Chris Mort has been talking about Michael Owen in glowing terms today.
Chris Mort – so impressed with Michael Owen
Mort talked to the Newcastle Journal today:
“We hope Michael will be around for a long time. He has been very impressive this season, not just in terms of the goals he has scored, but also in the influence he has had on the dressing room and how hard he has worked for the team.â€
“I’ve seen the statistics and the amount of ground he covers in each game is remarkable. He is clearly somebody who is very important to us as a club and we believe he wants to stay with us as well.â€
“He was very unlucky with injuries when he first came to Newcastle, but he has proved his value to the side now that he is over those problems.â€
“It isn’t just the chances he is creating and the goals he is scoring, he has had a very positive impact on the team and the dressing room as a captain as well and that’s been just as important to us and the manager.†“He has been a really important figure and has had a big part to play as results have improved.â€
“Of course we want to keep Michael and we will be sitting down with his representatives soon to discuss a new contract with him. That will be the start of the process. However, we aren’t going to rush anything, there is plenty of time and we are both relaxed about the whole thing.â€
It seems from what Chris says that the actual signing of Michael is still several weeks off. It may be good to quicken up the negotiations to stop the gossip papers being mischievous and saying that Owen will be leaving the club, as they continually did last year.
Owen’s delight at what Kevin Keegan has in mind for the team now seems to be understandable, if we can sign Croatia’s Luka Modric, which we reported yesterday, and today’s papers are confirming is almost a done deal.
Who said Dennis Wise wasn’t a good (or should that be wise) appointment. 😀
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Owen signing an extended contract has to be a good move by the management, but at what cost?? He’s still one of the best at what he does but we all know how injury prone he is and he’s certainly getting no younger.
Hopefully, his injuries are behind him and next season will see him scoring 2o or so, which will fully justify his cost. A fully fit MO is an asset worth hanging on to.

Let’s just hope they continue to be as committed as they seem to be at the moment.
