Cross Wes Brown and Carrick Off The List

It looks like any chance Newcastle have of signing Wes Brown or Michael Carrick in the summer have evaporated.

Wes Brown – cross him off the list of players coming to Newcastle

The surprising news yesterday is that Wes Brown has finally signed a new contract with Manchester United. It’s what manager Alex Ferguson had been hoping for and what he had even predicted a few months ago.

Wes has been deputizing all season at right back for the injured United captain Gary Neville, but had refused to sign the contract that the Red Devils has put in front of him, saying it wasn’t good enough.

But he seems to have had a change of mind and singed the contract last night. In fact Manchester have agreed new long- term contracts with Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand and midfielder Michael Carrick. There was some hope that Keegan might go after local boy Michael Carrick in the summer, but that now looks unlikely.

Sir Alex Ferguson last night spoke of Brown:

“There’s no other club for Wes Brown. He’s a Manchester United player and we were always quietly confident he would sign.”

Michael Carrick, born and bred in Wallsend, and a former Wallend Boy’s Club and England Boy’s Club star, joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2006 from Tottenham Hotspur. He is now close to 100 appearances for the Premier League champions.

That is a bit of bad news, those two boys would have been good signings, especially Carrick.

But how much would we have had to fork out for Carrick? He still had 3 years on his current contract.

Good to them and us too. Wes Brown will be next Brumble. Carrick is local and very good signing for us but no regret to him. Good luck at Manchester.

Carrick was never a realistic target and I’m not concerned at missing out on Brown. I am quietly confident in KK and the management team’s signings in close season and look forward to the real news rather than speculation.

lets be honest, anyone who had thought that we would get carrick was just being silly, and wes brown would of been a good signing but am sure theres better players out there we can get, look up people king kevins back and am sure he will have some tricks up his very long sleeve.

I’m not interested in who we might sign, only in who we have signed.

well lets look on the bright side, that means they are less likely to want veloso and moutinho.

although if we make a bid i fully expect them to put a bid in higher just to make it hard for us, even if they dont want them.

Not bothered at all about this news. Carrick was only mentioned as he is a local lad and Brown is too much like Taylor – good when he’s with a comanding centre half (Ferdinand etc) but a liability at times when he’s the main man.

it does not matter anyway lads. have you seen morts comments….. he is not really looking at spending any fooking money ….again!!! i love the fact that we HAVe no debt now and that mike ashley seems in touch with us but i dont understand why we have really spent no money on any players really. lets look at it, what sam brought in was largly off-set by what he has sold. kk has signed no-one yet either. it seems strange that for a club with a turnover like ours with our fan base a ticket sales, merchendise etc plus tv deals bigger than ever adn coupled with the fact we now have no loan repayments seem EXTREAMLEY reluctant to spend a bloody cent! well, i am sure that kk was PROMISED BIG money in the transfer market as part of the sweetner to bring him back. well, i hope that mort and ashley stick to their word as we all know what kk thinks of double crossers and sly dealings. he is honest and he will expect his bosses to be too. WHERE IS THE MONEY??

Mort’s words are music to my ears: “Historically, the club has looked to please fans by making a ‘statement signing’ every now and again. Looking back, I’m not sure if that’s the way to develop long-term success. I want to bring players who are going to develop the club over three to five years. ”

Anyone who thought Brown and Carrick would come to Gallowgate needed their heads read. What is it with us Geordies? We don’t want to sign players – for some reason our “but we’re a massive club” mentality means we have to sign “name” players. Elano! Who suggested him? Not a chance!

Mort will spend a significant amount this summer – but it will be on players outside the Premier League. They’re all over-priced, over-hyped, over-paid prima-donnas. Wise has been working hard to identify the targets Keegan needs filling.

craig chisholm get a grip you numpty. Mort has never said that there is no money available. All he has said is that there wont be any superstar names just to put arses on seats (owen etc)

There will be money available but whats the point in blowing it on a couple of big names just to satisfy the fans? Its got to be for the good of the mid to long term future of the football club and not just for now.

It’s people like you who give this club its bad name expecting shedloads of cash to be given just for the sake of it. It has been proven that it doesn’t work long term – looks at Leeds and even ourselves. £15m for Shearer, £17M for Owen and all the other trophy signings dont make a club successfull.

As I said – get a grip on reality

you call me a numpty but then go on to knock shearer in your comment. You are the numpty. mort mentions leeds blah blah…. how can he mention that senario when we have spent nothing as such on players? do you call keegan a numpty too?? it was only last week that he said he would love to bring in henry and break the transfer record again…. another numpty i presume. the club does not need fans like me you say…. i have been a season ticket holder for 16 years now and turn up for most of the games. its my fooking money (and it will be alot more than you spend with nufc a year) that keeps and has kept us going along with the other die hards. so wind ya neck in.

oh and another thing which you failed to pick up on is how poorly morts words will have came across to his very own bloody team captain. ‘in the past we have gone for trophy signings and i am not sure its the right way to go’. while i am not saying if he is correct or not in what he says what i am saying is that he has just taken a ill timed dig at owen as he is after all our biggest trophy signing ever.

Thing is though Craig, all he has said is that there is a different culture now. Shepherd always looked for the trophy signing, ignoring the gaping holes in our squad. Mort is basically saying that the current regime will avoid such a scenario in the future.

That said, I do have a niggling feeling that won’t go away about the summer. I would like to think we will go for 4-5 sensible senior additions to the squad and maybe a couple of youngsters, but its all up to Mr Ashley. Here’s hoping….

cum on nick, morts words came over very much as if to say, we aint spending much in the summer lads so forget it. graham is wrong in what he thinks. the simple truth is, if you want to challenge you have to spend the coin. i think every team that wants to have any serious ambitions must have a balance of big names along with the young ens etc. how many times have you heard people such as martins for example say ‘ it was michael owens name that made me want to come here, i want to play with him? many times. we need superstars, not many, perhasps three in a team. at the minute we have owen and the potential of martins. i would say zogs but the bloke wants to leave us – again. every team in the prem has plenty of 2-4 million quid players, that means nothing now, its bargin basement, it really is. mort is an accountant and a number cruncher, he is going to look at the bottom line profit over ambition, you can see that in his words. he wants to get young blokes in and just tread water for three or four years until they mature into HOPEFULLY great talent. that is why wise is in….. to save money. thats great and i like that idea BUT if we dont couple that with some established names in the mean time we will go backwards, we will not even tred water. look at us now, we can not even match pompy on the pitch, we should be thrashing them. we are after all supposed to be the 13th (i thin k) richest footy team in the world.
