Newcastle Game Against Portsmouth Crucial

April 10th, 2008 · 35 Comments

Newcastle have some payback to make at Portsmouth on Saturday, for their 4-1 humiliating defeat at St. James’ Park on November 3rd last year.

Steve Harper - confident of getting a result on Saturday

Newcastle’s goalkeeper Steve Harper is confident that Newcastle are now ready to get their revenge when they travel to Fratton Park for Saturday’s game with the now FA Cup Finalists.

Of course this will the first game against Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, who was close to becoming Newcastle’s manager in January.

Steve Harper told Newcastle World TV.

“We certainly owe them one,” “To be three down at home inside 11 minutes is something I never want to repeat.”

“We were gutted after that game and it was one of the lowest points of the season.” “But credit to Portsmouth, they’ve had a good year and are now in the FA Cup Final.”

“It will be a tough game because it’s always a difficult place to go and it’s a great atmosphere.”

“But the form we’re in at the moment means we’re looking forward to it and are extremely confident of getting a result.”

It will be an interesting game on Saturday, and will go somewhere towards letting the Newcastle fans know just how good this current side is.  A win would extend the Newcastle winning streak to 4 games, and will auger well for where we can finish in the league this season.

The goal has to be to overtake both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, and get into 10th place in the league. That would help Newcastle fans forget about what has been a rather depressing season in terms of achievement - or to be more accurate - non-achievement.

What do you think about this?

Comments very welcome.

everyone Davey G is Knighsbobmoncur so dont be too surprised if you find the two agreeing with each other regularly. Read the article about sir bobby robsons words and you will see his comments and figure it out in a matter of seconds, how embarrassing.

    Whatever

I dont think we should be talking about this game in terms of revenge - we need to be more professional than that. Even if we hade beaten them 4- 1 at St James park we should still be approaching this game with the same hunger and appetite to win.

I think the team have got the wind behind them now, and for their own pride want to get in to the top half of the table.

I am very proud of my team over last few weeks, and am confident they will make a good account of themselves - its about playing for pride not revenge.

Three points would be good, and it will help to keep up the current momentum that has lifted us up from the relegation zone, but a win isn’t crucial.

It’s important, because it would be nice to get past Tottenham on the table, but, given the already awful season, staying up has to be the first priority. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, I want wins until the end of the season as much as the next man, but we’re away at Fratton Park, so even picking up one point will be an achievement. Losing would not be the end of the world.

When I sit in front of my friends television (I don’t have Sky or Setanta) on Saturday afternoon, I will not be predicting a drubbing like the one we gave Spurs, but simply hoping the team continues to play in the way they have since the second half against Birmingham.

I will, of course, be extremely grateful for any points that come from this game, and even moreso if we end up reducing our negative goal difference.

    Fingers crossed.

Spyro if you need new names just let me know.:-)
Out of curiosity, what is your real name if its not a secret.

  • 5 Graham // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:14

3 points would be great but lets not get ahead of ourselves just because we’ve won a few games.

Portsmouth is always a difficult place to go (and its a dump). I would happily settle for a draw there but you never know.

Sticking my neck out at 2-1 to us - Oba getting the 2

  • 6 Hadji // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:15

    Revenge is never sweet.

  • 7 Graham // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:18

Spyro - if your that concerned get Ed to give you kids each others email addresses and sort yoursleves out.

  • 8 Graham // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:19

Hadji - but what would be sweet is that revenge would possibly put us above Spurs

  • 9 Hadji // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:24

Yes Graham i understand that and i would love if we WIN and go above Spurs.

  • 10 NUFCFAN // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:27

just want to finish above spurs!

  • 11 Jack Franklin // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:40

Will be at the game on Sat! Think we can win it - hoping Pompey will be hung over or something lol.

  • 12 Viper // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:45

Revenge is a very unique word, aye.

But self satisfaction can mean similar (and does/has).

Been to crapnottarf years ago and we were given portaloos to piss in. How kind and professional.

I’m happy to stick with revenge!

    On the Toon!

  • 13 Martin // Apr 10, 2008 at 18:51

You are going through a winning blip. Pompey will burst your bubble. You’ll know trouble when we do the double over you.

You’ve only won agianst of 08 minnows so far. Recon Sunderland will do you too

  • 14 Leo // Apr 10, 2008 at 19:06

portsmouth is a lovely place… im born and bread geordie and always will be but i cant understand why people put a downer on portsmouth on here, great ireland and has some great people there also.

good history too if you like that sort of thing…

back to the football. i dont think i will loose sleep if we dont beat pompey or get a point for that matter, it will be a hard game i will just look forward to watching it on the couch with a lager in hand, that is unless someone wants to sell me their ticket for the game?

