Who Will Be Newcastle’s Top Scorer?

With Newcastle now starting to score goals again, and lots of them, the question now is who will finish top scorer for Newcastle, in what has been a really disappointing season, but could have a great finish to it for the Newcastle faithful.

Oba Martins now has 9 goals to go with his 17 from last season

With just five games still to play, our three strikers are showing no signs of letting up whatsoever, and the players seem dedicated to giving the fans a fantastic finish to this season.

Kevin Keegan told Newcastle World TV after watching all three strikers score a goal during Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Reading.

“The three lads up front are so different to each other, it’s almost chalk, cheese and chalk again” “Oba is different from Michael who is different from Mark.” “They’ve scored seven times between them in the last three and have been the main reason behind our turnaround.”

“Having Mark back has been a big help because he gives us a focal point and some stature and experience at the head of the attack.” “That allows Oba and Michael to go and do the things they do so well.” “There’s still five games to play and we want to finish in style.”

“We’ve built a great platform for that in the last three matches and with the three lads up front scoring like they are then I see no reason why we can’t do that.”

In fact it will be very interesting how many goals each of our three strikers end up with. If we can dispatch most of our chances in one of these games, one team could easily be hit for 6 – or even more, from this Newcastle side.

Not sure which team that will be – Sunderland would obviously be a good choice -  but we think one big win is still in the offing for Newcastle before the end of this season.

What do you think?

    i think that it will b owen bcuz he already has a 1 goal lead on martins and he is scorin 1 goal every game at the moment (4 goals in 4 games)

    but i also have a concern. it is that with given out injured and haper doin sooooo well do u think that given can get a place back into the new rejuvenated nufc staring 11!!!

    We don’t *need* to give Given back his place. If he plays well, I’m sure he will earn it back himself.

    Having said that, Harper has been playing pretty well and seems to command the back 4 better than Given.

    Given’s form has dipped since the collision with Harewood (I think?) so there’s no reason why we should hurry him back so quickly. Let Harper enjoy his spell in the first team – he deserves it.

    RE: The original topic

    Owen, without doubt, is the better goalscorer right now. That doesn’t mean that Martins won’t match him in the future (I’m sure he will). But Owen will be top scorer at the end of the season.

    Top scorer:

    Head= Owen
    Heart= Oba

    The turnaround in the team has been a joy to watch (last 5 games a joy anyway 🙂 ), the press and even some fans having doubted KK’s ability even though he came back to NUFC with alot more experience than when he’d originally managed the team.

    The way a team has been created from BSA’s squad and we don’t need to have long memories to think of the formations/players positions and results achieved by BSA.

    We’ve had a strange season but as ever we’re optimistic for the future again and tbh SJP is in the best position now than it has for a very very long time.

    No debt, rich owner ready to back the club with more money (we think),competent team of scouts, great man manager with his trusted backroom staff, small but talented squad and fresh young talented players fighting for first team chances.

    The future is bright and if the last few games are anything to go by it’s gonna be entertaining again, all we really wanted.

    With the flock of good young keepers we’ve got pushing through, I’d like to see Given sold in the Summer while we can still get a decent amount for him. He’s undoubtedly a good Keeper but I rate Harper more. Shay also seems to have spent two seasons injured.

    RE: ChrisL

    That’s probably a bit harsh, to be fair. Shay has given many years of excellent service and we can’t forget that.

    He should be allowed to try and reclaim his spot.

    Hi Bob, I know what you mean…. he’s been just about the best keeper in the Prem for years, but I honestly think that Harper just has the edge on him. I’m just wanting the best for the Toon and wonder if we’re approaching the time when we need to plan for the future.

    If Owen sharpens up a bit he will be knocking another 10 in before the end of the season…. to my knowledge he’s on a 3 sitter opportunities per goal at the moment.

    re: Harper and Given – if a race horse wins gold for years and goes lame you don’t shoot him but you do put him out to pasture. Shay is seriously hurting now; I would say defo. one more chance but if there is a dip in form as obivous as last time questions will be asked.

    at the moment i’d have to agree that harper definately has the edge.

    Shay given just hasnt been the same player since that incident at West Ham, though i dont think you can blame him, it was a pretty horrific injury. I know he is obviously having physical treatment for his current injury, but i think given should also be using this time to get some psychological assistance so that he can regain his old composure, form and presence, as its just not been there lately.

    as for top scorer, probably owen as has 1 goal lead on oba, and now he is playing just behind the other two keeps managing to slip through the defenders attentions.

