are. Let’s get on with being safe and then see who KK really wants in the side. Fickle and poor memories will not do anybody any good.

No matter who said this even if it was shearer, owen or martins there would have been the same reaction. He needed to play there as we didnt have enough players. And the reason he wasnt playing was cause he was playing terrible!

Are we willing the give the players the same chance and patience as KK?

So, if the players fail to perform for one whole season, we should condemn them as long as they wear the shirt?

Stop helping the press by attacking our own players. The manager will decide who warrants a place in the squad and who’s not.

Gareth is spot on – even now, after that wonderful win, we’re doing exactly what we’ve become ridiculed for: bouncing from extreme to extreme based on one or two good or bad performances. Someone like KK knows that it takes a whole season to judge a player – and we should learn the same.

Some of you are still at it on this thread – you just can’t resist calling for the head of some player or other based on a couple of imperfect performances! And at the other end, Ed – we have played 3 good games. Let’s not get too excited!

This pathetic habit of slamming players or demanding their knighthoods depending on their last performance just makes it worse for the players and makes us collectively look stupid.

And here’s another rant about a stupid thing that keeps coming up on these threads:
People need to learn that the size of your pay cheque does not counteract your basic psychology! All top-end sportsmen will have good periods and bad, and will be heavily influenced by the manager, supporters and press. If anything, these top-end people, as in any profession, are far more emotionally delicate than the rest of us. All this “for £40k a week he should…” is just jealousy mixed with frustration.

    And it’s utter bollocks.

Never wanted Sam and glad to see he left but the only thing it’s impossible to knock is his transfer activity. For the money spent we have had great value and his buys especially in defense with the two full backs in particular excelling, are top draw. So to Sam wherever he is thanks for getting at least that part right.
