Steve Harper has today been singing the praises of Newcastle’s new captain and derby hero Michael Owen.

Steve Harper talked about Michael Owen today:
“Michael is a fantastic captain,†“He’s played nearly 90 times for England, he’s a top international player and everyone looks up to him.â€â€œHe’s played for Liverpool and Real Madrid and he’s a top, top proven goal-scorer.†“
He showed that again against Sunderland. Since we’ve started the huddle, he says his little bit and it gets everyone going, he’s leading by example.â€
“He’s had a fantastic career so far, but if he can play in that position and he’s shown it’s not going to affect his goal-scoring ratio, hopefully he can lead this club for the foreseeable future.â€
Harper knows Michael is on board with Keegan’s grand plan to bring trophies back to St James’ Park and thinks that with Michael in the team, the club will be good enough to bring a trophy to the club for the first time since Bobby Moncur did that with the Fairs Cup in 1969. A game we were at and will never forget.
Steve Harper continued:
“Michael knows and we all know what it would do to this club if we were to win a trophy. That’s the aim, that’s what Kevin wants to do in his time here.”
“That’s what Michael wants to do, that’s what we all want to do, because we know how the 1969 team (which won the Fairs Cup) are still talked about,â€â€œIt’s going to be the 40th anniversary next year of us winning the Fairs Cup and what a time it would be to put another bit of silverware in the cabinet.”
“Everyone heard what the atmosphere was like just from winning a derby match, but if we actually won a trophy you wouldn’t be able to move in the city.â€
If Newcastle do win a trophy it will be celebrated around the country and even around the world, because most fans are aware of Newcastle’s plight as far as trophies, or the lack of them, is concerned. And they will join in the celebrations of the Geordie Nation everywhere.

after how great the atmosphere was in the stadium and going into town afterwards and having to que for 30mins to get into sam jacks imagine what it would be like if we won some silverware!!!
the only reason they do the huddle is so that MO can speak to them because if they dont reach down to him he would need a stepladder on some of the players…
this is good because previously we have had a very short team they are slowly getting bigger

When we were 1-0 down at Birmingham and freefalling towards relegation, Owen stepped up the plate and has continued to pull us away to safety.
God knows what kind of trouble we would be in right now without his key goals over these critical games.
People have criticised his wages and injuries, but what he’s done for us since KK has taken over has been priceless.
Shearer always said that to get the best out of Owen you need to make him feel like he’s the main man. Which is exactly what KK did by making him both the captain and playmaker. And now we are all reaping the benefits.

just hopes he doesn’t get fatigued by playing this new role and gets new injuries next season.
we cannot use him there next season indefinitely, that’s what i feel.
it shud be just one in a box of repertoire for keegan.
we shall see how we do against chelsea.

The good thing about using Owen there though is that he’s not going flat out after balls all the time, keeping his hamstrings/thighs in check a bit. And the fact he’s playing so well there, ghosting into the box late, he is a master of movement.