    Owen is best finisher I’ve ever seen apart from Shearer.

    If Oba learns from him he’d be amazing. But for now my money would be on Owen finishing top of the toon goal chart.

    Owen will get it, even though i want Oba to.

    Joel the site is good but the section where people are supposed to vote for Lennon, Fabiano etc has an error. It says something like ‘who should who buy’

    Owen seems to get more chances so logically it will be him.
    Oba is now showing more quality from his finishing, instead of mindlessly blasting it anywhere as previously, so it may be very close.
    Viduka is a great finisher but is doing more in the assist role. It will be interesting to see who tallies more points in the two aspects.

    I am amazed that I am actually praising Viduka, I thought he was a (considerable) waste of space only a few games ago. Glad he is proving me wrong.

    I think it’s got to be Owen. With the other two there, his ability to finish is just getting better and better. The one he put in on Saturday was a lot harder than it looked at first.

    So for me it’ll be Owen, Martins, Duke. But frankly I really don’t care as long as we get some more convincing wins in.

    By the way – I’m tempted to make the long drive to Portsmouth on Saturday but the only person I know there is on hols. Anyone on here going who fancies meeting up for pre- and post- match pints?

    Indeed if the team is winning then it is second in my mind who scored the goal. It is important to have quality strikers wwho can finish very well and we do have 3 of a kind 🙂 .

    1. Owen: fantastic finisher always has been
    2. Martins: is starting to get calm when he comes in front of the goal (Spurs now Reading)µ
    3. Viduka: is more our target man and is very important in holding the ball as long as the others are in the box

    I think Oba is going to be top scorer. With Owen closely behind.

    As for the Harper vs Shay. With Tim Krul doing so well at Falkirk (until he was injured) I’m thinking one will definitely be moved on. Though it pains me to say as of this season I would have to go with selling Shay. As he’s prone to injury and lacked some confidence. Even though I believe he is the better of the two keepers. He’s just been flat and unreliable this season.

    It would be great if all three could hit double figures for the season. Currently I think over all competitions it stands at:
    Owen = 10
    Martins = 9
    Viduka = 7

    p.s. Butt is equal forth with 3!

    If Given is moved on then that somes up this Football club Consistantly brilliant for 10 years a blip after some horrific injuries for a season and its adios.

    Yet Viduka, Barton, Geremi and Butt who havent done anything of note for our club in the past now are flavour of the month after a few good matches and all should stay.

    ridiculous

    Shay is the much better keeper and when he comes back fully fit from injury harper can reprint his arse crease in the bench.

    Probably say Owen, as he is prob. due a hat-trick or at least a brace!..But i wouldn’t rule out Viduka comin’ up on the outside!..
    …On Harper/Shay…Harper has been better this season, no doubt!..Wouldn’t sell Shay tho’, there’s soooo much left in the tank, he just needs to get ‘fully’ fit & fairly ‘win’ his place back…Big respect to Harper tho’, he’s playing well & totally deserves his chance!..Good luck to the lad!..

    Craigg, I do agree with most of what you say. Shay has been terrific in the past, but his injuries extend to more than just this season. As I stated Shay is in my opinion the better keeper, but unfortunately in Football the attitude is what have you done for us lately. I do feel that either Harper or Given will be gone in the summer and Krul will be our number two keeper next year. Mind you it’s purely my opinion and speculation.

    Well you maybe right, Krul and Forster are both going to be top notch keepers

    I just hope we could send those kids out on loan as i dont think it would help them progress sitting on the bench for a few seasons when they could play in competitive leagues like both Shay and Steve have done on past loans.

    It would be a shame if we sold Harper or Given both have been great for the club and both still can contribute for a few years they are both 31 and 32 i think, which i still young for Keepers anyway if you look at how well James is still playing at 37 and Seaman, Shilton and Martyn all were still playing for England at 40.

    Nobody seems to comment on the fact that Oba creates more chances than Michael. So its VERY possible Oba could get a hat trick…with that said The Duke and Owen up front have given Owen many chances for a hat trick…and he’s a much better finisher than Oba Martins…God who knows, who cares and hopefully the race stays close and into the double figures : )

    this healthy competition of who’d be our top scorer is good for the team which resulting us to win (maybe) all the remaining games. KK’d give some presents for it if this is the case.
