Modric Opts for Tottenham Over Newcastle

April 26th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 118 Comments

Newcastle have missed out on Croation star Luka Modric, who will sign for Spurs this morning for about £15.5M

Luka Modric
- ops for Spurs

The Barclays Premier League club have beaten competition from Newcastle United, Chelsea and Manchester City for the signature of the Croatia midfield player from Dynamo Zagreb. There are believed to be additional payments if the Croatia star meets certain targets.

The news is that Modric flew to London this morning to have a medical, discuss personal terms, and is expected to watch the match against Bolton Wanderers this afternoon.

The news reports suggest Newcastle offered about the same amount but Tottenham had said they would match Newcastle’s offer, whatever it was. But the Croatian star has chosen Tottenham. Once reason has to be that we cannot offer European football next season.

This is a huge blow to Newcastle fans’ hopes of attracting a player who is world class and will only get better.

We knew Tottenham were in the race all along, and we understand even yesterday that Newcastle were trying hard to close the deal. But it looks like the deal has been closed by Tottenham.

We’re extremely disappointed at this, and believe us - that’s a huge understatement.

We now need to wallop West Ham today.

Time to go edit your Youtube posts then innit, you spanner

  • 4 Bucks1985 // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:18

Gutted indeed… it feels like we’ve lost a match if I am perfectly honest… I know Modric is only one player and i’m sure that opportunities will arise to sign players of similar quality in the future… but I can’t help but feel like i’ve been kicked in the teeth.

There is one way to remedy that though… Bolton scrape a 1-0 victory against the Southern Scum and an away victory for the boys in black and white… justice shall be restored!!!

  • 5 D B F // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:19

im gettin a feeling of deja vu, totally gutted aout this, i think this proves that we are all gonna hav to lower our expetations of big players coming in, king kev obviously hast got as much pulling power as us lot think, first we cant attract woodgate now modric. probly our own fault for offering too low a fee in 1st place, we shud hav put a big offer in and the deal wud of been done a few days ago

  • 6 Graham // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:21

So he chose Spurs over us - lets just get on with it. We cant do anything about it now so lets be positive about the ones we will get in.

We only have ourselves to blame (the club not the fans) by employing sub standard managers and players in the past few years and falling way behind the likes of Spurs (yes there only just above us in the league but a year or 2 ahead in real terms).

Thankfully, gone are the days when we offer stiupid wages just to get players in and then find out what they’re really like (Boumsong, Marcellino etc etc etc)

We are building for the long term and that can only be a good thing…

Fancied a draw today but im gonna stick my neck out and say 2-1 to us - Oba & Viduka

  • 7 Chris // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:21

GUTTED! Well that’s brought me and most other Geordies back down to earth with a f*cking great thud!
I said yesterday when it went public that we had to act quickly if we had any chance of getting him.
I was really looking forward to the transfer window, but now it’s filling me with dread. How many times are we going to persue players for weeks on end only to be pipped at the post.
I wouldn’t have been surprised if it had of been a team in the top 4 but Spurs. For the sake of £3m we’ve missed out on a WORLD CLASS PLAYER!
How can we expect to get a player like Modric for £12m. Now we will persue our back up target who has half the talent and still cost us that!

  • 8 Ross G // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:22

Thats why we must never get our hopes up, as they are always dashed when was the last time we signed a player of such exciting prospect probably Ginola. Tottenham may have finished there jigsaw now with that left sided option filled with pure class, and his vision with Berbatov and Keane will be frightening. Unfortunetly there are few players of his age that come near him that are available at the moment. The capital and European football will always beat us. Now what, and to be honest we need to be moving quicker I know we did but we need to nail these players down asap. If we were outbid then shame on us

  • 9 Bob // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:22

Proves that we cannot attract top players anymore.

With the Intertoto in it’s last season, next season we MUST finish top six or face mediocrity for years to come.

  • 10 foz // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:22

    no european football… enough said

  • 11 Graham // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:23

DBF - thats the kind of business thats got us where we are today man. Wages are at 73% of turnover and we need European football to attract the top players. Something we will hopefully have this time next year.

