Newcastle In For 21 Year-Old Portuguese Midfielder

News today that we may be in competition with Manchester United for 21 year-old Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso.

Miguel Veloso – has played 22 times for Sporting Lisbon

Veloso is Portuguese and plays defensive midfield for Sporting Lisbon, but he can also play as a center back or left back. He is also said to be a threat on set pieces.

Miguel started his career at SL Benfica where his father Antonio, was a famous footballer. But at the age of 14 he switched to rivals Sporting Clube de Portugal, where he has now played for 5 straight seasons and eventually made the first team squad in the 2004-2005 season.

He stands 5’11″ tall and has played for Sporting Lisbon 22 times.

Last August, Miguel was called up for the Portuguese national squad for the first time, for a European 2008 qualifier against Armenia and he eventually made his full international debut for Portugal against Azerbaijan on 13 October 2007.

He has so far played 5 times for his country.

havent seen him play but its good to see we’re looking towards the exciting youngsters.

sadly however, should we be in “competition” with manure for his signature…it’ll be a shock should we get him

NUFC could also try for his teammate Joao Moutinho who would be a good addition, before the thieving so called big four get there hands on him!!!

if we could get veloso a player that big clubs want, that will be great pulling power to other great players. instead of buying players off the big 4, we should buy players that even they want like veloso, farfan and someone like dunne.

Off topic but I just wanted to say that I hope WBA trash Portsmouth today. (I think they will). I do not want HR getting trophy after turning us down for, “a better club” (his words). I am glad he did or we wouldn’t have got KK back, but even so!!
Player to watch for me today is Koren he looks really sparky.

I’m constantly reminded of the 8.5m pds NUFC paid for Viana. Here comes another V – Veloso at 3 times the price of Viana.

Fortunately, its just transfer speculation. He is simply overpriced and he is not even the new Ronaldo. He is just a defensive player.

Oh great, we are now linked to all the players across the globe.

I already commented on this this morning in the 4 players in the summer article at the end. Would be a great aquisition in my view, especially given his age and he’s already clocking up european experience. Geremi and butt aren’t getting any younger.

The top 4 can’t sign everyone. Besides ManU already have hargreaves and carrick. We signed owen. I think there will def be a couple of 10 mill+ players signed in the summer – ashley wants to sell shirts remember in other parts of the globe.

super player. when united played sporting last even tho they were beaten velose was the best player on the pitch i thought. tough tackler, great passer, more energy than flamini, this guy will be good.
i hope we get him but my fear is he will be too expensive or or united will pick him up (both said to be after him)

very much a KK signing, a DM who can hold the ball, shoot well from distance, and act as a sort of playmaker. He is good, those on here who dont like him obviously havent seen enough of him and are probably basing his performance on the matcdh against Rangers. Anyway he played decent in that match so whats the fuss

People who think he isnt good or is overrated dont have a clue. He is one of the best markers and passes from deep in the world game. He is also a set piece specialist.

yes exactly, he has a great freekick and is a decent corner taker. I would very much like him at our club, but if Man U are interested then i suppose we have little chance

Tom Toon. With 22 appearances for Sporting Lisbon, he’s one of the best markers and passers from deep in the world of football?
He might be a good talent, but saying he’s among the world’s top players in his position is stretching it.

I don’t know enough about this guy to say anything too conclusive, but the valuations mentioned above seems a tad high for my liking

Newcastle really lack a good young defensive midfielder, Joey?so,so! Butt, sure but he aint getting any younger, neither is Geremi plus Veloso can fill in as a left wing back, something N`zogbia can`t do,I think his reputation speaks for its self, just depends on the price and competition.

Pete, hes made a lot more than 22 apps for Sporting i suspect ed got that from wikipedia where it hasnt been updated for about a year!

I watch him every international game he plays and quite a lot in the CL and the bwin and if you watch him as much as me you will see how good he is, he is absolutely immense (you know i dont say this about a player much). His long range passing is absolutely amazing.

We need a deep lying playmaker! Have seen this guy in a few games and he has good distribution. Dont know about his ball winning skills though.

This player is very good, he played very well against Manure last year, and is a simular player like Butt. But he is faster and he can pass the ball. If Manure buy him, we can buy Carrick from them. But I would go for Veloso.
    Emre-Veloso-Barton for midfield next year.

I’d much rather let Manure get him so they relax their grip on Carrick a bit. We need proven players if we’re talking this sort of money. Punts on young talent should be six-figure deals; no more.
