Newcastle have some payback to make at Portsmouth on Saturday, for their 4-1 humiliating defeat at St. James’ Park on November 3rd last year.
Steve Harper - confident of getting a result on Saturday
Newcastle’s goalkeeper Steve Harper is confident that Newcastle are now ready to get their revenge when they travel to Fratton Park for Saturday’s game with the now FA Cup Finalists.
Of course this will the first game against Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, who was close to becoming Newcastle’s manager in January.
Steve Harper told Newcastle World TV.
“We certainly owe them one,” “To be three down at home inside 11 minutes is something I never want to repeat.â€
“We were gutted after that game and it was one of the lowest points of the season.†“But credit to Portsmouth, they’ve had a good year and are now in the FA Cup Final.”
“It will be a tough game because it’s always a difficult place to go and it’s a great atmosphere.â€
“But the form we’re in at the moment means we’re looking forward to it and are extremely confident of getting a result.”
It will be an interesting game on Saturday, and will go somewhere towards letting the Newcastle fans know just how good this current side is. A win would extend the Newcastle winning streak to 4 games, and will auger well for where we can finish in the league this season.
The goal has to be to overtake both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, and get into 10th place in the league. That would help Newcastle fans forget about what has been a rather depressing season in terms of achievement - or to be more accurate - non-achievement.

I dont think we should be talking about this game in terms of revenge - we need to be more professional than that. Even if we hade beaten them 4- 1 at St James park we should still be approaching this game with the same hunger and appetite to win.
I think the team have got the wind behind them now, and for their own pride want to get in to the top half of the table.
I am very proud of my team over last few weeks, and am confident they will make a good account of themselves - its about playing for pride not revenge.

Three points would be good, and it will help to keep up the current momentum that has lifted us up from the relegation zone, but a win isn’t crucial.
It’s important, because it would be nice to get past Tottenham on the table, but, given the already awful season, staying up has to be the first priority. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, I want wins until the end of the season as much as the next man, but we’re away at Fratton Park, so even picking up one point will be an achievement. Losing would not be the end of the world.
When I sit in front of my friends television (I don’t have Sky or Setanta) on Saturday afternoon, I will not be predicting a drubbing like the one we gave Spurs, but simply hoping the team continues to play in the way they have since the second half against Birmingham.
I will, of course, be extremely grateful for any points that come from this game, and even moreso if we end up reducing our negative goal difference.

Portsmouth is always a difficult place to go (and its a dump). I would happily settle for a draw there but you never know.

portsmouth is a lovely place… im born and bread geordie and always will be but i cant understand why people put a downer on portsmouth on here, great ireland and has some great people there also.
good history too if you like that sort of thing…
back to the football. i dont think i will loose sleep if we dont beat pompey or get a point for that matter, it will be a hard game i will just look forward to watching it on the couch with a lager in hand, that is unless someone wants to sell me their ticket for the game?

This game is worth 3 meaningless points and no more than that. I am grateful we stayed up. Now we want to beat the |Irons and Spurs in he league. And our team which was rubbish is suddenly a good team. What is going on? Its hardly a crucial game. Any NUFC win is great but crucial it aint. Reality check Ed.

portsmouths atmosphere is usually very good and add to that our own away support should be a very good atmosphere inside the stadium.
im going for a draw which tbh if wer being realistic would be a good result. same team again id have to say but change edgar for the fit again taylor. also think we should maybe put people like lualua edgar and carroll on bench and give them a run out at some point.

Not sure which Portsmouth you lads have been visiting but I used to live down that way and I can tell you for nowt it’s a pretty nasty place. Not dangerous really, just run down and a bit scummy. Fratton’s got a good atmosphere, I’ll give you that, but it’s all but ruined by that stupid bloody pikey ringing a f***ing bell all through the match.