  • 12 brian // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:23

    this is a shame

  • 13 tdt // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:24

    hmmm shite

  • 14 D B F // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:25

totally agree chris we seem to be the only team who takes an eternity to sign a player then another team will come in and do the deal within a day, we always go in with lower offers instd of just payin the right price str8 away and gettin the deal done and dusted b4 any other teams know about it, its all our own fault and i can honestly see it happenin a few more times in the close season

  • 15 D B F // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:27

yh graham but this player is without a doubt worth the every penny, and we also need to hav top players in the squad to get into europe dont we. and by the way it wasnt business lyk tht tht got us where we are, we bought POOR players for big money, buying a TOP QUALITY player for big money is how u get success, lets face it this guy isnt gonna turn into another boumgsong type flop is he

  • 16 Davies // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:29

Let’s not get carried away, he’s only one player.

Yes, it would have been nice to sign him, but that’s life. Perhaps next season when he’s sick of getting whipped by us, he’ll change his mind. It’s been a while since Tottenham beat us after all.

I don’t htink Keegan has lost any of his magnetism. Anybody who knows who he is, what happened last time he managed here and what he’s accomplished since he came back, cannot possibly overlook the lure of such an ambitious manager.

And it’s not just Keegan, Newcastle United have a lot more to offer than most clubs in terms of money, facilities and the adoration of an entire city.

Good players will come, so let’s not get too down in the mouth about Modric. He won’t be our first big signing of the season, so what. I’m more interested in who WILL be our big signings.

Now, let’s go and thump those cockney Hammers!

  • 17 norwegiantoonfan // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:29

what a blow…..to have been beaten by spuds for his signing is huge blow….if it has been arsenal, chelski, liverpool or barca i could have accepted it,but when it is spuds……….i can`t find the right words to tell you how gutted i feel….

  • 18 toonhitman // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:30

if modric is so good why have none of the top teams in europe come in for him…has kk got another player up his sleeve..but this modric deal is not done and dusted yet the clubs have to agree a fee which might cause a few probs, but i say again were are the top clubs do they no somthing the toon and spurs dont.

  • 19 Ausgeordie // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:31

Hate to say I told us so………god like we need another reason to hate the spurs. Hope he breaks his leg….sorry but im bitter

  • 20 Jack // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:31

its not the end of the world, maybe he is overhyped. he’s not world class because he couldn’t get into the team of the best 11 players in the world. someone even said he was as good as zidane the other day ffs. zidane was the best player ever lol.

  • 21 Graham // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:31

Agree DBF - but if we set a limit on what were gonna spend on 1 player and then someone else comes in and bids more then we have to take it on the chin and accept it.

If we were prepared to match the price and he chose London instead then fine thats his lookout. But for once its good to see that were not dangling 80000 beer tokens every week just to get a player in. Frustrating, yes but the days of spending loads and winning nowt are gone.

Have faith - the powers that be have said that we are a work in progress which will take 3 years or so. Lets not panic just because some player chose the smoke ionatead of us

  • 22 Vitorbarbosa // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:32

This news means Tot has 15M lesser to spend in the summer later. Players are plenty, good players are few but you will going to bang a wall if judge players solely on reputation.

I know we missed out on a top talent but this shows we actually looked for them and willing to spend more than 10m on one player.

As I mentioned before, a players doesn’t make a team. No one shall be blamed. Move on. A lot more players want to pull on our shirts. Luka missed the chance but if he is good and we are good, he might join us in the future.

  • 23 OMG // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:33

KK should use the Modric money to buy VAN DER VAART!!!!!!

  • 25 D B F // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:38

yh i agree graham but i just think that this guy wud hav been worth the extra few million in transfer fee as i dnt expect he will be gettin extremely high wages down at spurs, lets just hope tht keegans back up creative mid isnt deco eh

aghhhhhh im so angry, im actually so angry that if i see a spurs fan anywhere today im going to run them over

  • 27 D B F // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:39

ronaldeano- agree, wud love to see van der vaart in a toon shirt

  • 28 Chris // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:42

I think with Keegan not being involved with the transfer side of things we can’t sell the club to players. Keegan can talk players into signing for us. He ouses enthusiasm which rubs of on the players concerned. So that could be another reason we missed out.

