Here’s Four Players For Newcastle In The Summer

April 4th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 144 Comments

Kevin Keegan says that he needs probably just four new players to round out his squad.

andrei-srshavin.jpg

Andrei Arshavin - Russian captain would be great acquisition

Although we’re not yet safe from relegation we’ll allow ourselves today to look forward to who those players may be that are added to our squad in the summer.

If there are going to be four new players we think they will be a center-back, left back, midfield player and striker.

So let’s have a look at who’s available in each position and who would be the best one to bring in. We of course need your input on this and maybe Kevin can get a few tips from you. :D

For left back there seem to be a number of very good and experienced PL players available that will fight it out with Jose Enrique next season.

Wayne Bridge, Nicky Shorey and John Arne Riise are three we have already been linked with.

wayne-bridge-q.jpg

Wayne Bridge of Chelsea

We would plump for Wayne Bridge. We’ve wanted Bridge at Newcastle for some time now and Bobby Robson had an £8M bid for him turned down when he was still at Southampton. We could probably get him for around £5M. So that’s one down and three to go.

For center-back there are a number of players who seem available.

Bayern Munich’s 6′ 5″ Daniel Van Buyton and Richard Dunne both played for Kevin while he was manager at Manchester City and there seems big support for Vincent Kompany, the 6’3”Belgian center-back currently playing for Hamburg. Vincent turns 22 next week. Also Wes Brown of Manchester United is available as a free agent, and has lots of good experience.

wes-brown-1212.jpg

Wes Brown of Manchester United

Of these we’d have to bring in Wes Brown, just because he’s a free agent and a proven Premier league player, but we also like Kompany a lot.

As far as midfield is concerned there are some good players, but we’re not at all sure who we could actually get. We’ve been linked with Wallsend local boy Michael Carrick of Manchester United and the former Arsenal star Jose Reye has also been mentioned as a possible capture.

We’ve also been linked with Deco of Barcelona and a popular choice would be Russian captain Andrei Arshavin. We’d love it if we can get Carrick but failing that we’d be very happy with Andrei Arshavin, who looks an excellent player. We think around £8M will get him.

We’ve been linked with many strikers. Dean Ashton, Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Dirk Kuyt, Australian Scott MacDonald, Mauro Zarate, currently on loan at Birmingham. Javier Saviola of Real Madrid and Eidur Gudjohnsen of Barcelona are another two we have been linked with. There’s a lot of very good strikers available there.

mauro-zarate.jpg

Mauro Zarate on loan at Birmingham City from Al-Sadd

Of those we’d be happy with Darren Bent or 21 year-old Mauro Zarate, who seems to be proving he can score goals in the Premier league for Birmingham City. We’ll go for Maur0 Zarate, and it looks like we may have a chance with the player since Birmingham might find it hard to pay £10M for him.

So that’s our fairly quick pick and yes we know, we’ve missed out a few others who we could bring in.

We think Carr, Rozehnal, Ameobi and probably Ramage are on their way out and we’d replace them with Bridge, Brown, Arshavin and Zarate.

They would cost around £22M but we’d probably be able to get £5M for Ramage and Ameobi, so that’s a net outlay of around £18M, which doesn’t seem too bad. We can certainly afford that and the squad will be vastly improved.

Let’s know what you would do in the summer.

Comments very welcome.

    Arshavin defintely.
Alex of Chelsea for CB nd i think we need a RB more as we have Edgar for cover.
    Seitaridis for RB.
    Blaszczykowski as a winger.
A big, strong but pacey striker like Cisse.
And maybe even a DM like Tymoschuk.

  • 2 gonufc // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:32

What about Diego of Werder Bremen? We were linked with him for a while in the summer and although unlikely we should definately try for him. Also, please not Wes Brown, i think he looks alright with great players around him, but he is almost always the weak link in the Man u defence, much rather go for someone else, even if they are a gamble like Kompany.

  • 3 Faustino // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:32

Personally I’d prefer Shorey and Van Buyten to Bridge and Brown.

Bridge hasn’t been consistent in any sense for so long now and I really don’t rate him [I also perosnally blame him for england losing to Croatia.] Brown as good as his form may be at the moment, [Fergie is consistently picking him at the mo.] I just don’t see him as the player we need to bolster defenses.

Plus, with both of these players come the stigma of playing for one of the ‘top 3′ clubs and the ‘taking a step down’ attitude that it hsa taken Butt 3 years to get over and something I beleive has affected Smith. I really believe these players would see coming to SJP as semi-retirement.

Agree about Arshavin but still with me the juries out about what, if any kind of striker we will need to buy. If the front 3 carry on the way they are and Carrol continues to come of the bench and gain experience I think it could be counter proudctive for KK to do the obvious NUFC trick and buy a new possible superstar striker. It may un balance all the good work he’s done with Martins, Owen and Viduka.

£5million for Ramage and Shola ahahahahhahahahahahaaha…!

  • 5 nightfall // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:37

    dunne/garay
    vieira/carrick
    nasri/ribery
    gomis/berbatov/luis fabiano

  • 6 Ian_McP // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:37

    In my opinion:-
Arshavin - absolutely YES, but does he speak good english? I can’t imagine very good russian being spoken around the training ground atm.
Brown - yes, good experience, apart from only joining for the money.
Bridge - YES, like his play alot
Not too sure about zararte, tbh I haven’t seen that much of him. I would prefer Gomis or Bent. I also think Heskey and Sibierski would be two very strong and relatively cheap additions.

