Man City’s £5M-rated captain Richard Dunne is reportedly wanted by Newcastle United.
Richard Dunne – could Keegan entice him to Newcastle?
We had thought earlier in the season that Dunne may be a good acquisition for Newcastle since he’s been playing really well over the last three seasons at Manchester
The defender’s contract talks on hold at Eastlands and we’re not sure if there’s a problem there or whether the contract will simply be sorted out in the summer.
But Dunne is a proven Premiership player and could fit right into Newcastle central defensive position and give us some stability.
Dunne is a key player under new City manager Sven Goran Eriksson and the Swede wants to get his first Premier League season behind him before dealing with player negotiations.
Eriksson told the Manchester City web site today:
“He has a contract for one more year so it is not a pressing problem. We don’t want to lose him and I am quite sure he wants to stay here”
Keegan knows all about the Republic of Ireland star Dunne since he managed Dunne while at City. At that time Dunne was not the dedicated professional he has become but Kevin put him on the right track.
Newcastle’s defense has again been a problem this season and Keegan’s first priority in the summer is to improve the defense with the acquisition of a left back and a center-back.
What do you think?
Comments very welcome.

Comment #1He is good but I can’t see how he can improve our defence. Defending is not a one person job, it’s a team effort. But, if a person can add extra 10% to each player beside him, then get him.

Comment #3He’s a commander at the back, and maybe Taylor can learn a few things from him. Although I would prefer big Sol instead, use him like Liverpool use Hyypia and maybe another really quick defender who can operate at LB too!

Comment #4He’s good but we can do better than that,5 mill pounds is around 7 mill euros.Add 5 more we could get Garay who imo is gonna be world class in few years.
I never thought i will say this but i think that we should sell Taylor in the summer if we wanna be top 4 again, replacement for him….Gonzalo Rodriguez.
Also it wouldnt be bad if we go for Popov from Auxerre as Beye’s back up considering the fact that Carr’s leaving in the summer.

Comment #6Waste salary! He’s not the man for us to improve our squad next year. I will so upset if we get him in summer. He will be next Rozenahl, High salary but no passion in game anymore.

Comment #7Leo…You can even bring Stam as his personal defensive coach he would still be the same.
He’s just so unreliable

Comment #8Theres isnt a chance we will sell Taylor and this speculating is pointless as we are probably all miles off KKs real targets.

Comment #9if we are going to be attakking a lot we’ll generally high quite a high defensive line, if this is the case he might be trouble for pace on the counter attack
Campbell is apparantly still on over £100,000 a week at portsmouth

Comment #15Dunne has remained Man City’s top defender in a period when they have added a lot of talent to their squad. Eriksson knows his defenders and is a big fan and obviously Keegan has faith in Dunne since his own days at City.
I’d be delighted if we signed Dunne. He’s a top player and has a professional attitude. He would rival Taylor for a starting place and give us another defender as strong as Faye.
A great buy.

Comment #17lol but boumsong was a clown everywhere,i dont mean in the scottish league,i mean in every european match he has played in,rangers have a great defense at present and teams like werder bremen, panathinaikos, even barca struggled and hes at the centre of the reason why!im just givin my opinion on an option and at present he looks a good option!

Comment #18cant see dunne leaving City, hes a big player playing for a wonderful club he must surely love. i like the blue mancs and tbh they have a recent record of good performances that exceeds ours. keegan could prolly point bin laden to christianity though.. so who the foosh knows. he would improve any defence in the world though. he is excellent. id be happy for tailor to sit one out occasionally for him. though tbh id play tailor ahead due to him being one of our own. bring in players, stick em on the bench and tell those on the field this is whats behind you, do a job or you aint running out to start. damn i cant wait for the silverware caused party we surely will have sometime soon.. see you there, bring a bottle.

Comment #21Never have i read so much shoite!
Who would you moaning minnies rather have? Richard Dunne or Ca-sapper? Nuff said!!!
Ship in Dunne; he would be a top addition to our defense. Hard as nails; steady head, good positional play.
He is no featherweight comedian. I’d rather have Richard Dunne than £20m bling boy Micah Richards.
Dunne is better value and still good value even if he weighs in at £7m.
Ship him in.