  • 29 Bob // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:43

Why do people assume that it’s Mort’s fault?

It was Modric who signed the contract and I bet that it was Modric who made the choice. Also, if Modric won’t come, why would Van der Vaart?

And yes, we have missed out on a top talent. There’s no point in denying it.

Just keep the faith in KK. Rob Lee came for a pittance, I’m sure KK can find someone similar.

  • 30 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:43

VDV is pure class, i heard that Juventus want him. If the club acts NOW and offer Hamburg stupid money and the player stupid wages, the lure of playing in the Premier League and pushing for top 6 next season would be enough to get VDV!

  • 31 ginkoh // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:44

For my opinion, Tottenham is better than us now if compare with players and competition. But just now !!

Next season will be more interesting for us, Aston villa, Everton,Portsmouth, City and Tottenham. Because no one want to lose this race especially Giant invester like Yids.

  • 32 macn0ble // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:44

Damn shame, was really looking forward signin’ Modric. Well we just have to find a replacement. Have to agree with with Ronaldeano with this one-VDV would be an excellent piece of business.

  • 33 Midjew // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:44

The thing is, he basically JUST didnt wanna come cos Spurs are the same as us they are NOT in europe next year.

    Its a JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 34 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:45

Bob, Van Der Vaart is NOT Modric….

  • 36 Leo // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:47

as for the idea, dont worry we are building for the future…

its a bollox theory in other words, a money making venture, try to be like arsenal and make money rather than spend it. im soooooooooooo angry

  • 37 Jack // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:47

    let him go to spurs
maybe we will let him score against us when we beat them 4-1 again

  • 38 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:47

    Nobby’s Dad, Modric or VDV?!

  • 39 GazzaToon // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:47

firstly you guys need to stop moanin he’ll probley end up being a flop in the premier league anyway! secondly we did offer the same amount as spurs which is £16mil but they can offer a player european football which we cant so what do u expect. seems strange to me tho that spurs wud sign him as they have loads of midfielders anyway!!
and as the old saying goes theres plenty more fish in the sea

  • 40 Bob // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:49

Van der Vaart is a Dutch international and is one of the most highly rated midfielders in the world. I doubt that he will come to St James.

Again, we should be looking for the next Rob Lee, and not chasing these big names who we have no chance of getting.

  • 41 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:50

I bet N’Zogbias pissed off! Totenham wont want to buy him now!!!!!

  • 42 Andy1 // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:52

Joey Barton can be the next Rob Lee. I want the next Beardsley.

  • 43 Obafan // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:52

Well I’m disappointed on this one but on the other hand; I have faith in Wise and KK that they will attract some good players this summer.

Ronaldeano - Spot on m8, VDV should be a fantastic buy, but it will be hard to get him, esp if they qualify for ECL.

Let us go after ARSHAVIN, personal if I had to choose between Modric and Arshavin, I would always have chosen for Arshavin. Why? He simply is a very good player and he can play in several positions.

  • 44 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:53

@ Bob, Van Der Vaarts name is just as big as Modric’s name. Its ok to be ambitious and TRY and buy TOP DRAWER QUALITY!

  • 45 azim // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:53

i’m totally disappointing with this..he is the 2nd player we lost after woodgate…..another disaster

  • 46 t-g-w // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:53

Absolutely gutted. Jumped out of bed earlier to come straight on here when I heard the news. i think the thing that bothers me most is that it seems like we did all the hard work, negoitating fees etc, then Spurs just swoop in and offer the same amount at the last minute. Just like the Woodgate thing… Not impressed at all. Spurs are gonna be a major force next season. And how can we expect to rise above the likes of Man City (who are gonna spend huge amounts), Villa, Portsmouth and Everton? European football would be a massive achievment next season.