  • 7 Jimmie // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:41

If Keegan get £50 mil as some rumour says, I would rather see Keegan go for Diego from Werder Bremen, Van der Vaart and Kompany from Hamburg, Elmander from Toulouse and maybe Bridge as competition for Enriques leftback spot

  • 8 Knightbobmoncur // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:42

if indeed we did for the sake of argument purchase the players mentioned by ed, and sell the players mentioned by ed, this would mean 4 in 4 out. Wasnt it KK who stated when he arrived that he was very surprised by the small size of his squad ?? We would need at least another 2 players if we got rid of four i am reckoning.
I think it is also questionable whether the likes of Viduka, Smith and Duff will be at the club come september!!

I think KK is just hedging his bets currently, not trying to get people to excited whilst not denting the confidence of his current squad.

I expect ALOT of changes in the summer, not just 4!!!!!!!

  • 9 HeronMag // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:43

Can’t agree with some of your choices Ed. Bridge is a top player, no questions. Brown has never impressed me as much as Van Buyten did at City and Zarate looks good but doesn’t have the power of Gomis. We need some punch up front to replace an ageing Viduka. I haven’t seen enough of Arshavin to judge.

Saying that the toon always welcome’s new players with open arms so I’d give them all support, whoever we sign.

  • 10 JR // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:48

Does this website endorse Arshavin or something? This is about the 4th time he’s been at the top of one of these lists. You might as well have just used the same list you used last summer, or winter. Someone’s been playing football manager a bit too much.

  • 11 Kieran hatten // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:53

Arshavin- IF we could buy this player i strongly recommend him…. after watching his performance against Leuverkuesn i think he would slot in just nicely and looks like a great player for attacking style football….. did anyone watch the rangers game last night.. Keegan and McDermott were present anybody have a monkeys who they were scouting? possibly Barry Ferguson?

  • 12 ginkoh // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:54

Brown is so average player. He look good because he is in Champion team. i can see player who same standard as him even in lower division.

  • 13 ObaFan2 // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:54

I don’t get it with Wes Brown, he’s the worst player in an excellent team but somehow he played for England too……….. mind you so did Smith!!!!!!!!!!

    Arshavin yes
Bridge yes maybe but I like Enrique as no.1 LB
Zarate is highly rated by many.

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 10:55

Kieran it was Carlos Cuellar he was scouting.

  • 15 Kash // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:00

To be honest, I think Duff maybe leaving in the summer too but not sure about N’Zogbia. Either way we would need a couple more wingers. Possibly Diouf and someone else maybe McGeady? But I agree with the players you’ve mentioned Ed apart from Zarate, and these players will be in addition.

The striker we should sign is Cardozo of Benfica. Completeyly the perfect player to play alongside any of Martins, Owen or Viduka or even on his own. Would be a handful for any defence!

  • 16 Zx // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:01

    Zarate is overpriced…overhyped…and probably over-rated.

Whatever you guys are saying are just fantasy talk.

In the end, who does the scouting?

    Who makes the recommendations?

And finally who makes the decision?

    Don’t get carried away.

  • 17 joel // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:02

sorry ed harrison but may i surgest people who we have been offfically been in contact with and is most likely (i was on my internet yesterday for 4 hours) these are the most likley players

Batefimbi Gomis (number one target-next Drobga.)

Luis Fabiano (offically on sites-linked with wise and ect.)

Aaron Lennon (in lost of papers)

Jose Antonio Reyes (sky sports )

So ed harrison can your make a new blog about these people. Please Please

  • 18 NUFCFAN // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:07

i honestly believe that the striker would need to be something pretty special as like mentioned earlier it will counter productive to Andy Carrol - who seems to be doing well for England.

So i would prefer to buy more and more young players, strikers, playermakers and loan them out.

but in terms of centre backs do like the idea of kompany big and skillful - however hasnt keegan just stated that the problem was the lack of cohesion i.e the language barrier.

same as the russian guy - seems great but dont know much about him, and is there nobody else. am not a fan of signing deco - too old and too much money - its got to be players needing to turn their career around or up and coming.

to turn this club around means that we need to stop the big last paycheck and bring in the hungry youth, or europeans looking to prove themselves

  • 19 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:08

Kash - Cardozo isnt ready yet. Trust me Benfica is my second team. When he came we thought he’d be great and it was said he’d be a great fox n the box, but he hasnt been.

  • 20 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:09

We dont want Deco either, he has been shocking for Portugal lately.

  • 21 NUFCFAN // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:11

we should use that sevilla link

deigo capel - get rid of duff then there is too young players on the left who attack players, nzogbia and capel. - sell duff to sunderland for there Irish continjent. Would still get 5 mill and he’s not the same player

bring in bentley to compete with milner

fabiano would probaly be like the old tino - but where does this put the current formation?

  • 22 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:13

Fabiano like the old Tino? fabiano is lazy.

No chance in Capel or probably Bentley.

    Blazsczykowski all the wsy.

  • 23 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:14

no deco, no cardoz, i havent seen gomis and im sure not many others have, everyone is just going by he has been labbled the next drogba. remember a lad called neil mellor?? he was labelled the new rooney haha

  • 24 Michael // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:14

With the sudden upturn in performance, if we can win some more games in a similar fashion as we have the last two, something tells me a bit os inexperience from Ashley may rear it’s ugly head and he may well decide he does not really have to splash the cash any more.

Consider, the fans are frustrated, you have played your Joker card and bought time with Keegan. How now to ease the tensions from the fans but to tacitly suggest a war chest of £50million in the summer. He knows very well that if Keegan can get this team playing top 10 football next season, he will not release 50Million and he will start talking about taking time to build Rome. Business people are excesively savy at saving face in the glare of bad times and taking it back in that of good times or rather better times.

