A great story on BBC Look North about Kevin Keegan and one of his biggest fans.
Kevin meeting Newcastle fan Sister Josepha Matthews yesterday
Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan met one of his most devoted fans yesterday, when he met Sister Josepha Matthews at St Vincent’s RC Primary in Newcastle. Sister Matthews is a 53 year old Nun who has supported Newcastle United for 37 years and used to play football herself – as a center forward, no less.
The football-mad nun uses Newcastle legends Jackie Milburn, Alan Shearer and of course Kevin Keegan, in her teachings at the Roman Catholic school.
Keegan told BBC Look North.
“It’s the first time we’ve met. She’s a character,”
“She reminds me of a teacher who influenced me. She used to referee and you never argued with her as a nun.”
Sister Matthews has worked diligently over the last few years raising money and refereeing matches for the school football team.
She talked to BBC Look North and was obviously delighted to meet Kevin:
“I think they’ll see first of all that Kevin Keegan is a friend of Sisters,”
“To think that he would come into our little school. I can’t believe what has happened today – it’s brilliant.”
Kevin is so popular at the club, because he is always willing to do these kinds of things, and long may he continue. It’s a credit to the football club.
And there’s an obvious reason why Sister Josepha Matthews was so delighted to meet Kevin yesterday – after all he is the Messiah – at least in and around Newcastle. 😀