So next targets for that position. Arshavin? Diego? I thought VDV had already signed for Juventus in January?

  • 47 KKK // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:55

Well lets hope Wise and Co will learn from taking so long to get the signing completed. It will be very interesting to see who Keegan has as number 2 in his list after Modric.

As Keegan said “only top quality signings”. So don’t be to annoyed at losing out on this one, there will be many more quality players on that list that will want to sign for us and probably for alot less than the £20M Dynamo Zagreb were looking for Modric.

  • 48 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:57

Totaly agree Obafan, Arshavin would be another great signing. Like i have said before, If we want success at this club, we need to get young, talented players who can play and also develop at Newcastle. VDV could do that and so could lots of players. Im still excited about this summer transfer window, i think we will land some top drawer players

  • 49 toonhitman // Apr 26, 2008 at 10:58

people this deal hasnt even been con firmed,so there is still hope

  • 50 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:00

  • 52 Dave // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:03

  • 53 YongMalaysia // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:03

  • 54 keeganpleasecomeback // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:05

Van der Vaart is much better than Modric - Im going to stick my neck out here as I simply cant see Modric hack it in the premier league - to me hes too small and fragile….Van der vaart is world class - unfortunately his mum is from Valencia and has moved back there so that is going to be his destination after the euro as he wants to be near his family - even though Juventus has coveted him for the past 2 years………If KK could get him I would build my own statue of KK in my back garden

  • 55 Spyro // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:06

Midd The Yidd is not my flatmate but he is just as annoying

  • 59 Rob Kirton // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:10

I don’t necessarily think that losing out on Modric is anything to do with us being slow or unwilling to pay the money. Although agreeing with previous comments about our development being about 2 years or so behind Spurs - who we will top in the league this year :0) …….

We have two problems in attracting top players

    1) London
    2) lack of European football

Just throwing money at top players is not going to be the answer.

Being better placed than the likes of Spurs next season will be a help (players seeing which way the club is heading) - and I believe that Keegan can deliver on that front. Lets just see who we can bring in this time around. No big names, no big prices needed - just the right people.

For big names who Keegan bought last time like Shearer, Ferdinand, Tino etc.. he also bought the likes of Paul Bracewell, Rob Lee, Andy Cole, Gavin Peacock, Scot Sellars, John Beresford and Pav who really brought the team on and made the team tick.

  • 60 zhun // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:14

    rose and fell
this is what a Newcastle fan must suffer!
from Souness’s big spending, then won 4-2 at home against Az by Roeder, until BSA’s revolution .
all of these lift us up, but look what had happened,
we’ were brought down, and hurted so much..
Nevertheless, my faith for Newcastle wont fade.
but what i can say is it really disappointed me.
hopefully King will heal these wounds slowly with his magic.
    again, its unspeakable hurt

  • 61 Taiwantoon // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:16

Agree with you, Rob. Yet I think there is another factor that we are lacking. Namely, ambition.

Just rewind our short term memory, and how many top rated players have linked with us? I feel sorry to say this, but most of them are second rated.

On the other hand, as much as I hate to say this, Spurs is linked with Etoo…

  • 62 Bill F // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:19

Exactly what I expected, seen it too many times. We need to be top four before we get players like him or be one of the top London clubs.
As a lot of people on this site suggested we were being used to lever up the price, a little bit of payback would be to thrash another London club today.

  • 63 Yorkie Dave // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:20

Van Der Vaart with a manager like Keegan would be immense. He is a superb attackig midfieder. This guy would improve our midfield a 1000 fold.

  • 64 Hadrian // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:22

Whats the point in dennis wise and co if the cant wrap up a deal like this ahead of spurs when we have a billionare owner?

there in for some serious grief over this , and better start proving their worth , and its all abit sickening .

  • 65 Frankieboy // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:24

It was obviously not meant to be. We are all disappointed but this time next year so will Modric be cos Spurs will do nowt in Europe and we will finish a lot higher than them next season.
We have all been here before …have faith.
    Mark my words lads.