To be concise, I cannot see Ashley providing 50 million with out Keegan having to sell massively. Mabey about £15 -20 million and the rest will need to come from selling the likes of Milner £8 - 10, Duff £ 7 , Martins £ 12-15

  • 25 Dragoner // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:15

first of all zarate will cost around 15mill not 10, secondly, we can do much better than Brown and Bridge

  • 26 Dragoner // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:16

Also, we have not chance of diego, werder bremen want to keep him, plus arsenal are interested

  • 27 Loonytoon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:19

some of the names mentioned above are quality signings who would improve the team while also adding depth to the squad…what we are failing to remember is that we have some extremely talented youngsters that have been brought to the club..I went to watch the reserves on Monday at St James and was extremely impressed with what was on show…
Lua Lua : up against Gary Neville..now the Manc moaner has been out a while however he is still a quality defender…Lua Lua left him on his backside on more than one occasion..
Carroll : Handful as per…Good backup for Viduka if we are to play 4.3.3 more often than not.great in the air and has a crackinmg left foot.
Baheng : Bit rough round the edges but loads of potential. Pace, trickery and good movement very evident.
Kadar : Played left back and looked very good on the ball. tall, good in the tackle, sent Manure right winger for a pie with a lovely shimmy.
Tozer : plyed centre half and never looked in trouble at any time…tall and quick..defo one for the not too distant future…
Zamblera : didnt get on but for a teenager he has the physique to compete in the prem…watched him at half time ping shot after shot from 30 yards plus into the gallowgate net…and he wasnt tapping them either!!!!!
Godsmark: didnt play on Mon but from what I have seen of the little fella, he is an outstanding talent. One of the quickest players I have witnessed but he also has a finish in his locker…can play wide right or upfront and has just been rewarded with a pro contract..defo one for the near future…
Take the boyos mentioned above and add a touch of experience to the squad and we are l;ooking good to challenge for phase 1 which is top 6… For me I would add Wes Brown or Sol Cambell (Massive amounts of experience and as long as he has pace to cover around him he will be fine) as cb’s
Carrick (The boy showed on Tuesday in Rome what a top player he is…anyone unsure of the boy, watch a re run of the game and watch the way he dictates the play)
Riise ( He can play full back or left mid and is a cracking player)
Gomis (pace, strength, finish, good in the air, powerful…take Drogba and minus 5 years )

I am sure people have their own take on who kk should bring in…What is for certain is that whoever we bring in will be quality and ensure exciting times ahead….howay the lads :)

  • 28 Loonytoon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:25

Michael : Get back on that mackem site you have just come off….15 to 20 million???????????????????????????????? we have no debt therefore 30 mill tv coin…season tickets another 30 million…prize money from this years prem finish…..merchandise…blah blah blah….You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned savvy…do you hear man u saying how much they have to spend? no cos when a club states that the price of players go up accordingly…if Keegan want a player, Mr Ashley will spend accordingly to get him….Only stupidly daft clubs let the press know how much they have to spend…anyone see Roy Keanes interview earlier in the week??? nuff said…

  • 29 Hammy // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:26

Ashley is not dumb…..everyone scoffed at Real Madrid going for Beckham yet they recouped the entire transfer fee from merchandising alone.

A team not winning = no shirt sales, little match day revenue and half empty grounds for cup matches.
A winning team = shirt sales, increased matchday turnover and full grounds for every game.

No. 1 business rule. You have to speculate to accumulate.

Expect to see the colour of Ashley’s bucks come the summer….

    tom toon

    wasnt tino lazy?!!

  • 31 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:30

Spose, but i mean that in a sense Fabiano wont take on people like Tino. Fabiano is direct.

  • 32 Eric // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:31

Interesting choices. We are supposedly considering four. That means we need a list of eight. Thus: Riise/Bridge: Kompany/Van Buyten: Carrick/Arshavin: Gomis/Zarate. Van Buyten will be about 31 next season. The others are younger though Bridge will be about 29. We need a balance between our developing youngsters and the older players we have got and may keep.

  • 33 NUFCFAN // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:33

are you saying that you wouldnt take him on then?

  • 34 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:34

Riise, id rather wnk off a dog.

  • 35 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:35

NUFCFAN - Fabiano is a flop waiting to happen.

  • 36 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:35

even if tino was lazy, he could walk around a pitch and still beat every single defender, he was class!!

  • 37 Ross // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:37

i hope KK was looking at cuellar at the rangers game last night, and not any other outfield players.
i’m sure some of them are quite good, but theyre not the most attacking team in the world are they.
they’re like us under fat sam..just..a little less attacking.

  • 38 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:38

i like fabiano alot this season, but he is 27 getting older, mAybe could be a flop, butttttt at 11 million, that is abit of a snip. if he is bad, im sure the merchandising value of him is still great.

my cousin lives in seville and says he is not much liked around there though, they all think he is arrogant, abit like kieron “serious injury every year” dyer

  • 39 NUFCFAN // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:39

who would be your choice of players then

  • 40 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:42

  • 42 NUFCFAN // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:44

do you actually know these players or is it champo?

  • 43 Michael // Apr 4, 2008 at 11:46

@LoonyToon. Both the former and the latter paert of your name ref;ect your thinking, or rather lack thereof.

Now the objective of a business is to maximise shareholder wealth at any expense within legal and ethical bounderies.

You may say Newcastle does not have shareholders although that is not entirely true. A shareholder by definition is an owner of a company and thus the Ashley family are shareholders perhaps not obviously. He did not make his millions by chance but due to a savvy approach to business. His money is finite and thus he must ensure the safety of its volume and increase it.

