Oba’s Friends Want Him At Big Four Club

There is news again today that Oba Martins may sign an extended contract at Newcastle United.

Oba Martins – guess who just scored!
Oba by Kevin Keegan’s own words is a one off, and you just never know what he’s going to do, but he’s an exciting player to watch.

But it seems like his friends back in Nigeria want him to play for a big four club.

Oba said:

“In Nigeria they are calling me, they are asking if I will sign a new contract,” “They say I should just go away, there are a lot of better teams.”

“But they don’t understand; if you feel passion for a team, even if they have problems you have to help them out. For now I’m still playing here. For now.”

“They say this because I miss playing Champions League as well, but a lot of players here at Newcastle have played Champions League. It’s not only me.”

“We’re here now, we have to deal with it and try to help each other. That’s the way I’m thinking.”

Well, that doesn’t sound too convincing to us, he’s staying for now. But we think Chris Mort will try to keep Oba at the club for a few more seasons, and we’ll just have to hope that Kevin’s magic starts to pay off next season, when we can at least finish much much higher in the league.

But most of the Newcastle players believe they are part of something big that’s brewing at Newcastle, and it’s not the beer. It’s because that maestro Kevin Keegan is back, and he’s already showing that the team can play well, week in week out, and he’s brought no new players in yet.

Roll on the last 3 games of the season and we just cannot wait for next season to start.

And we’re sure that goes for Oba too.

They are NOT your real friends Oba. Your real friends are your toon army fans and your team-mates. Why go to one of the Gang of Four when in a season or two you can be playing for the top team in Britain? Sign up for a new contract and wear the black and white stripes on the pitches of Europe with us.

If he makes like a tree and leaves (poor joke i know, sorry) then he may be subject to another assassination attempt! (the first being about as likely to have happened as the next!)

there is little point in him joining the top4, he plays regularly here, he gets (or is about to get) paid very good complared to most players, he’s a fans fave here… at any of the top4 he will be a background player, bit-part, probably criticized for not scoring 30 goals a season… but not here, because we know his qualities and respect the great attributes he brings to the team…

if oba would just be a little unselfish we would score a lot more goals.

he always gets in good crossing, passing positions on that left side but then he goes for goal from a narrow angle…..

    team play Oba, team play!!

Well that should be a wake up call for Ashley and Mort to start investing in top players.Players who can help us break into top 4.Trust me…if we dont qualify in UEFA Cup next season and in Champions League the season after we’ll difinetly lose Martins.

yeah ur right toonking, if oba passed on some occasions rather than shoot we would get more goals

ive noticed that he never passes forward only backwards so that the person he passes it to can make a pass to him and he gets another chance, nothing wrong with this but be a team orientated player.

like rooney tevez and ronaldo where they always look for a pass if the shot is not easy.

WSQ, maybe Oba isnt good enough right now, but he is young and under the right guidance e.g. Ferguson or Wenger, he would be a quality player and definitely good enough for the top four.

If Kuyt, Kalou, Tevez etc are good enough for the top 4 then Martins is also.

Do you know what, I like Oba’s comments. Too often you hear the “I’m off if the manager/chairman/owner doesn’t get us into the Champions’ League” as if the player has no influence over or impact on that happening. Oba seems to be saying “Of course I want to play in European competitions, but I’m willing to help make Newcastle the team I play in them with. I’m one of the players who have got us in our current situation and I need to help improve it.”

Coupled with which, if we turn into a team Birmingham or Wigan or the one supported by the unwashed masses down the road and do nothing but fight for survival each year, I’d want to be off in the end. But we appear to have an owner, chairman, behind-the-scenes set up and manager all of whom have realistic ambition and genuine focused drive to get us back into Europe. So maybe we shouldn’t worry too much about Oba and others leaving because, if they all think like Oba, we’ll soon be back facing the best teams in Europe and winning. Hears to another “Viva Asprilla!”-type dvd for our collections; “Olé Obafemi” perhaps as we stuff Real Madrid some time soon !

    Howay the lads!

Sometimes I think Oba is taken for granted by the club, his contract needs securing and it should be in line with Owens.

I thought Martins was a little selfish in the Sunderland game, but if you replay it a few times you can see that he didnt have a clear pass when he takes his shots, it is only when the ball hits the keeper that there is space to get to the other players, he is so fast sometimes you can think the space was there, when it wasnt, or even that the other players were in place when they were three strides away or behind defenders.

We have a problem with Martins, there are no players who pass at the same speed as him, he plays fast one touch if he has the opportunity, he has to keep standing waiting for other players to catch up, only Owen is on the same tempo now and then, but he cant keep pace with him so Martins ends up on his own.

I know I am a stuck record with this, but a fast striker is needed such as Djibril Cisse, to replace Martins if he is injured or to link with him at the same pace, still keeping Owen just behind as he can be relied upon to be in a good position or provide a link (as well as keeping Viduka), then we would have more variation, Martins would be more effective if he had a player as quick or quicker than him such as Cisse, that is why he and Zog linked up well as often they were the only two there.

In the Sunderland match they double marked Martins and Viduka which freed Owen and Gerami, we should never underestimate Martins value in our team even when he doesnt actually score, his prescence worries the opposition’s defence like no other player we curently have.

i feel he is still trying to prove himself to KK! this is why we see him shoot more often than pass! i think Oba wants to be the toast of the toon, but as it stands that would be Owen, Buttered with jam! thats a big shadow to be standing in! He is still young and will develop into a world class allrounded player in a few years. For now i think he is just trying to keep himself on the pitch for a full game!
