Are Newcastle After Rangers’ Spanish Center Back?

Newcastle United are said to be among Premiership clubs taking a good look at Rangers’ Spanish center-back Carlos Cuella.

Carlos Cuellar – a Keegan target in the summer?

Kevin Keegan was at Ibrox last week and news is that he was watching the Spanish central defender. It was Kevin’s second visit inside a month, after he and assistant Terry McDermott attended the 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen in the previous round.

Other reports last week said that he was taking a look at 21 year old Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso, but there appears to be some Rangers’ players interesting Kevin since he’s made trips up to Glasgow repeatedly.

Keegan is already on record as saying there are a number of SPL players who could make the leap to the Premiership these days, and there’s even news that Northern Ireland international Steven Davis, on loan to Rangers from Fulham, is another player potentially being monitored by the Tyneside club.

It seems that Rangers are almost certain to receive bids for the 6’3” Spaniard when the summer transfer window opens. But Newcastle fans will cringe if a bid is made by Kevin.

They will remember well another Ranger’s big center back we paid over £8M for in Frenchman Jean Alain Boumsong, who was a disaster at the club, when he was bought by Graeme Souness in January, 2005. Jean Alain is now playing for Lyon in France, after being moved on by Juventus in January.

No transfer fees have been mentioned for the Spaniard but we think his fee would be in the range of £4M.

We think Kevin will be bringing in a center-back, left back, creative midfielder and a big striker in the summer, at the very least.

Carlos was born in Madrid, Spain, is 26 years old and has played 26 times for Rangers this season scoring 4 goals, but he is not yet a Spanish International.

Hang on a minute, did I just see that we’re meant to be monitoring someone who can’t get in the Fulham first team and is on loan?

I wouldn’t buy Cuellar for two reasons. (1) He looks a bit like Luque and (2) Broomsong..

Signed him on Footy manager a while back. He did a great job until i got Barzagli and Zapata! Not really seen him play for Rangers but the people at SI games never seem to get much wrong. I’d like to see us get him and at 26, he’s still yet to peak. Bring on pompey!

LOL @ Tommy… Yes he does look like Luque doesn’t he? Never seen him play but being good in SPL probably makes him about Championship quality but I could be wrong!

We are only linked with him cos kk went to the rangers game. We have been linked with about 5 players who played that evening, so to be honest im not reading much into this. I think if KK gets a defender it will be someone from the premiership, like Dunne or wes brown.
Great performance again yesterday. Great clean sheet, thats important. Joey Barton is showing his class. All thats left for him, is to get a goal. He has almost got about 5 in his last two games!
We can beat Pompey next week, no doubt. They have a mid week game, and will have their minds on the FA cup, not the league.
Foue wins in a row? I reckon so!

Buying from Rangers just reminded me of buying Boumsong. What an absolute nightmare!

With our new scouting network, surely we can go further than Scotland.

he is a decent defender, but if we keep diatta, who looked solid yesterday, then we will also have edgar, taylor, faye, Beye, cacapa and rozehnal at the back. I think Cacapa and Rozehnal are both gone even though i think they deserve a chance under KK just like Butt, Geremi and Barton got.

I don’t think keegan will pass up good players because he wants to fill another position first, something that sam clearly did on several occassions this summer. It’s very simple, we need to sign 4-5 players who are better than those currently playing in the 1st XI. This guy probably isn’t.

I live in Glasgow and i can categorically say that cuellar has been awsome in most of his games this season. Not just against teams like motherwell and dundee utd, but also against top european teams.

As for people saying the likes of ‘i dont want him because boumsong was shit…what a rediculous thing to say…an entirely different player…cuellar’s tackling timing looks to be excellent, his concentration looks to be astute and at £5 million – a much better player and a better buy than the over-rated players who you english people would like to see bought because their not playing in the unfashionable SPL.

Although he scored an OG today he has been solid all season would be good buy.

Steven Davis is a good player, Its beyond me why Fulham let him go out on loan because he could have made a big difference.

Can’t really judge him, cause I’ve never watched a game from Rangers this season.
Let us hope that whoever comes will strengthen up our central defence.

Some of you say Diatta looks solid, but to be honnest it is impossible to judge him after only 8 minutes when the team is 3-0 ahead.
I hope he is a strong player who can add lots of quality to our defence. First he has to prove that he deserves a contract for next season(s).

obafan you are right, he was only on a short time, but just as an initial impression he looked decent. I agree though, he could be awful next game, but i hope he is solid as it saves us buying another player

Carlos Cuellar would be a good buy. he looks very good in the SPL, but he’s also been one of the main reasons rangers have managed to stay in the uefa cup until the stage they have too. he’s looked impressive in every game i’ve seen him play, and living in scotland, i see alot of SPL.

Scared of 2 things – number1 spanish center backs : remember Marcelino. Number 2 – center backs from Rangers – Remember Boumsang ! So imagine the state of my pants after considering a spanish centerback from Rangers !
