Keegan has spoken often of his desire to keep Michael Owen at Newcastle.

Kevin talked about Owen’s contract talks today:
“It’s for Chris Mort to do that now. I’ve made it absolutely clear what I think should be done, and I’ve passed that on to him.”
“He will handle that now so any questions about that will be between Chris Mort and Michael’s advisors.”
“But my feeling is, genuinely, that he wants to be here, he wants to help lead this club for the next few years.”
“I don’t want to tempt providence, but I think that is a deal that will be done as soon as they get together, really. I don’t think it will take long.”
It’s hard for Kevin to hide the fact that he desperately wants to keep Michael. It must have been something he’s seen in Michael since January, because by his own admission he didn’t realize how good Michael was, when he was managing England.
But it’s true that since Kevin arrived Owen has been a different player, and so much more involved and interested at Newcastle. He’s been a credit to himself as the Newcastle captain.
We’re quite sure Chris Mort will get the job done. It’s the first item on the agenda before Kevin starts bringing new players to the club, and that will start very shortly. 
Let’s hope we can get a quick agreement with Michael, so the club gets off to a good start.

Get him signed already. Although we need to keep Oba as well, since he has more upside and Owen always get injured.

To be fair to Fat Sam, Michael was injured for a large chunk of the time he was manager and it was him who set up the training regime which seems to have kept him fit.
I doubt if he would have had the sense to play him as well as KK has though.

Sam would have tryed to make him like Kevin Davies, the same way he did with Anelka at Bolton

This will be a big test for Chris Mort - If he gives a good deal and makes Owen sign fast - that’ll be a job well done - If it drags on a bit like Taylors then it’ll be a bad job. Chris must get this right!

i am sure he will stay. lets look at it. he will not go abroad so lets rule all them possible options out. so, it leaves chelski…he wont go there as the club is plastic and has no heart. liverpool looks mega unstable in terms of the massive amount of debt they have plus rival factions within their own owners etc…they could seriously impload - they are out. arse is a non starter as he is not in the mould of what wenger looks for so that realisticly leaves manure… that is the only team that could possibly tempt michael. i reckon that he actually really is enjoying his time with us though and that he will sign. he has figured it out at last…what it takes to make it at newcastle, its simple, love newcastle and newcastle will love you back. my money says he stays and signs on for 4 more years.

Let him go Man City for £10m and let them pay his £110 thousand a week wages.
I watched him play for England when he was meant to be injured for the Toon then come saturday he was on the bench .
I can think of 9 quality strikers who will play for the shirt and not the money and collect half his wages.
Owens best playing days where at the Kop even Madrid did`nt want to know him , he kept the subs bench warm there..

we are not the qaulity of madrid or liverpool. they had two strikers on form, owen was settling in, why would they play him?

dave hill real mite not wanted to know him and he may hav kept the subs bench warm but he was still the most prolific goal scorer in spain tht season, he may not be the same player he was years ago at liverpool but i think he cud score more goals next season under kk than he has ever scored in the prem

owen is a top player the type of player that would attract other top players to newcastle an instinctive finisher and if he wants to stay witch i didn’t think he would of course we should keep him. the only reason the man hasn’t scored a bag full of goals this season is that he has had no service from midfield

Owen tells the story himself about being frustrated sitting every week on the bench.
At Liverpool he was a world class player playing in a world class team who used to put 4 or 5 goals past Newcastle every season.

Madrid have a masive squad full of world class stars owen played more game’s than people think henry isn’t playing regular football at the minute is he not world class? some people don’t fit in!!

He did play alot of games but came off the bench to play them.
And your right some people don`t fit in like Owen on the Toon.
Under his Black and white shirt he wares his blue and white Man City shirt.
Him and Sven love each other and often have swinging partys..

king kev has given owen captaincy, showing he has faith in him, owen himself has came out and said how he wants to succeed with the club, and he’s started to bang them in.

Bill F - I think you made a very good point
but yeah I didn’t care much for BSA as a manager at Newcastle. Remember when everyone was saying NUFC is a crazy club, and they don’t know what they’re doing, so glad KKev proved them wrong. The guy must definately know football.

Owen has improved, it is a credit to him the way he behaves as captain and I hope he has taken to the club, that said he is not one of the top goalscorers in the premiership, he isnt top goalscorer over the last five games even, other players have scored two and three goals in one game, so we must keep our feet on the ground and offer him a fair contract relative to his potential goals in the season which looks to be up to 15, there is nothing to indicate that he is going to be a 20+ goals per season player, as others have said his injury record isnt brilliant either.
I hope he is offered a fair contract, he realises that he cannot command the highest wages in the land and settles for it, however if there are bonuses in there for goals over a certain amount which could take him to highest paid then fair enough as it would be deserved, but we do not want to be the team that signs big names no matter how they perform otherwise we will never improve.

Fair point Ian, however Micheal owen has scored 3 goals from 5 games playing in a very deep position he is pretty much playing as an attacking midfielder and there has been so much more to his game than the goals he has been scoring, therefore in my opinion chris mort needs offer him a good deal and get him tied down. I do like your idea and agree with u that we should offer him an incentive based on goals and I have no doubts that if he stays fit next season playing in a team playing with confidence he will score 20 plus goals.
