Keegan Thinks Draw A Fair Result

April 26th, 2008 · 64 Comments

Kevin Keegan has admitted after the game this afternoon at West Ham that a draw was probably a fair result.

Kevin Keegan - fair result on today’s performance

Newcastle went two goals down after just over 20 minutes but battled back to be all square at half time. Oba Martins on 43 minutes scored his 10th goal of the season before Geremi headed the equalizer right on half-time.

Afterwards, Kevin gave his ideas on the game:

“It was a strange game.” “I was disappointed with the way we started the game and after 30 minutes I was thinking ‘What can I do?’.”

“Everyone was below par but I decided to leave it and hope that the experienced players could among the kids.” “It was a great goal by Oba Martins and then Geremi has got us level before half-time.”

“To be honest, before that I would have settled for a 2-0 defeat!” “But I said to them at half-time ‘We have not even started playing, yet we are level. Can you go and win it?’.”

“We had a couple of chances but so did they so the draw was probably the fair result.”

We’ll certainly need to be a lot sharper at the start of our next game against Chelsea a week on Monday at St. James’ Park.

It’s become a key game for Chelsea, who are now level with the Red Devils, after they beat them 2-1 earlier today at Stamford Bridge, with two goals from German captain Michael Ballack.

Maybe Kevin can do Ferguson a favor in that game. :D

Comments welcome.

Wish manure had beaten chelsea, that way chelsea would have practically nothing to play for when they come here, getting a bit worried now :S

  • 2 Callum // Apr 26, 2008 at 18:45

It’ll be a good test vs Chelsea but if im honest, i dont think we can win although i am hoping for a win, i just dont think we can get it :(

I’d love to be proven wrong tho :D

  • 3 Tripp // Apr 26, 2008 at 18:47

Jonny, it’ll be a great test. The stakes for us are low. If we don’t get a point, it’ll be disappointing, but our biggest test by far since we’ve turning things around. We’ll have to play MUCH better than we did today however, to have a chance at anything. I’m disappointed with today’s result, but the sign of a good side is getting points even when you suck. We missed Faye today, that’s for sure.

I’m happy with a point but many will probably slag our defence off and perhaps quite rightly as I heard they were terrible in the first half. Edgar’s in hospital with a bad head wound

  • 5 Callum // Apr 26, 2008 at 18:57

Edgar played well in the second half, he just had a slow start again, like vs Reading, but this time is costed him and us, but like i said he improved as the game went on as did our defence as they held strong in the second half :)

I was at game and a draw was fair. We were awful for 40 mins but somehow went in level. We were the better team in second half. Edgar was given a lesson by Ashton in first half ( we missed Faye)and Enrique was tormented by his winger. A rare poor game from him. Geremi had a stinker. Kept giving the ball away which could have cost us the game. We need more quality and pace in the midfield next season. Butt had a solid game but he and Geremi are too slow and static. We need a mobile ball winner and much more creation in the middle.

anyone got a sopcast adderess for the 2:15 showing on setanta for us yanks?

  • 8 Leo // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:23

i think we didnt deserve the points from what i heard, but to be fair to the lads we came back from 2-0 down and managed, we could quite easily folded like we would have done previously but now under keegan things are going in the right direction. if only we had signed modric but nevermind we will make some good signings im sure.

  • 9 daiv // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:30

We would have lost this game a couple of months ago by 3 or 4 goals. The team is much more resilient and luckier. But we still need more quality in midfield. Butt Barton and Geremi would not even by squad players for the top 4.

  • 10 spyro // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:31

draw was not a fair result, we deserved nothing from today, was a poor performance and we need to fix up for our next game

  • 11 Scott H11 // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:33

Edgar was knocked unconscious and later, received 7 stitches, when he came round he looked up at Harper who said ” phwoarh what a mess”. I hope he’s not used as a scapegoat, After all the kid is only 20 and never knows if he’ll be playing hours before a game and in what position so I hope the lads wont be too hard on him

Anyone know where I can see the goals???

  • 15 Tripp // Apr 26, 2008 at 20:54

Edgar as a tough job. CB is the toughest position to just jump into. When you cock it up you concede a goal. We missed Faye today. Credit to Edgar for picking up and moving on. Instead of feeling sorry for himself he pushed on and didn’t let Ashton get him a second time.

  • 16 Tripp // Apr 26, 2008 at 20:54

AltaBatalJoneN, see the FT results post. Someone has a goalcentre link, it’s the first comment to that post.

  • 17 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 21:12

To everyone who reads this comment, remember it WHEN it happens……

Newcastle United WILL sign Rafael Van Der Vaart.

    Keep the Faith!

  • 18 ende // Apr 26, 2008 at 21:15

Im predicting a 1-1 draw vs Chelsea.

  • 19 toon91 // Apr 26, 2008 at 21:34

i wish i was as optimistic as you ronaldeano.

maybe we should raid hsv for kompany aswell while we are there

  • 20 sweendogg007 // Apr 26, 2008 at 21:56

Lads top 4 rejects aren’t bad b’cos when we get them they have sumthing to prove.