No doubt there are many ways to do this, but in a global market gone mad in recent months, if you have not been readung the News or are oblivious to what is termed the credit crunch, there is no way Newcastle can afford £50Mill wihout Borrowing or selling. If no one is willing to lend to clubs that have are always seemingly in debt, then 50 million save selling is not going to happen.

This has been a bad season and even if we go on to win all remaining games, it has been a bad season both for Newcastle and For Ashley if the press is right. We spent based on a push for Europe last season and are languishing in the bottom half, Ashley is highly in experienced and will not allow any bold aspirations to turn to rashness.

He has a level head and knows that he comes first before Newcastle. He will not buy expensives chips and have Keegan gamble them or anyone for that matter.

It is the reason why big managers command greater budgets than smaller managers. Look at Roeder’ budget compared to other Newcastle managers.

You bank on trust and how much faith you have in a manager and Keegan having been brought in to shut the fans up. No doubt Ashley will not fund him as heavily as suggestions may predict.

Sorry dude, that is just how it is.

Tymoschuk played last night and was brilliant in the world cup.

The only unknown is Blazsczykowski but ive seen him a few times this season and he has been top.

    little video of him.

  • 46 Michael // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:01

@ Geordie Gerrard: You call me a Mackem when your alias suggests, it is you who is a nomadic fan.

I am stating fact, not the idea that Ashley will not fund Keegan £50mill but on how the pricipals and concepts of business work. I am by no means saying it is fact Ashley will not Fund Keegan, but that considering the remarks I made in my above narrative, one must consider possibilities and the thinking behind the decisons made, why they are made and how they are made. Newcastle is not the world for these people as it is for you. They are many other considerations other than the need to entertain “no very thinking Geordies” like Geordie Gerrad, no?

  • 47 darren mills // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:02

Think Ashraim would be agreat signing.
    Would get rid of
    Carr
    Cacapa
    Rozenthal
    Smith
    Duff
    Ameobi

    Would bring in

    Bridge
    Dunne/Van Buyten
    Ashraim/Diego
    Gomis

Gomis could be great in a few years, could learn alot off Viduka and owen, when Viduka is injured which is alot we can use Gomis or Carroll with Owen and Martins.

    Team would be

    Harper/Given
    Beye - Dunne - Taylor - Bridge
    Ashraim - Butt - Barton
    Owen - Viduka - Martins

    Subs - Harper-Faye-Enrique-N-Zogbia-Milner-Carroll-Gomis

Maybe another defensive midfielder as well, would have a great attacking lineup With Ashraim-Owen-Viduka -Martins

    What do you think

  • 48 Bosck // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:16

michael, mike ashley runs plenty of other money making businesses. he has said many times his aim with newcastle is to create a side that can challenge for honours, will try to beat anyone, and will display attacking entertaining football. if he was in it for the money theres no way he would just clear 110 million pounds worth of debt that he hadnt been expecting, but would have sold up and shipped out instead.

ashley makes his money elsewhere, he is here to bring success to newcastle, so will buy when asked to by keegan as long as the price is right. obviously at the same time he wont spend stupidly for the sake of spending like many of chelsea’s past purchases. but in the long run success breeds profit anyway.

it is clear you dont like mike ashley from previous posts that you have made, but don’t try to make him out as someone who is simply using the club as a cash cow and taking us for a ride.

    That was Freddy Shepherd.

    @Loonytoon @Geordie Gerrard7 @Bosck:

Don’t even bite to Michael. he is a troll. His last technique was to continually have a go at Keegan. Now that is getting no support he has changed tack. I have come across his type so many times - trying to put down people through the use of language (read it carefully - it is utter tosh rarely consistent, and not very good at putting forward an coherent argument)

He will leave this board one day. But only when people stop feeding the troll :0)

Some people get their kicks in a very strange way

  • 53 Loonytoon // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:33

It will be tough to sign Carrick Tom as he is playing for maybe the best side in Europe at the minute…on the other hand, if Manchester sign another midfielder in the summer then he could be available…in my very humble opinion he would love to come home and play a part of POSSIBLY bringing success to Newcastle…fingers crossed he does as he would be a massive plus..

  • 56 Michael // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:41

Many thanks Rob Kirton:- Look we all have opinions and I am not afraid to back down as I have done so in the past when a fesible argument has been brought forward. I am big enough to do.

In the Blog Keegan really is the Messiah, I have stated that my opinion about him can change, it is flexible. I argued he could not crack it in the league but if he does crack the premier league then I have no choice but to retract.

I have conceeded debates on this very forum to superior arguments. I have not seen any of the others with whom I debate ever doing so. I am nt a biggot at all, I do not impose my views on anyone, I bring in argument for you to think on, and perhaps it may change your views if not then you bring a counter argument, to see if it may change my views. It is a simple debate process.

KK is renowned for getting the best out of players…whoever we sign, we MUST get behind them as a individual, as part of our team therefore in the process making them feel wanted….players are a bit like women…the better you treat them, the better they perform ;) ….too many supporters slag players off b4 they come and if/when they arrive get on there backs way too quickly to prove their own opinion was originally correct…

  • 58 Vitorbarbosa // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:50

I like Shorey more than Brigde. At least he is not so injury prone and appear to be a real star. It’s not fair for enrique as I think he deserve a starting position but if we can provide this type of competition in every department, we will move forward faster.

Ed, I don’t actually like any of the strikers mentioned. KK always get the well known, proven striker in the premiership. I don’t know who he will go for but if we going to play with 3 up front, we are in real shortage. Viduka is good but I think we should find a replacement for his place. A genuine starter.