  • 15 Toonloon // Apr 10, 2008 at 19:37

Revenge is a dish best served cold…

3-1, 4-1 in our favour with a non penalty in our favour will be great. It’s been a tough season. Let’s have it all in our favour… maybe even some good comments on MOTD!

  • 16 Matt Lacey // Apr 10, 2008 at 19:39

Pompey haven’t been that great recently, it was well within West Brom’s ability to win at the weekend and they didn’t - but I think we can!

    Looking forward to it :)

  • 18 micepie // Apr 10, 2008 at 20:25

I don’t see why it’s especially crucial but it would be a very satisfying one to get a good result in!

  • 19 ronaldeano // Apr 10, 2008 at 20:39

Spyro, you are Dragoner you hypocritical twat! :)

  • 20 Spot The Zebra // Apr 10, 2008 at 21:23

I think we should try and score 3 goals in the first 11 minutes.

  • 21 reillers // Apr 10, 2008 at 21:26

Leo, pardon my wee ignorance but what has Portsmouth got to do with Ireland?

  • 22 Leo // Apr 10, 2008 at 21:51

lol. portsmouth is technically an ireland, its connected to england though two rivers that meet… thats what i was told when i went down there to visit.

  • 23 Leo // Apr 10, 2008 at 21:52

language ronaldeano please, remember the kids if u wana use explitives put a * in instead of some of the letters or a @ in tw-t

    ;-)

  • 24 sas1 // Apr 10, 2008 at 22:29

“portsmouth is technically an ireland, its connected to england though two rivers that meet… thats what i was told when i went down there to visit.”

    They probably meant “island” Leo

  • 25 daiv // Apr 10, 2008 at 22:41

This game is worth 3 meaningless points and no more than that. I am grateful we stayed up. Now we want to beat the |Irons and Spurs in he league. And our team which was rubbish is suddenly a good team. What is going on? Its hardly a crucial game. Any NUFC win is great but crucial it aint. Reality check Ed.

  • 26 daiv // Apr 10, 2008 at 22:57

Couple more wins and we’ll be talking of winning the league next season. Its the same team we worried might get relegated a few weeks ago.

  • 27 ScottyT // Apr 10, 2008 at 23:11

portsmouths atmosphere is usually very good and add to that our own away support should be a very good atmosphere inside the stadium.

im going for a draw which tbh if wer being realistic would be a good result. same team again id have to say but change edgar for the fit again taylor. also think we should maybe put people like lualua edgar and carroll on bench and give them a run out at some point.

  • 28 Leo // Apr 10, 2008 at 23:28

haha typo, ive been working all day on my dissertation and so im not too hot at the nite

  • 29 Eric // Apr 11, 2008 at 9:19

Just go down there lads and try and get three points. Show that manager of theirs that we turned him down for a reason. As the Toon most likely said - “On your bike Redknapp and do not make up a load of shite when you get back south”. Pay back time. How about some hari kari Harry?

  • 30 hanzemre // Apr 11, 2008 at 10:01

yea Portsmouth is a lovely place to see around. been there in ‘96. hopefully we The Toon win this time as now we’ve everything right & a win is defo sweet. 2-1 with Owen & Martins to score.

  • 31 Chicken // Apr 11, 2008 at 10:14

Viper (12) - I’m not sure where you’re from mate - but where I live “self-satisfaction” is something you do with a box of kleenex in front of the five minute freeview. It aint got nothing to do with revenge our kid ;)

  • 32 TS // Apr 11, 2008 at 11:04

Not sure which Portsmouth you lads have been visiting but I used to live down that way and I can tell you for nowt it’s a pretty nasty place. Not dangerous really, just run down and a bit scummy. Fratton’s got a good atmosphere, I’ll give you that, but it’s all but ruined by that stupid bloody pikey ringing a f***ing bell all through the match.

  • 33 ChrisL // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:57

We may catch Spurs but I think West Ham are probably to far ahead now. I’d just be pleased to get over 43 points (our previous lowest total)

  • 34 Viper // Apr 11, 2008 at 13:27

Chicken (31), you must’ve been in a situation where a bit of the aforementioned ’self satisfaction’ has been attained by err, administering a bit of shall we say; revenge… (the feel better part of it!)
[from the Toon by the way]

  • 35 Chicken // Apr 11, 2008 at 14:19

    viper - haha, maybe
