Kevin Keegan – players wowed by Newcastle fans

Kevin told BBC Radio Newcastle after the 2-0 derby win over Sunderland:

“Credit to the players, we never ever played well against Sunderland today,”

“If you take the level of performance, I could have taken four or five players off at half-time.”

“It’s the character. Geremi and [Joey] Barton gave the ball away but they didn’t hide, they try again.”

Keegan, was also impressed with the turnout of the fans who packed St. James’ Park this afternoon with over 52,300 being in the ground for the 148th Tyne-Wear derby.

Keegan continued:

“If you get results here, the fans come here behind you. If you don’t, you have to win them over and that’s what this group of players have done,”

“They’ve had a tough time this year, win them over and then you get an atmosphere like that.”

“A lot of the players were saying ‘Wow, we’ve never expected anything like that’ and I said you’ll get that every week if you wear the shirt with pride.”

There’s no doubt Kevin has a very special bond with the Newcastle faithful and he knows exactly what they wants and what makes them happy.

He’s already transformed the team he took over to one that plays attractive football going forward – and wins.

This is another good result for the Magpies and it’s now 6 games undefeated with 4 clean sheets, and we’d be somewhat surprised to taste defeat in any of our last three games of the season.

We are hoping for another 9 points, to be quite honest.

deano spot on – the noise the atmosphere was just like back in the 70s without the threat of getting your heed kicked in – it was amazing under the stands after the game – police in riot gear, police on horse back, the noise was deafening, everyone milling around waiting for the unwashed to appear -just a hint of it all getting out of control – MAGIC!
Then KK comes on the telly in the bridge and the whole pub goes quiet – hanging on his every word – just like the old days!!!!

Quick question. Just wondered who is the big guy in the glasses who hangs around with Mike Ashley and also wears a Newcastle top? Anyone know his name or what his job is?

And no I don’t mean Chris Mort.

What an atmosphere today, loudest game i’ve been to since KK’s 1st spell.

Thought having that singer who carried the Newcastle flag across the pitch towards the mackems whilst we all joined in with him singing the Blaydon races was magic, set the tone for the day.

Cant wait for next derby day!!

Geremi needs to work on his free kick delivery. His pass to owen was sublime but his corners and free kicks simply not good enough. A new taker needs to be on the list for summer buys

It was a great win , just wish Oba would learn to chip a ball instead of trying to get it through people. Several times this season he has missed a goal that way, a simple chip over the goalie would have been a better option. I think Oba deserved a goal, and IMHO is getting better game by game, but not every shot on goal has to be a pile driver, even if it goes in off your knee it counts, more range please Oba.