Midfield, I’m not sure who can play in 3 men midfield formation. We must understand, we cannot afford players who good in attacking but poor in defending in this formation. I think this is the reason why N’Zogbia is not playing much as he appear too offensive minded.

Brown will not improve our defence. We need a leader and I can’t see he is one.

  • 59 ronaldeano // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:53

Do u rate Keegan now Michael?!!!! :)

Its nice to see the fickle ones start to see what KK is trying to do with this club, ie, play tremendous football like we used to do!

  • 60 Dirk // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:55

Arshavin - definately, this man is pure class and really drives a team forward into attacking, excellent passing and shooting and so much flair.
Wes Brown - i hate him so much its unbelievable and i think he is manures worst player, BUT if he was as bad as we all think would ferguson have him in his side? and he is on a free and has loads of experience which i think we lack in defence.
carrick - yes must try to get him, i cant see him leaving to come to us though.
Gomis - very good striker, with some experienced strikers next to him will be the next drogba.
as for defenders i think we should go for cuellar, dunne and riise. i no not many ppl lik riise but he can still defend pretty well and provides cover throughout our left side. personally i think riise could b a good holding midfielder?

  • 61 ronaldeano // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:56

    As for new players….

Arshavin, Dunne, Kompany, diego and it would be VERY nice if we could get Zlatan Ibrahimovitch! but i doubt we would get him!! :)

  • 62 Leo // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:56

i love these articles they are propa bo

shorey- i would pick bridge but i dont want

    enriques career held back

brown- hes free so get him in as a squad player if we can also get kompany

kompany (what the hell lets float the boat out)

carrick- local lad holds the midfield well and did anyone mention- hes awesome

arshavin- obvious why, he is fast and has a shot on him, plus would be able to adapt to the local climate easier than most

  • 63 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Apr 4, 2008 at 12:58

We have no chance in signing quality EPL players as we are not in Europe at the moment. We will have to look abroad and I would go for:

Arshavin, Cisse, Diego, Gudjonnson, Deco or something similar to that.

From the EPL I would like to see Sibierski back as he is a decent player and never gives any trouble, he could be a great squad player. I don’t like Wes Brown one bit!..the guy is over-rated and is full of himself. Always makes mistakes and is the weakest link in ManUre and England. I like Bridge a lot but this guy has been happy to sit on the bench for Chelsea for years now and is happily getting his salary. Too greedy to be at Newcastle in my opinion and I believe we could do better. I like Enrique as our first choice LB anyway, and we also have youngsters that could do a job there e.g. Edgar.

  • 64 Dirk // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:03

    @ tom_toon
i heard that Błaszczykowski can play in defence at right back as well? is this true? if so i agree in signing him ive watched him a few times and he is excellent very quick and skillful.

  • 65 HeronMag // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:06

GeordieGerrard7 - I watched Gomis on youtube. He looks awesome! Definitely one to give a try in the prem.

  • 66 sas1 // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:06

Why does everyone mention Diego? He is too good, has every big team in Europe looking at him, he has Champions League football for the rest of his career if he wants it, why would anyone think he would sign for us?

  • 67 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:06

Ye, he fkin strong for a small guy, he barely ever gets knocked off the ball, he prefers right wing but can also play rb as n emergency.

  • 68 HeronMag // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:10

Błaszczykowski looks good Tom Toon. Good call!

  • 69 Eric // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:15

I do not really rate Brown for the reasons JP gives and a European place determines if a player wants to come to NUFC. KK must find quality players who WANT to play for NUFC. Bridge will not for JP’s reasons but I think Arshavin could be got (he will not mind playing in the cold) but feel Carrick (despite his roots) is preferring to be a Manky U glory boy. Wish he would swap his tomato sauce shirt for his home town stripes though. Reckon van Buyten could add some solidity and loads of experience to the defence. If KK only needs 4 to round out his squad it narrows down the number who may leave. It will be Roz and Shola (obvious now), possibly Carr, and Zog if the lights of London still blind him to a good future on the Tyne. So it looks like those suggested to go by some of us will now be staying and be “rounded”.

  • 70 micepie // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:15

I think it can be simple when it comes to buying a striker. The system we are currently playing, with Owen as a link-up, attacking midfielder-cum-striker works well so (assuming we can keep Owen) we should look to buy someone else who can play the same role lest Michael get injured or needs a rest. That would mean signing someone good for the team but not necessarily an expensive or glamourous signing (someone who will tolerate playing understudy for now – someone young and upcoming, ideally, but a little more mature than our youngsters).

Hopefully Martins will stay fit too!

  • 71 Leo // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:21

    @ michael

you know what you said about the whole credit crunch and that ashley would be tight with the purse strings, you could look at that the other direction, newcastle as a club does not have any debt thanks to big mike, alot of club in the world even big clubs like manchester united have huge debts which are obviously offset by great assets, if the credit crunch was going to affect any club it more than likely would be beneficial because clubs will be feeling the noose tightening therefore maybe forced to sell some of their players, which is where we can benefit. your arguement was valid but there is always two sides to a coin (oh no a cliche haha, sorry lads and lasses)

  • 72 chuck // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:26

    given/harper
    beye/brown bridge/Enrique
    Kompany/Taylor/Dunne
    Arshevin/Milner N`zogbia/McGeady
    Bent/Owen Gomis/Martins
    Duff
    Barton
    Faye
    Sorry Butt-Emre-and the rest,outta here!
Then give the youngbloods a chance.
Sure unlikely to see all of the above ,its just a wish list.