  • 67 marat18 // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:38

Aye, Shava is not so young - 26 now.
But honestly if you have to choose from Arshavin, Modric, VDV and Diego - then Arshavin is less attractive option for top-clubs, so we have the chanse.

  • 68 valle // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:41

Guys, if he chose to play infront of 39.000 at a club that has never played modern day champions league, then his ambition and reasons has to be questioned… In either case, it might end up as being a blessing in disguise… There are still loads of midfield talent out there, with players such as Diego, Van Der Vaart and Moutinho still available

  • 69 valle // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:45

Frankieboy… True words, time will pass, big names will come and some will not, new names will appear and in the end of the day, we will always be bigger club meassured by fanbase and economic power than spurs will ever be… Keegan will get us back to greats in due time.

  • 70 Jack // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:49

it looks like ashley will not be spending significant money again firstly they came out and said that they weren’t signing star players and now he is unwilling to spend an extra 1.5 million on the modric transfer fee

  • 71 Guinea Mag // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:50

Disappointing, but not the end of the world. KK needs to bring European football to Tyneside if we’re to attract the top players.

I’m confident KK will do it, but needs time and money to buy 4 to 5 new first team players and not just squad players…..

  • 72 valle // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:58

Just thought i would remind you guys how sad spurs fans where when we signed Duff ahead of them (Along with Parker the year before)

  • 73 domtoon // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:59

To be frank, it’s Modric’s loss. He may get to play European football next season, but he’s missed on the possibility of something even better - a revived Newcastle squad with him playing a central role. If he had pulled it off and helped us out, he would have had the backing of the best supporters in the world. Instead, he chose Spurs. Stuff Modric, let’s forget about him and look to those who WILL come play for us!!!!

  • 74 domtoon // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:00

I still think if they don’t wanna come, then they can sod off!! They don’t deserve us my friends, not we deserve them. Remember that please before you start getting all down in the dumps about it.

  • 75 Gunnar/Iceland // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:01

These are very disappointing news. I was so excited by the possibilty of signing this player. I think I would actually be less gutted if he had signed for Chelsea or Barca instead of f-ing Spurs. I cursed outloud when I read that he had signed for them.

  • 76 daniel // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:21

To be honest boys, I hadn’t seen him play much so I went on YOUTUBE like someone suggested and watched the video Diego vs Modric. Diego looked by far the better player, not saying that we can attract Diego, i’m sure we can’t. But my point is, there’s plenty more fish in the sea.

  • 77 toonhitman // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:28

mordic could turn out to be a massive flop coming from croation league to the prem is a big step, but like ive said if this player is top draw why hasnt he gone to the big clubs in europe this makes me think he isnt as good as we think…

  • 78 Steeley // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:32

The worst thing about this whole thing is that now we’re stuck with another Le Sulk who doesnt want to be at the club (Zog) - here’s hoping this kicks his little scrotey arse into touch and that he realises he aint all that!

  • 79 Dondatta13 // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:32

Ronaldeano, I TOTALLY agree Van der Vaart is who and what we need. I swear to God, EVERYTIME I post a comment on this site, Im screaming/dreaming of this signing.

There are people who say we dont stand a chance. This kid was all set for world domination (ohh err mrs) then what did he do? Left Ajax for Hamburg ?

Now lets see. Isnt KK some sort of HSV legend having played there? We have a BILLIONAIRE supporter/owner. KK’s legendary cavalier style full of flaire and panache, fast flowing, attack minded football. Lastly lets not forget the fanbase that would make this kid a GOD on Tyneside

I honestly believe this one signing would catapult us into europe. The kid Van der Vaart is who we need! Lets make some noise to get the ball rolling lol

  • 80 NorthAtlanticMagfan // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:34

Let’s move on….What about the hottest property of portuguese football Ricardo Quaresma. Fabuolus player!!! Reminds me of C. Ronaldo!!

  • 81 Ashton // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:43

Spurs are not better than us !!
the problem is we have very tide owner
    im really dissipointed

  • 82 Gunnar/Iceland // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:56

My DREAM signings in the summer:

    Defence; Cuellar, Metzelder, W.Bridge
    Midfield; McGeady, Arshavin, Veloso

there would be nothing stopping us.

