Chris Mort has said some encouraging words about Steven Taylor and the pending talks about an extended contract.

Steven Taylor - shoots just wide with brilliant acrobatic effort against Portsmouth
Newcastle Chairman Chris Mort has talked about Steven Taylor and his contract:
“Steven Taylor is a young and very promising defender.â€
“We would like him to stay at the club long term.â€â€œWe will sit down with Steven and his father and hopefully work something out.â€
Taylor has had his father Alf handle his contract talks with the club up till now, but news today that he has engaged London-based agent Leon Angel, who represents many other top players.
Steven still has a year left on his current contract, and of course was offered a new deal early last September but it was turned down flat by his father.
We think Steven has proved once again, since Keegan arrived, that he is a promising local youngster, and will only get better. We’d be a lot happier if he was tied down to a long term contract at the club.
Taylor is also more than positive about Newcastle’s future, so along with Michael Owen and Oba Martins we’d like to see Steven sign a new deal at the club.
Quite honestly the sooner the better – let’s ensure we sign up our good players already at the club for extended stays on Tyneside.

About time. Where does his dad come from? So we may get some more out of Steve after all. We must admit the lad wants to stay at NUFC and I think he will develop under KK. The fact that he has got a new agent reveals a lot.

Taylor is a decent defender and it would be a waste not to sign him up again

Checked on this Angel bloke. Apparently in some footballing quarters he is regarded as being divisive, and an a***hole. He works for some pukka accountants firm as well - not just as a FIFA registered agent. If other views are to be gone by Steve’s contract negotiations are now set to take even longer with Angel aboard.Hope Taylor has not jumped out of the frying pan into the fire.

Just what qualifies his Dad to be his agent? If I were a player I wouldn’t expect my Dad to do it - I’d want someone who was experienced in being an agent. Professional club directors want to deal with professional agents - not amateurs. And if ST had any sense - as he now seems to have realised - he needs a pro to protect and promote his interests. I suspect the delay is about his Dad’s approach - remember it was he who caused ill-feeling last year when he shot his mouth off in the press in a botched attempt to put pressure on the club. It might have all been sorted by now had it not been for that - and the change of manager of course. Bottom line - we want to keep ST!

his dad is a meddler, i have had dealings with him in the past, above board obviously but he expects because big taylor is his son he gets things for free…
as in the time he went into jct600 and demanded free car hahaha

As a huge fan of Steve and as I have said on so many previous occasions, the sooner we have Tayls signed up, the happier I will be.
To his critics I will admit that he still has loads to learn, but the basics are there for us to produce an extremely talented home grown central defender who can go on to captain both club and country.
I hope if he is getting a new agent, that this guy can sort something out that is satisfactory for all parties concerned.

yip ive no doubt we’ll give him a new contract eventually just dont see what is taking so long.
of people needing new contracts:
oba - dont like how he always goes staright downt he tunnel after hes been taken off but still gr8 player. looks like wer gettin him signed up so thts very good news.
owen - playing with so much more heart, passion and committment and looks a lot more interested now. seems to be enjoying his new role and hes playing well. agen sign him up asap.
taylor - dont know why its taken so long for his contract. oh ii his dad.. well anyways just give him a decent contract to keep him here him and faye have looked good at the back recently.
for me its new contracts - taylor, oba, owen, maybe some of the older players
out - zog, emre if he doesnt solve injury problems, carr, rozehnal, ameobi, ramage, diatta
in - who knows some good quality players. perferably we need a RM, LM to replace zog, RB & LB for backup to beye nd enrique, 2 CM’s and 1 CB id say.
dont expect us to sign them all and therefore think these are places we need to build up over the years hopefully.

I’m sure Taylor fully intends on signing a new contract. He grew up during Keegan’s best time at the club and I’m sure now KK is back he has every intention of staying here.
Like Steve Howey before him I can see him being a local lad who’ll play for the club for many years.

Keegan shouldn’t really be taking all the praise, Chris Hughton should as well IMO anyway fella’s. I hope he signs on and is the player he always promised, gotta prefer local talent!

Couldn’t really give at oss who his agent is. His dad may not have any real qualifications to be an agent, but at least he is somebody that has Taylor’s best interests at heart, and that he can trust.
I just hope that the new agent will speak to the press for Wor Stevie, so he can stop doing it himself. He does way too much of it at the moment.

Glad to see him potentially dealing through a professional and slightly more independent agent. I’ve always been concerned about his father doing the negotiations - a father is unlikely to have a realistic assessment of precisely where Taylor comes in the talent/potential stakes.

The club could have easily dealt with Steve’s dad. Now an agent is involved, you can guarantee that half the club’s in the Premiership will be contacted to better NUFC’s offer.

Taylor’s dad has been asking for 52 grand a week for his boy…..now that’s laughable. A good player he might be, but he’s not worth that amount.
He’s on 8 grand a week at the moment.
16 Mr T // Apr 23, 2008 at 16:35
8 Grand? The poor bastard!!!

hmm it was about a year ago, maybe a lil bit more, i was in the garage with pappa
tayls sat there like a school boy who had his arse smacked
i think he was unimpressed by his dads antics

Taylor himself seems like a decent lad and I don’t know about his dad though but at work the mackems who I work with hate taylor for what he said about them having faces like smacked backsides and he loved it that was a classic they are going to give him some greif down there next season I don’t think that wil bother him

Glad to see that Chris Mort is making all the right noises as regards signing up Taylor and Owen on new contracts. If we add the likes of Martins to that list, whilst extending Beye’s contract, Chris Mort will have certainly earned his corn. Over the coming weeks, we will see if it is just as easily said as it is done.

I thinks he is worth 40 to 50k. He’ll be offered in that realm by other bigger clubs but would only make the bench you can guarantee.
22 Scott H11 // Apr 24, 2008 at 20:42
I never doubted taylor wouldnt sign another contract and it wouldnt suprise me if he ended his career here. Perhaps one day we’ll be able to go for a pint in taylors wine bar at the ground !