  • 73 TER // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:32

    McGeady, Zarate, Arshevin, Kompany

  • 74 CRAIGG // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:32

I think Brown would be joining for the wrong reasons like most of the losers we signed in the last 10 years.

    Not to play in Europe
Not to get in the England Side
Not to be more regular starter
Not because of love or admiration for our club

    JUST FOR MONEY

    IN:

    Michael Carrick
    Shaun Wright-Phillips
    Gonzalo Rodriguez
    Aaron Hughes
    Wayne Bridge
    Stephen Hunt
    Djibril Cisse

That is Craiggs final list, I know i change it every other day but these are all realistic and would add depth to the squad. And my outs are the same as usual as i dont change my view on players game to game.

    OUT:

    Stephen Carr
    Alan Smith
    Shola Ameobi
    Peter Ramage
    Cacapa
    Damien Duff
    Geremi

Dont get me wrong i wish it had worked out for Duff and Cacapa because they could have been great if you look at their past careers.

It pains me to say it as i love me local lads but Ramage and Shola aint good enough i love them to pieces but we need better players to cover injuries, If were to get to the next level and we have better youngsters on our books already.

  • 75 Eric // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:33

I hinted a little while back that a little psychology was going on to soften us up. This to get us to accept some players we wanted out but who will be staying. So - Butt, Barton, Smith, Viduka, Duff, etc etc will all be here next season. Keep them plus the “rounding off” incomers and our promising youngsters will be gone by Xmas out of sheer frustration. Get rid of the dead wood - employ s tree-surgeon on a part-time contract in May!

  • 76 CRAIGG // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:38

Michael look at our finances when Shepherd appointed Roeder it was nothing to do with his profile.

He let Souness spend £50m on tripe mostly
Boumsong, Faye, Babayaro, Luque and until recently Owen.

£50m if we had spent that in 2002-2003 when we finished 3rd and got to the last 16 of the Champions league, We could have won the league, Yet Freddy gave Bobby £10m to buy Woodgate in January and nothing in the summer hence Bowyer on a free was all Bobby could bring in.

If i ever see the fat controller, Old tangerine bollocks at SJP again it will be far too soon

  • 77 Dirk // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:38

didnt arshavin state in the january trnasfer window that he would come to newcastle if they wanted him?

  • 78 Whumpie // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:45

I think LooneyToon is right about the overall approach to the team: KK will get just two or three hugely experienced players in key places, and the new youngsters will be the additional depth. Good approach, too.

As for those big players, I’d love to see Shorey and Carrick. Neither looks likely, but you just never know with KK and Wisey working on it. These guys are seriously good at convincing people…

As for the Michael/Looneytoon scrap, I can see both sides - but I’m guessing Looneytoon is right there too, but Michael has a point, so who knows? Ashley made billions selling shirts, and he knows how to do that again by signing a few big names. And let’s not forget that while he intends to make a profit, he also intends to have fun doing so. Expect headlines with very large numbers and very well-known names.

  • 79 Obafan // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:46

Kompany: as Belgian he plays all the time awful when he copmes to play for his nation. I’m not a big fan of him.

Van Buyten: strong type of player, but i think we should aim for a leader at our central defence. Van Buyten is not a leader; he is a good defender but not the one who should lead the defence.

Bridge: lots of injuries and I would prefer a younger alternative; I defo would hear at Standard to go for the Brazilian DANTE (LB who also can cover as CD).

Brown: playing a very good season, so I would say YES

Zarate: it is not because he plays a few good games that he would be a good buy. I would go for a bigger name or a more upcoming talent (Gomis or so)

Arshavin; we should DEFO go after him; he will learn English. I saw him yesterday and he was outstanding!!! He would be a very promosing player in the EPL!! We should go for him now, because after Euro or UEFA cup final (if they reach it) the big teams will also go after him. This is the time to go for him!!!

I also think that KK will go for more than 4 new players; he would at least buy 4 more than the total of players that is released.

  • 80 chuck // Apr 4, 2008 at 13:50

That is a player ive seen a few times nothing do with football manager

Ye except Vahirua is so lightweight, you mentioned him before, i said the same thing.

  • 89 magpie from poland // Apr 4, 2008 at 14:16

    MID - S. Nasri/Matiaz Fernandez/Diego/M. Carrick/Capel/A. Lennon/K. Błaszczykowski/R. Quaresma
    ST - D. Cisse/Arshavin/J. Saviola
…my suggestions. If we will get 5, 6 of them, I’m sure we are in top 4

  • 90 ronaldeano // Apr 4, 2008 at 14:19

    Cisse, Arshavin, bridge maybe

but not Woodgate cos he snubbed us for Spurs!

  • 91 CRAIGG // Apr 4, 2008 at 14:24

Yes i did mention him before and every time i see him he reminds me more and more of Tim Cahill who is mentioned on a dailly basis.

He may be light weight but so are plenty of players who are doing well over here Nani, Pienaar and Ashley Young all look like a gust of wind would knock them over but they all still look the part and this guy may also

  • 98 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 14:35

I’d keep Cacapa, Duff and Geremi as SQUAD players.

Stephen Hunt wouldnt add much, just another squad player.
Wayne Bridge - Nah, rb is more important, Carr is leaving and we’ve got Edgar for LB cover. He’s also injury prone.
    SWP, on the fence.
Djibril Cisse - he deserves another go in the prem, proved his quality on international scene and in france.
Aaron Hughes - Not bothered, doub he’d play much anyway.
Gonzalo Rodriguez - Not seen enough to decide.
Carrick - No chance. Most Man Utd fans think he and Anderson are their best CM’s.