  • 83 Stephen // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:11

    BIGGEST BLOW EVER…………

i THOUGHT IT WAS IN THE BAG

  • 84 hanzowen // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:18

ah just need to bring 1 or 2 top drawer playmaker & forget Modric if he wants else where. KK, Wise & others’d soon find a few who really have true passions of playing for Toon Army i.e. Martins,Taylor. We’re still in the early stage of rebuiding a great NUFC so don’t be gutted of this miss out. Just move on.

  • 85 Marcus // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:21

Why not go after Berbatov? If they seem intent on poaching our players or signing players that we are after. Screw Tottenham!!

  • 86 dougnufc // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:51

Agree with Marcus, Berbatov would be great and if I am not mistaken, he is a fan of Shearer so..he might be interested

  • 87 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:52

@ Dondatta13, VDV is going to sign for us! I feel it in my bones!!! :)

    HOPE SO!!!

  • 88 richie // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:03

i hope we hammer spurs home and away next season

the point is players are snubbing us and the general view from out siders is were mugs,,we need t make a big impact next season and shut them all up i believe were 5th biggest club at the mo, lets get 5th next season and put to rest this spurs man city shit

  • 89 Pete // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:04

Don’t be daft, Van der Vaart has already done the move Modric just made now. He’s off to bigger things pretty soon I’m sure. I’m extremely disappointed that we can’t even compete with Tottenham in the transfer market.
If we’re in for a player the top clubs want we really don’t stand a chance.

  • 90 toonhitman // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:17

this lad has only played in the croaction league
the prem is a diffrent story, and at over 20 mill is madness i think we have dodged a bullet, could turn out to be a flop and an expensive one

  • 91 tapir // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:20

if a young top player also we can attract ,how u guys reckon we can attract the so call world class player???
    very dissapointing………

  • 92 t-g-w // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:29

Haha jsut realised Spurs paid more for Bent than they did for Modric (without add-ons). Idiots. They’re just splashing the cash like we used to and they will come back down to earth at some point with a huge bump. Maybe do a Leeds.

What about Moutinho? After Modric isn’t he the one we’ve had most interest in?

  • 93 stantos // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:58

Did anyone really think he would sign for us???? ffs he’s been linked with chelsea, barca etc etc. Come on guys, think about how the story was leaked, Zgreb wanted a bidding war.

Spurs will still be useless, and trust me there’ll be decent players coming in.

What we must realise is that until we can offer european football this will keep happening.

What we should see is 3 or 4 handy signings that should help to put us up the league. Then bang !!!! next summer people will realise we re serious and that ll attract more players.

Think about it, if Modric sets the league alight….. how long will he be at spurs until the real big boys come in???? Blessing in disguise i reckon.

    Come on lads !!!!

  • 94 Piers // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:59

I am totally disappointed. This is a monumental blow to Newcastle and its fans. What was Mike Ashley thinking, i mean is an extra 5 million too much for 22 year old midfield superstar????? I am at a complete loss for words.

  • 95 toonhitman // Apr 26, 2008 at 15:05

spot on santos..if he was that good whats he doing talking to us and spurs, hyped right up so they could get a good price because he could of bought out his contract at the end of next season for 1.5 mill..none of the big clubs wanted him that speaks volumes to me

  • 96 apan // Apr 26, 2008 at 15:28

    WTF U ALL MOANING ABOUT!?

He chooses SPURS over US, so get over it!

Dont blame the management or whatever they tried their best, they offered the same amount, but in the end Modric chooses Spurs Over US! so get over it!

    WHY? PERHAPS-

    1 - London
2- SPURS won TROPHY this season, did we? that must be the the main lure because for sure this news is spreaded at Croatia, what news of us spreaded there except sacking of managers & bad press? Modric surely taking there as a good sign and yes spurs still ahead of us in the table
    3- No European Football
4- Juande Ramos is more known than KK nowadays, accept the fact the new generation esp outside UK dont know him that well
5- We were never in the driving seat, the press just sparked it up to raise his price simply cos they know we are desperate aka the fans esp seing the response today, again GET OVER IT!

