Nicky Butt Pleased With Point

Newcastle played very well on the south coast and denied Pompey the win they wanted to give their fans after reaching the final of the FA Cup.

Nicky Butt – impressive display in front of England coach Capello

Newcastle held Portsmouth this afternoon, and with a little more luck could have taken all 3 points at Fratton Park.

But on balance the 0-0 draw was probably a fair result overall. Nicky Butt seems to be very satisfied to go back to Tyneside with a point, as he spoke after the game:

“Yes it’s a good point, because this is a hard place to come and we knew it would be tough so we feel this is a good result.”

Nicky was then asked what the turning point was in Newcastle’s recent good run of form, and Butt took the opportunity to praise his manager, Kevin Keegan.

“He has changed us. We now have confidence, and confidence is a big thing in football because it makes you do things you wouldn’t normally do.”

“We’re playing with more tempo now and of course we are happier so are naturally playing better.”

“What Kevin has done is said ‘just enjoy yourself’, and I think we had a good first half, of course they had more of the ball in the second, but we kept our shape and got the point.”

It was a good point and stands us in good stead to still catch Tottenham and West Ham, who are above us in the table. We gained a point on the Hammers today and are now 5 points behind them and remain 2 points behind Spurs.

A good win next Sunday afternoon against Sunderland, should put us back on our quest for 10th place, which is certainly very possible.

Disappointed we didn’t get a win, would love to have gone up on spurs and hauled to within 3 of hammers. Still, going down to pomey and taking a well earned point is a good result. 3 clean sheets in 4 games. Who’d have thought we see that at this stage of the season 2 months ago.

I would have taken a point before the game but after the game I’m disappointed to have only a point. I thought we bossed the game for the last 70 minutes, but after what I’ve been watching this season, i’m happy to take a point from Pompey who are fighting for the Uefa spot. It shows how things have changed for us in the last few weeks.

But still my only criticism of the team is letting Geremi take the free kicks and corners, although his free kicks were pretty good today his corners were bloody awful. He still can’t get his corners past the firt defender and it’s driving me bonkers!!!!!!

plus he can’t cross to save his life, what makes you think he can take corners ?? he would probably kick it out for a throw in on the other side 😀

Two best players on the park yesterday Butt and Geremi, two very underestimated players.

The midfield was packed, both defences pushed up. Butt was everywhere and Geremi was equally diligent with work rate and clever positioning, often to allow other players move into space.

There was one sublime move between he and Beye that although came to nothing was the best one-two of the match.

Barton looks as if he is starting to rekindle some lost aggression. I believe we will see him step up to another level next season (judge willing). He’s worth a punt at corner taking – surely?

Seeing as this thread is supposed to be about Nicky Butt I’d just like to say hats off to the lad. He’s taken a hell of a lot of stick from the fans lately (some of it justified, some of it not so) but he’s stuck at it and him and probably Owen have been our two most consistent performers over our 5 game unbeaten run.

Well done Nicky – keep up the good work lad.

ps; Barton is a total waste of space – the sooner he gets banged up the better – horrible, nasty little scum bag he is.

al go through rest of this season (watch none of these be right now lol):

    mackems – win
    west ham – draw
chelsea – draw or lose have to w8 for the other 2 rsults b4 a make a decision
    everton – lose