A new young talented player…. in fact he happens to be my Cousin! Carl Reynolds 19 years old and currently is playing in America for a University team…. 19 appearances 10 goals… not bad… ex Chelsea academy… Central midfield….

Okay my views on who should leave tyneside this summer:
    Carr
    Rohezhal
    Ameobi
    Smith
u no im even tempted to say let given go… i can’t believe im saying that as he is my favorite goalie but i think these injuries aren’t going to stop now….
Players i would like to see on the tyne:

    Brown
    Glen Johnson
    Nugent

    NUGENT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? no thanks. Nor Brown.

  • 103 CRAIGG // Apr 4, 2008 at 14:49

Edgar is a right footed CB who had one game at LB and did well. Our main prority should be LB if Enrique gets injured we are stuffed, Bridge would be a good incentive for Enrique to keep up his form and we need to have 2 players for every position.

Man Utd fans might not have much of a choice if Fergie signs Veloso than Carrick will want to leave no doubt, He wont sell Hargreaves, Scholes, Anderson Or Fletcher

Hunt is a good player, scores a few and sets up a few, if Zog leaves we would be stuck with Duff again

SWP is a player that if used properly can be as good as anyone, Can score and create as well as any RMs

Hughes is a good back up for RB, LB and CB and is a useful squad member and free transfer in the summer.

Rodriguez is class youll have to check him out.

Cisse we agreed on, so no arguments.

    OUT
    Ramage
    Rozehnal
    Carr
Taylor (if we get a good offer for him; we should let him go)
    Smith
    Ameobi

    IN
    Dante (LB from Standard)
Arshavin (RW from Zenit St Petersburg)
    Gomis (ST from Saint Etienne)
    Dunne (CD from Man City)
    Edmilson (CDM from Barcelona)

  • 107 akin // Apr 4, 2008 at 15:15

    you lot are idiots

  • 108 Michael // Apr 4, 2008 at 15:19

@ Leo. You are right, for clubs like Manchester united, buying more players would be a challenge considering they are in massive debt. So indeed they may have to sell some to make funds available.

@ Ronaldeno: My opinion is flexible. 2 games in a row is hardly reason for me to be in laudation of Keegan. I have rated his performances highly in the past 2 games and have given him the due credit. Fulham we expected to win, Tottenham was a not expected considering the comfort in which we won but there was always the possibility considering they had nothing for which to play. A cup in the cabinet sometimes does this to teams not used to silverware.

Keegan has no doubt been good and indeed he deserves the credit, but to expect us to hail him messiah after two games is asking for too much. A reputation rebuild would take more than two games against one side of questionable robustness and another still hungover heck drunk from the aptly named “Carling cup”.

@ Craigg. We must be honest here profile influences budget. If a reputable broker approached you and gave a proposition based purely on a gamble, you would more likely give him your life savings or a portion of it to invest then you would a broker who just graduated. Profile bings a certain guarantee. IT is all a gamble you cannot sit back after appointing Keegan and expect that objectives will be met. Look at the appointment of Big Sam at the beginning of the season, expectation was a top six finish, sadly reality did not reflect expectation. These are the risks you make.

Likewise Keegan, When Fat Fred appointed Souness, he perceived souness as someone who could bring success to Newcastle. He then Backed him with 50 million. What happened???? I think we all know. It is a gamble for the chairman with no guarantees.

  • 109 Tom_Toon // Apr 4, 2008 at 15:28

  • 111 Markus // Apr 4, 2008 at 16:04

Dont want any more Chelsea bench players after the last 3 acquisitions from them (same could be said about Man u as well). KK said his squad is small so I think he is going to hang on to Duff, Geremi and Smith (Owen I think will want out to a Champ Lague team) for at least 1 more season each. Zog wants to go to London (shame) and Barton could possibly be in jail. Roz, Ameobi, Ramage and Carr are almost banker replacements. So that means 7 new players by my count at least and how is KK going to get them meshed next season without throwing points away as they settle (look how long it took to change mindsets from Sam A to KK). Still I will be happy with joining the top half teams with an outside UEFA Cup chance as the target for next season with no 6-0 losses away or 1-5 at home. See its easy to please me

  • 112 magpie from poland // Apr 4, 2008 at 16:04

Yes. That is man who we need. So, in our reach is only Quaresma (not next season but further). I don’t know who else. Maybe Mauro Zarate or Lennon. But first we got to finish this season highest we can.

  • 113 nate // Apr 4, 2008 at 16:09

If we could get Carrick we definitely should, but I’m not sure he would come here for next year, besides we have 3 holding mids already (Butt, Barton, Geremi, plus Faye can play there) so not sure we need another one. We might have a better chance on Dunne and he would be good. YES, YES, YES on Arshavin, just the type of player we need. As for strikers, not entirely sure, I don’t rate Cisse, Ashton, or Crouch, Saviola wouldn’t come to us I don’t think, perhaps Gudjohnsen would be good.

if we miss Dyer and/or Solano, Arshavin is the perfect replacement within our reach. Bridge is the best we can have for another LB, more classy than Shorey, vast EPL and int’l experience. should welcome Wes Brown if joining as a free agent. or else how about John Menash - yes another powerful African player, they seem to fit in nicely and love playing for the fans don’t they? Zarate is cool. we need iconic magicians to be a truely classy side. big man + small man is a working formula, but if we can play like Barca-like 433 with 3 pacy skilful creative frontmen (in Owen, Martins, Zarate, Arshavin or even a tranformed Zog if he stays) the big men can stay on the bench until they are called upon. Viduka, Carroll or even Baheng can take this role (while I’d love to see Gomis in the side as well but he may cost 10mil)

For all you people suggestin carrick why would he possibley consider comming to us.. he gets guarenteed european football and plenty of medal winning opportunites at man u so why would he come to us to play in a team which for the time being will struggle to get into europe and do not really have a big chance of winning much! however realistically wayne bridge, wes brown would be good signing both have premiership experince and would bring much needed quality to are lacking defence!

