Chris Hughton Taking Nothing For Granted

Our new coach Chris Hughton, fresh from the impressive win at his old club Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday, has been talking to the Evening Chronicle again today.

Chris Hughton – enthusiastic coach

Chris told the Evening Chronicle:

“One thing I have found is that the quality of the football is good.” “There’s no doubt who the top four teams are in the Premier League.”

“But if you look at the teams outside the top four, Portsmouth and Aston Villa have spent money.” “Then look at what Everton and Spurs have spent and what they will spend in the summer.” “The bar has been lifted.”

“There are more clubs prepared to spend money and we have to stay up with that.”

Like the Newcastle fans, Hughton is expecting some new additions to the Newcastle squad for next season but like his boss Kevin Keegan, is refusing to look too far down the road with six important games left in the season.

The higher Newcastle finish in the league the more money they get from the Premier league, but it’s more for pride the players and Keegan are playing for now, after a terribly disappointing season.

Chris continued:

“Everybody here is going into the final few games on a high.” “There’s no doubt that the start Kevin Keegan had wasn’t the best, but there were some hard games.”

“We played Manchester United twice and then Arsenal, but now we want to win as many games as we can.” “From a financial point of view you want to finish as high as you can too.”

“And the only way to do that is by picking up as many points as we can.”

Chris has made an excellent start at Newcastle United, and for whatever reason we’ve taken a liking to him in a number of ways.

Maybe it’s his optimistic attitude and enthusiasm, but Chris seems to be an excellent coaching partner for Kevin Keegan, that’s for sure.  Chris is starting to look a solid appointment for the club.

Does a team get more money from the league for a higher finish? I didn’t know that.

Well, that’s one way to ensure a permanent top four. I don’t like that idea…

I don’t think it amounts to much in relative terms. It’s more important to us to keep getting big gates.
