Sunderland Players Had Faces Like Smacked Backsides

Steven Taylor did not want to leave the field after the 2-0 victory at St James’ Park as he soaked up the atmosphere which is unique and magnificent at Newcastle. He also thought the Sunderland players had faces like smacked backsides, which is an interesting simile to say the least.

Steven Taylor – soaked up the atmosphere at St. James’ Park yesterday

But the Evening Chronicle is reporting today that young Taylor was showered and changed in a flash, and then he spoke immediately to the Chronicle after the game:

“There was no better feeling on the final whistle than seeing the Sunderland players with faces like smacked backsides.”

“We were disappointed at the Stadium of Light, as we didn’t get the result we wanted there, and this win was for the fans.”

“The first goal took the sting out of it, and relaxed us a bit, and I think they were dead and buried after the second goal. We were able to keep the ball a bit more.”

“I think it was better than the 3-2 win two seasons ago. I think it meant more to everybody because of the season we’ve had so far.” “The fans deserved that, and it was great to send them home happy.”

The England Under-21 skipper who had another very solid game alongside Abdoulaye Faye, continued:

“When we walked out, the first thing I noticed was the fans holding up the black and white cards. The lads looked around and thought ‘wow’.”

“There was no way we wanted to disappoint the fans, and we were so happy to put on a good show for them. I thought everyone did themselves credit.”

“I wish I had scored – that would have been the icing on the cake – but I’ll take the three points. It was the biggest game of the season for us.” “The gaffer did give a little team-talk, but the players knew how much it meant.”

By Kevin Keegan’s own admission Newcastle were only at 50%-60% of their capabilities yesterday. That was going forward, but in defense Newcastle looked extremely solid, especially in the second half, when Sunderland had woken up just a bit.

The change in the way the defense is playing under Keegan is just amazing, and dare we say it, they looked very good yesterday.

Roll on next season – that’s for sure.    😀

Faye was very highly rated at Bolton, alot of their fans were more devastated when he left than when Ben Haim did.

I always said that Faye was the reason Ben Haim looked so good last season and people always disagreed with me. Most probably agree now

Mackems always look like that… they are inbread mofos

Maybe the influence of chris houghton is paying dividends for the defence, certainly look a tighter unit or maybe the fact that we are playing with a proper LB. baye for me was outstanding again yesterday

Indeed we do not mention it a lot, but the work Chris Houghton is delivering with our back 4 is also fantastic. Lots of credit to the guy. They look completely different than when he arrived a couple of months ago.

Taylor is playing very solid and he and Abdou are forming a very good pair at the back. It will be very hard for others to come back (Cacapa) or to enter the team (Edgar).

Ben Haim I’m not impressed by him, and I would be a little bit disappointed if they went after him in the summer.

Excellent result this weekend for us if not a vintage performance!! I thought Owen was fantastic not just for the goals he scored but also his movement and general play. Wasn’t Habib Beye also brilliant though? Up and down the wing much like fullbacks of the previous Keegan era. I am looking forward to the summer to see what KK does with the squad and that will tell us what we can expect for the season ahead.
All aboard the toon bus – It’s going places!!!

PS – On a totally random note and because people on these boards have helped me loads in the past I thought I would be ok to ask. Whilst watching the match my tv proved how crap it was by breaking so I needed to go to another room to watch but does anybody know where I can get a new tv at amazingly low price like on the net or something?
    Any help appreciated

Beye IS player of the season!..
    …Faye has been excellent also!..
…Closely followed by: Owen, Martins, Harper, Enrique, Taylor…& big respect to Butt, Geremi & Barton for coming thru against all the odds!..
    …What d’you lot reckon?..

That was solid first-half in my opinion….but Geremi was giving the ball away a tad too much.
Jose Enrique wasn’t that bad…but he shouldn’t dwell on the ball too much. Beye,Taylor and Faye were awesome. Nicky Butt had a good match as well. And of course, Owen put in another vintage performance…although that penalty was not well-taken, but at least it went in.
Let’s finish this season strong….and look forward to next season!!! The revolution starts here!!
    Howay the Lads!

Surely our Captain has played as well as Beye….especially with him having the captains role, a change of position and coming back from his injury spells.

Everyones had a big turnaround, but I’m looking at our captain for inspiration to that on top of Keegan and Hughton.

Eto wants to win trophies thats why hes thinking of leaving Barca, we havnt won in 40 years so doubt thats gona happen. Anyway, we have Michael and Owen.
What we need is on outlet for Butt to pass to…. (where Owen is playing now)… a Riquelme or Totti style player.
Then Barton and Germemi are the workhorses like Clark and Bracewell were but we need our new Rob Lee.

Aye Mr T, but Beye hasn’t put a foot or word or attitude wrong since he got here!..He’s just got on with the job & endeared himself to the Geordie public!..
    …A TRUE Professional!..

…Totally agree with what y’said about Owen like,
but it would be dead kool for an overseas player to get it, for a change!..
…Most take a season or so to settle in, but he’s been class from the get go!..

Punk Skunk, I can’t argue with you in fairness. Beye is an animal….a professional animal!!! lol

The points you raise about Beye though (on a slightly unrelated note) is the reason Harper should be first choice and Shay Given should be second choice (or sold on!) cos Harper is nothing but a pro, and Given spits his dummy out when he’s not first choice. I’m not doubting his abilities, but Harps is just as good as well.

On another unrelated note, who the hell are Sunderland?!?!

    Mr T, agree 101% mate!..
…I reckon there’s gonna be a lot more dummy spitting in the near future aswell…’cos i defo wouldn’t be dropping Harper any time soon, he’s having a blinding season!..I love Shay also, but Harper seems to instill confidence into the defense…Maybe he just gets on with this defense better or something…But it’s been noticeable this season!..
    …Big thanx to Steve!..

…& yea, who the hell are sun’lun?..

Perhaps Tottenham’s loss was our gain. The defense has been solid since Chris Hughton has arrived. A coincidence? I think he deserves some of the credit, but really the switch to a 4-3-3 is what has taken the pressure of the back four. Any back four is going to have difficulties if they are under constant pressure, which was the case before we switched.

and one other thing…is it not amazing how we no longer hear all of the Nicky Butt bashing going on around here? Has he not been outstanding for us this year?

point to raise, is anyone aware that if we win or draw at West Ham with Owen scoring a goal or two, KK is in a strong position to recieve Manager of the Month, and Owen is in a strong position to recieve Player of the Month. We can hope eh

I hope as soon as the negotions are closed and owen has signed a new deal, that mort turns his attentions to offering TAYLOR a new deal .He deserves a better deal and we need to keep this defence intact .This is a real defence and will improve next season .