Buying foriegners are risky, would you pay more 4 a person u haven’t heard b4 the hype than Owen

  • 21 sweendogg007 // Apr 26, 2008 at 21:57

We will beat Chelsea and we will beat a good Chelsea side not like the past where they put on their reserve team

I can’t wait b’cos this will show that next season we mean business

  • 22 AltaBatalJoneN // Apr 26, 2008 at 22:00

    Thx Tripp..

  • 23 fernando // Apr 27, 2008 at 0:08

Edgar was a our Achilles heel today, 2 soft goals but they were well taken credit West Ham. If it was Faye, Ashton wouldn’t have had an easy turn.

Atleast now we know Edgar is tried and tested, it’s apparent he needs to go out and games under his belt on loan (experience and confidence is lacking).

If i was manager I would’ve put him on RB though. Less pressure, the same way Taylor started gaining confidence there.

Happy with the 1 point, but then again we never got going. Michael Owen hardly got a mention, viduka too.

Mordic has made the wrong choice, nevermind we will sign a better player, don’t worry lads.

  • 24 fernando // Apr 27, 2008 at 0:13

Don’t know how R. Van Der Vaart would fit into the team. Seen him play, he plays more like a striker.

  • 25 moomfan // Apr 27, 2008 at 2:26

what did i say in a few articles ago? i knew the #@%& media were shooting us down with the publication on modric coming to newcastle. those dirty b-tards have never given newcastle the respect and proper coverage in the press. although i know and believe we were not going for gold with modric, i’m slightly disappointed the press got that one off on us. as for tot-none, as bilic stated… newcastle are more likely to win the title than they are. i hold no grudges on tot-none for their tranfer endeavers, i just simply do not understand why they are even spoken about in the same league as newcastle. i remember they went to america about 4 years ago and lost to dc united-who? oh, yeah…exactly why would anyone vomit their name as though they are a club to rekon with. remember what kev said he will decide who comes and goes, not the bloody media.

  • 26 GloryMagpie // Apr 27, 2008 at 3:15

Just like what Keegan has said, i will settle for a draw. Got to give credit for the great comeback. Edgar did well after the earlier mistake he had made. Just look at the manu goal, even a world class defender like carvlho made a critical mistake that lead to rooney’s goal. Edgar will learn from his mistake.

ohhh anyway where are u wsq? HA HA HA
arent u gonna be sad when we draw. U were so happy that we were outplayed in the 1st 30 min. _|_

  • 27 ScottyT // Apr 27, 2008 at 3:15

didnt see the game but didnt seem like we played very well at all. gr8 to see us come back from 2 down though unlike earlier in the season where once we conceded we collapsed.

also nice to see motd giving us a very detailed analysis of our match… jesus no word on it at all and decided to completely ignore edgars injury whilst commenting on ljungbergs. same ol media pr1cks eh

anotha thing.. how the fk hv spurs got so much money? they just seem to buy anyone and everyone for any amount of money they like. i.e. berba 10-12m or w.e, bent 16m, hutton, woodgate, gilberto, modric… them all cost a fortune they just seem to have an unlimited budget much like chelsea. makes me sick.

If Spurs continue to splash the cash like this they’ll surely be Leeds mkII…only Chelsea can spend like that continually because their chairman is a Russian oil barron mobster. Maybe Madrid and Man Utd can too.

Oh, and knock off the arguing you lot. I was doing the same thing with people no longer than a month ago and in the end it’s not worth it as it’s not as much of a laugh as you can get trolling console fanboys etc so just leave it.

    Beye—Taylor—–Metzelder—Bridge
    Milner—Emre—-Moutinho—Boussoufa
    ———Martins—Owen————–

Subs: Harper, Edgar, Faye, Butt, Barton,LuaLua, Carroll

Looks good and with that team, I really expect us to get into UEFA Cup

Like I said before, who protects the back four there?

  • 47 yet_another_indian_toon // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:41

The dream team doesnt have ronaldo, tevez? Cmon guys, if you dream, dream big.

am resigned to the fact that the same team(-Geremi || Butt) will start the next season. Unless the current crop of players perform to their fullest potential, there is no hope of signing more talented blokes.

  • 48 michael // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:45

Not that realistic Doug, three of those players don’t even play for us.

  • 49 michael // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:52

Plus if you ever watch a Newcastle United game you’ll release that Emre is a big steaming pile of faeces. Probably only slightly worse than Alan Smith. I’d like to see him Stephen Carr and Ca-crapa and Pose-nhal shipped out in the summer. Don’t think we’ll see Smiffy go, unlike Ameobi (Also blessed with little footballing talent) at least he does try.
I do expect to hear of lots of youngsters being signed (We got four in Janurary, is that right?)
And it would be nice to sign three players who would walk into the starting eleven, but it’s difficult to find that sort of talent rather than over hyped drivvel in the shape of Modric.
I was much more gutted when we lost Woody to the Spurs.

  • 50 51times // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:06

michael, you said you don’t watch much football outside of England, so how would you know Modric is over hyped drivvel?

Woodgate is injured all the time too…like a less talented Metzelder.

