Newcastle In For Top Croation Midfielder

There is some very interesting news today that Newcastle have flown Croation midfielder Luka Modrić into Newcastle, and already talked to him about a possible move to Newcastle United in the summer.

Luka Modric – Newcastle have already made their move

The news is that Modric and representatives from his club, Dinamo Zagreb were flown into Newcastle recently by private jet to negotiate the sale of Luka Modric. Reports in Zagreb today suggest they arrived at midday and were back home by 6:40pm.

The transfer window doesn’t open until five or six weeks time and Newcastle will be facing stiff competition from Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and even Barcelona, but reports in Zagreb suggest Newcastle are the club that are in the lead for his signature.

Dinamo Zagreb have been told the signing of Michael Owen’s contract is the Tyneside club’s first priority, and expect Modric’s signature to be their second priority, and hope to complete the signing quickly.

We cannot say this is a true report but there’s an awful lot of detail in the report, that was translated from local reports in Zagreb.

Silvio Maric was transferred to Newcastle from Dinamo in early 1999, when Ruud Gullit was manager at Newcastle, so there are good existing relationships between the clubs, even though Silvio was hardly a success on Tyneside.

It will be important for Newcastle to move very quickly for any top players on their list, because they are at something of a disadvantage with not being able to provide European Football next season.

Luka has played for Dinamo Zagreb 85 times and scored 25 goals since 2005, and has played 24 times for Croatia and scored 3 goals. But he is still just 22 years old and stands just under 5’9″ in height.

We think Luka is exactly the type of player we need at the club – he’s a top class player, there’s no doubt about that.

The question is whether we can get him to the club, in the face of competition from teams that can offer him European competition next season.

Comments welcome.

I saw him once and, sorry guys for getting back bad memories, that was at Wembley 😉 . And I thought he was superb, very skillful player and if indeed the report is true, the club might book a first succes during the upcoming window.

Still hope that they go after Arshavin as well, because today I read (BBC gossip) that Everton will move for him. It would be really a shame if the club did not try to go after Andrei.

Arshavin and Modric would be excellent signings! That would give us a much improved midfield!

Id have Modric over Arshavin but i wouldnt mind either.

Modric is just the player we need, a playmaker with pace, skills, energy and goals! Arshavin isnt as good a PLAYMAKER as Modric.

Great midfielder and would do very well at Newcastle, however, why would he sign for us if another top team come in for him that can offer him European football next season?

Btw, anyone know how Barton got on at court today?

because the reports probably issue from an article from yesterday, it’s just taken this long to filter through to the english sites.

    if it’s true of course.

People call us deluded for thinking ee can sign people like this but when they move to a big club (most) at a young age like this it doesnt do them good + dont know if many big clubs are properly, firmly interested because he isnt from such a strong league, so it is a huge gamble with them. Coming to us:
    Gets to be with Viduka.
Plays regularly in the best league in the world.
Plays n a great stadium with great fans.
Learns well and in a great style.
We can offer him more in wages and a bigger transfer fee to his club than similar clubs like spurs (they have a salary cap).

    Telegraph 28/12/2007
Sven-Goran Eriksson is set to bing Luca Modric to Man City after agreeing to pay 20 million for the Croatia International.
City are expected to complete the deal as soon as the transfer window opens in January.

I hope the report that he was in toon is true but until he is pictured in a black and white shirt on the turf at st james then i remain unconvinced.

And for this being true… Us signing Modric, Ronaldinho or even Messi wouldnt be as much as a shock as West Ham signing Macherano and Tevez ffs…

we can always outbid man city , they cant fill their stadium .

valle , modrik alongside messi or rhonaldino ?
this is croatia zagreb we are talking about here, you can hardly put modrik along side those types of players , not yet anyway .

The date’s not the point. All I’m saying is that the story has been around for a while. The president of Dinamo Zagreb was in London to discuss a deal with Chelsea not so long ago. Hey I would love it if the transfer took place just don’t get too excited.

Martin’s we also had an article like that in january saying the exact same thing. Their president was in town. Man City are rubbish i do not know where anyone got the illusion they are now big or good. I actually couldnt believe people thinking they’d get into europe, i said from the start they arent good enough. Without sven coming in they would have been lucky not to be in the bottom 15 or so.

Yeah sure! we will sign both Modric and Arshevin, love to believe it except what I have been hearing is Riise and Gardner, two rejects
one who cant even make the bench at Everton.the other just scored for Chelsea.
Not exactly my idea of ambitious buying, hope its the two midfielders.
