Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan talked to BBC Radio after the match today, and revealed that some of his players were surprised at the great atmosphere created by the Newcastle fans.
Kevin Keegan – players wowed by Newcastle fans
Kevin told BBC Radio Newcastle after the 2-0 derby win over Sunderland:
“Credit to the players, we never ever played well against Sunderland today,”
“If you take the level of performance, I could have taken four or five players off at half-time.â€
“It’s the character. Geremi and [Joey] Barton gave the ball away but they didn’t hide, they try again.”
Keegan, was also impressed with the turnout of the fans who packed St. James’ Park this afternoon with over 52,300 being in the ground for the 148th Tyne-Wear derby.
“If you get results here, the fans come here behind you. If you don’t, you have to win them over and that’s what this group of players have done,”
“They’ve had a tough time this year, win them over and then you get an atmosphere like that.â€
“A lot of the players were saying ‘Wow, we’ve never expected anything like that’ and I said you’ll get that every week if you wear the shirt with pride.”
There’s no doubt Kevin has a very special bond with the Newcastle faithful and he knows exactly what they wants and what makes them happy.
He’s already transformed the team he took over to one that plays attractive football going forward – and wins.
This is another good result for the Magpies and it’s now 6 games undefeated with 4 clean sheets, and we’d be somewhat surprised to taste defeat in any of our last three games of the season.
We are hoping for another 9 points, to be quite honest.