Been thinking alot about which players we can REALISTICALLY get.

Well couple of things that Keegan said he wanted was PREM experience.

I think Few Players that fit the bill are:

Jermaine Pennant - He has been playing so well, and he shines a bit at liverpool who have a great team, so i do think in Our team he would play brilliant. He plays JUST how keegan would want: DIRECT, ATTTACKING and he is good with his feet. He sets up ALOT of goals.

We could have him on Right wing and James Milner on Left wing.

    That Sounds Good.

    THEN…

As a LB we could get Shorey, ESPECIALLLY ig Reading get relegated.

Him and Enrique can fight it out. Shorey is Also and Attacking LB SOOOOO could be used more as a Wing Back. Nice and Attacking again.

Then maybe for a bit more of a Creative Midfielder is Downing!!!

He is so good to watch and is TOOOOO good for Middlesborough.

I think all of these are Reasonanble choices BUT would DEFINATLY improve our squad ALOT!!!!!!!

    WAT U ALL THINK????????

    ——Given——–
    Beye–Taylor–Faye–Shorey
    Pennant–Downing–Milner
    ———Owen———–
    —-Viduka—Martins—–

Downing is a left winger, never seen him play in the middle.

  • 54 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:28

we should seriously target arshavin, then we should target VdV Or diego, and then veloso. but hey what do i know, even if we were close to getting them anyway we would let them slip from our grasp.

  • 55 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:37

midjew. why not add boumsong, bramble and ameobi to that list and wer probably win the league.

  • 56 51times // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:40

Arshavan on the left, VdV or Diego in the middle as our playmaker/attacking midfielder and veloso as our dm, possibly to be rotated with Butt?

Problem is I don’t see VdV or Diego coming here at all.

  • 57 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:44

51 times, are you like me still feeling sorry for yourself about the modric deal?

  • 58 Whitt // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:48

I for one am SO excited that Chelsea won and have something to play for. we have been playing well but a lot of our performances have been against relegation fodder or teams that have nothing to play for. Chelsea is in a must-win situation, and i for one would want it no other way. i think we stuff ‘em and send a message to anyone who doesn’t take us serious for next year. and if not, then we know exactly where we stand.

  • 59 51times // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:52

I think everybody saw how excited ourselves and Tom_Toon were about the news. When I saw that the Yids got him my stomach felt like a stone. But I’ve gotten over it now, I do think that the price is a bit much for someone not proven in the PL. Just try to move on and and hope we can get some quality in this summer.

  • 60 Hadji // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:56

Guys i know that Modric scenario was a small blow for us but we can still attract big names. There is a lot of potential out there but the problem is that KK’ fully focused on Premiership players.
    German Denis,Radomel Falcao,Pablo Ledesma,Guilermo Ochoa,Renato Augusto etc.
I would love to add some South American flavour to our team for next season.

  • 61 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:59

but i dont see the realistic qaulity we could add,i would love to see royston drenthe, but play him the way holland did in the under 21’s in th dm role, he was like edgar davids. i would also love either vdv or diego, mat lucho gonzales and defo moutinho. i suppose know its just a waiting game isnt it, the worst thing for us this year is that its the euros and everyone will be on the prowl, also any tom, dick or harry could have a good tournament, look at the last one wasnt baros top scorer and was linked to real madrid for 15 million?

  • 62 Gooderz // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:25

Keegan hasn’t ruled out South American players, he’s just wary of them. They don’t have experience of the English game, often lack the strength to succeed and many already have hefty price tags placed on them (not to mention company ownerships dotted about).

I think Keegan’s list will focus on those with the experience he wants so that they can make an immediate impact for us. If these players aren’t available then they’ll look towards Europe, ideally to more similar leagues to ours, to again reduce the bedding in period.

When he has the squad more or less where he wants he may then look to sign ‘one or two cheap players’ I believe I read somewhere. Should these players make it then we’ll be laughing, and if they don’t then we won’t lose out too much. So that means we won’t be signing anyone like Lulinha in a hurry, who would already cost over £20m.

Thaigo Neves wouldn’t be a bad bet. He’s a bit like Emre (regards passing) meets Laurent Robert (regards shooting) and built well enough to not get swamped by players over here. Although he’d still fetch a good fee, at 23, he should have the maturity to cope with a move to Europe, as well as having many years still to flourish.

  • 63 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:48

guys i just read some more comments from the Dinamo side of our negotiations. It just seems as though they were trying to push their luck with us and they openly admit they were trying to cause a bidding war. It would seem our back room staff refused to be held to ransom (if that is the right phrase) and we simply said something like, “that is our final offer, we aint no bitches, take it or leave it!” lol. which is fair enough. However, i do wish we upped the bid about 2 or 3 million just so Tottenham would have had to spend more. Sick of being the pathetic little brother of Arsenal they are trying their best to replicate what Chelsea did when Abramovic came. I hope they fail like they always do.

  • 64 51times // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:51

They don’t have the money for that, they’ll go under if they try to do this again.

That’d be hilarious…Spurs in league 1, I can see it now.