Another thing to add is the people who are sayin we will b getting rid of players like smith, viduka and taylor this is pure stupidity firstly are squad is too small to be getting rid of too many players secondly these 3 are all top quality players, of course alan smith hasnt had the best of season his work rate for the team is incredible! i do believe however we should get rid of carr, shola and either ramage or rozenhal as these players are just not good enough plus if we purchase correctly in the summer we will have plenty of cover for these positions.

Andrei Arshavin was awesome last nite ,, a must buy

  • 122 Andreas // Apr 4, 2008 at 18:51

Michael, I belive you’re wrong when you say “there is no way Newcastle can afford £50Mill wihout Borrowing or selling”. MA got nearly 1 billion pounds (in cash) when he floated Sports Direct. The interest alone on such a sum would mean a cracking transfer kitty (as an example). Sure, MA has most likely a big part of that money is locked in all sorts of investments, but I find it hard to say he can’t affoard funding KK. Moreover, since we’re debt free the upcoming TV-money etc could easily be used for transfers (and that would be around 30ish mill).

However, it’s a completly different story if he/we will spend. I think so, you do not - and that’s cool, we’ll just have to wait and hope.

  • 123 Tom // Apr 4, 2008 at 19:19

anthony vanden borre anyone? solid young defender can play right back or centre back.

  • 124 Jamie G // Apr 4, 2008 at 19:48

People need to stop basing their wish list on a) whos played well the last 3 games e.g zarate. and
    b) who has good stats on championship manager.
We are going to find it very difficult to recruit this summer in my opinion…we are going to be after the same players tottenham, portsmouth, everton, villa will be after, almost all of whom will be able to offer european football. Call me pessimistic but i just think the fans are being naive…hopefully im wrong.

    Re: Kieran Hatten (#100)

Now Shay is finally getting sent for proper surgery to resolve the groin problem once and for all he’ll be fine. The way we’ve keep patching him up and sending him back out after just a few weeks’ rest, has been ridiculous.

Same thing happened when Taylor dislocated his shoulder a few seasons back, an injury that can only be properly fixed with surgery - yet we tried to fix it with rest.

And Ameobi. Running around on a dodgy hip for how long before we finally sent him away? Duff, Carr, Babayaro, Emre always seem to be permanently crocked with the same injuries too.

Our record with injury management has been atrocious - hopefully that changes under Keegan.

i’ve just watched the Leverkusen/Zenit St. Petersburg game…Arshavin had an absolute blinder. Loads of pace on him. I would take him into the side in a heartbeat.

  • 127 Gooderz // Apr 4, 2008 at 21:57

Just been watching a few clips on youtube of BÅ‚aszczykowski. He looks a solid player, and if his defending is at a decent standard then he’d fit right in.

Maybe we should get another mentioned target, Torosidis, in too. With those two and Milner on the books we’d be well stocked on the right hand side for years to come.

But that might be overdoing it a tad.

i play football manager and every time i bought kompany, nigel de jong and heitinga…we should look at this 3 players. kompany would be a good buy and also dunne….

buy another winger also, which can play both left and right (maybe a youngster)

  • 131 SZCZRZŹŻĄĆÓ // Apr 5, 2008 at 7:49

we should get artur boruc from celtic. harper and given are old and have injuries a lot. tim krul? i watched him many times but i dont think so is a goalie for top 4 team. boruc is in 5 top world goalkeepers in opinion of many people. what ya think?

  • 132 Simon Tate // Apr 5, 2008 at 8:50

Kev and McDermott were possibly scouting Miguel Veloso, according to commentators. He’s a 21 year old Portuguese defensive midfielder. Looked good in the Rangers v Sporting game. He played in the Sporting first team for most of the season in 2006/07. He was especially impressive in the famous Champions League win against Inter where he stopped Patrick Vieira and Luís Figo from playing effectively. Before the match, much was made of Figo’s homecoming, but by the end of the ninety minutes all the talk was about Veloso, who turned in a man-of-the-match display in a memorable 1-0 win.

  • 133 Simon Tate // Apr 5, 2008 at 9:00

We would be mad not to bid for Arshavin (yes he is mentioned a lot). He is a great player and his performance against Lever was immense the other night, scored a great goal, created another with an excellent whipped in pass and created another opportunity with his running of the ball away from goal to open up the defense. He would be great as second striker, and would solve our right wing cover for milner as he plays as a right winger too. Great in a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. He can also play in central midfield behind 2 strikers if necessary so very flexible. Imagine him just behind martins and owen or martins/owen and viduka - ouch!

  • 134 mark // Apr 5, 2008 at 10:04

    Wayne Bridge/Shorey

    Arshavin

    Diego

    Zarate

    Van Buyten

Arshavin- yes good young talent. 6m
Bridge- yes good and reliable. 3m

Mcgeady-yes the best player in the spl.11m
Carrick-yes good passer and he is a geordie.14m

    and if Bolton go down…

Davies-yes he always tries his best. 6m
    Nolan-yes brilliant leader. 7m
    Diuf-no he is crap.
Campo-yes experienced and mint hair. free

    many rumours link…

    lennon-yes very talented. 11m
Crouch-yes good in the air. 4m
Bullard-yes good at free kicks. 3m
    barnes-yes great young talent. 7m

that is 13 player for 76m
