Newcastle played very well on the south coast and denied Pompey the win they wanted to give their fans after reaching the final of the FA Cup.
Nicky Butt – impressive display in front of England coach Capello
Newcastle held Portsmouth this afternoon, and with a little more luck could have taken all 3 points at Fratton Park.
But on balance the 0-0 draw was probably a fair result overall. Nicky Butt seems to be very satisfied to go back to Tyneside with a point, as he spoke after the game:
“Yes it’s a good point, because this is a hard place to come and we knew it would be tough so we feel this is a good result.â€
Nicky was then asked what the turning point was in Newcastle’s recent good run of form, and Butt took the opportunity to praise his manager, Kevin Keegan.
“He has changed us. We now have confidence, and confidence is a big thing in football because it makes you do things you wouldn’t normally do.”
“We’re playing with more tempo now and of course we are happier so are naturally playing better.”
“What Kevin has done is said ‘just enjoy yourself’, and I think we had a good first half, of course they had more of the ball in the second, but we kept our shape and got the point.â€
It was a good point and stands us in good stead to still catch Tottenham and West Ham, who are above us in the table. We gained a point on the Hammers today and are now 5 points behind them and remain 2 points behind Spurs.
A good win next Sunday afternoon against Sunderland, should put us back on our quest for 10th place, which is certainly very possible.