Comment #22i would like to see a settled defensive unit, how about a player who is comfortable to play or be played at left back but is primaraly a centre back
that way we have cover for left back but Enrique will not be demoted to second choice, who to sign i a m not sure on, but there are players who can play centre back and fullback, some are more willing than others
Carragher, Gallas, Chiellini, Brown, Lescott, Puyol, Cordoba, Richards, Chivu, Silvestre
The players i mention are not all viable targets, and half play on the right not left but are mentioned to support my point, a decent left sided
centre back (preferably left footed) could cover both positions
who we could sign is not as clear but its what i would look to do

Comment #23Craigg…Was Owen a realistic target before we signed him?!
M O N E Y T A L K S
Just pay attention on one thing this summer.
If Valencia don’t win the Kings cup that means no Europe for them next season. You will still see big name signings eventhough they wont be offering them european football.
If we can convince Garay that we’re aiming for the top 4 position and that we want to make 5 more top class signatures i’m sure he’ll join our club.

Comment #25heron mag, faye is not a good defender. he needs to be replaced. he may be strong and physical but that’s abot it!
Against birmingham Mcfadden took the piss out of him for the entire first half! No disrespect to mcfadden but there’s much better players in the PL than him! They’d have a field day against faye!

Comment #26Just had to write how impressed I have been with KK’s team management. Truly brilliant to play Owen deeper and keep Viduka and martins upfront. Also I would never have guessed we could score 4 goals away from home without wingers Zog or Milner (both were on my nailed on starting 11). I think KK will teach the team to play the ball quicker up front with Viduka and Martins giving good outlets. Will be very interesting to see if this can work when we face teams at home who come and pack the midfield – wait to see reading put 5 in the midfield.
Last point is I feel sure KK is going to educate Martins and get him to perform like Andy Cole. In the Spurs match KK told Martins not to pass and get his shooting boots on – guess what he scored a goal.
Feel my most optimistic for our future for about 4 years.
PS. Richards and not Dunne from man City please.

Comment #28No to Dunne, City are not exactly brilliant at present and I agree with the sentiments there are better younger players. Cris or Cambiasso, perhaps. Long shots but as someone else said available at the right price. How about Viera he is not getting first team football at present. There is also a young lad called Edgar who might be worth going for.

Comment #30Well it isn’t the first time you rubbished my suggestions Tom-Toon then later changed your mind.
As Hadji said earlier Owen wasn’t on our radar till we got him, so anything is possible. Don’t forget KK was looking at Henry. Rule nothing out in the footy world.

Comment #31Yes but Henry, isnt happy at Barca and Owen was an english man, past his best wanting to move back to england.
While Cambiasso is a regular in the inter and argentna team who is partly italian and at his peak.
And i wouldnt touch Viera with a barge pole, he has been so crap recently.

Comment #32he is exacly wot we need but he has no reason to leave man city n man city hav no reason to sell him so why would he leave but he is just wot we miss he would make such a differece offer 10m for him and 80 000 a week i say see if that will entice him cause hes well worth it

Comment #34For me the perfect buy is Daniel Van Buyten (Ex Man City under Keegan) of Bayern Munich. He hasn’t been starting too regularly and is at his peak. He was awesome for City when he was there and has never ceased to impress me every time I’ve seen him play.

Comment #35to answer your headline question id have to say .. no
just because city are well ahed of us in terms of league position and progress at the moment and id find it very strange if he was to jump ship to a premier league team lower down the league. would be a brilliant signing though have to admit and especially if we can get him on a free but cant see it myself 🙁

Comment #37You never know ScottyT. The idea of taking part in the new Keegan revolution (with the amount of money that could be getting invested) is extremely enticing to most players.
Hadji is right. Money talks. More importantly though, Keegan’s personal charisma is going to play a very, very important role over the next year. We’ll soon see how many big players want to sign up for the Toon Revival!

Comment #38Probably cos he isn’t getting first team football, and he isn’t long back from a bad injury. Still think he would be a better buy than Dunne.
Also lets face it most of the suggestions made on this blog are non starters for us at present. 🙁

Comment #39yh a spose that could be a factor but we’re defo going to need keegan to use his persuasion to get players to come. however we also dont want people coming just for the money they need to know what playing for the toon really means and need to be committed to our cause.
hopefully the fans, the idea of playing in keegans attacking style and the money they may earn will attract some top players who we desperately need to replace the obvious ones who should be moving out.