    GET IN ARSHAVIN!

Lets focus on today game shall we?

  • 97 howway geordies // Apr 26, 2008 at 16:50

A lot of you get far too carried away with paper talk about potential signings. I am only interested in who we have signed, not who the papers say we have been linked with.

  • 98 Toon1978 // Apr 26, 2008 at 17:27

Spurs are doing my bloody head in they want EVERYBODY i hope they have a crap season next year, Woodgate gets a major injury and MODRIC ends up being a total flop. Anyway that means Spurs wont want N’Zogbia now and even if they do i wouldnt sell him to the greedy cockney wankers. Bet the cheeks sods bid for Owen next. Modric is missing the best fans in the world and when he sees us win the F.A. cup next season while Spurs flounder at the foot of the table he will regret what he has done. Some hell with MODRIC and his gang of money grabbers we dont want them at NUFC lets get LENNON, ARSHIVAN,BRIDGE,DIEGO,BERBATOV lol and METZELDER.

  • 99 Newcastle United. // Apr 26, 2008 at 17:33

  • 101 Tom_Toon // Apr 26, 2008 at 18:15

Shame really but he cost them 15.8 mil rising to 20.8 mil for add ons. to be honest i dont think he is worth over 12 mil. As for VV, absoluely no chance if Modric didnt come.

  • 102 TooooooN // Apr 26, 2008 at 18:29

  • 104 mitch // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:05

Hope he is not going to spurs to play with berbatov ooks like he is off so his agent and ramos thinks so as well NUFC he will see next season where he should have went

  • 105 adam // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:08

yeah he might be a gooplayer but he will lave tottenham in a couple of years and he might be a flop in his first season the defences are alot tougher in the premiership and costing £15.8m will be a waste he worth about 10m luck at the money tottenham have wasted over the last couple of years
    darren bent £16.5m
    younes kaboule £8m
    kevin prince boateng £8m
    mido £6m
    didier zokora £6m
    adel tarabart £6m

berbetov, lennon ,king ,robinson, malbranque and dawson will leave

  • 106 Toon1978 // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:23

Attraction of London and European football was to much for him to turn down. The snobbery of foreigners not wanting to come up north is bewildering because the North is a nicer place all together. But that does not win you the PL or get you into Europe. This just shows how much our beloved club has went back in recent years. The moment Souness came in he ripped our team apart, Robert, Bellamy were two top players at NUFC but he got rid of them and brought in players that wouldnt get a game for the reserves ie Amady Faye, Boumsong and co. Ten years ago we would of snapped up players like Modric without a problem at all not even ten years ago i would even say 5 years ago. Sad to loose out on this player i really thought we would get him but to no avail GREEDY Spurs hate to see NUFC linked with good players but they STILL cant beat us. Spurs are a nothing team IMO and are lucky to be attracting the players they have been and i admit i am jelous they have bought that right back from Rangers and also WOODGATE, LENNON,BERBATOV, and now MODRIC.

  • 107 Toon1978 // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:37

Jack i said in a previous thread that M.Ashley is full of hot air. He preaches about challenging the big boys but this will not happen if big money is not spent. The team we have ATM is not good enough really yes they have pulled themselves out of relegation but really that is still not good enough. NUFC need at least 50 million in the summer to pull in two world class midfielder, a world class striker and a top defenders. If this does not happen then i believe we will have the same problem next season. SIDWELL, BROWN, SHOREY, players like this are no better then what we already have ,we are going round in circles. We dont get players that WANT to come to us we get players that are not getting a start at their club and want first team football ie OWEN, PARKER, DUFF, BUTT, MARTINS, EMRE, all players who did not get to play in the first eleven from the clubs they came from. We need players that WANT to come to NUFC and want to wear the shirt with pride and not think”only here to get first team appearences”

  • 108 Scott H11 // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:47

I dont think we are actually losing out to Spurs I just think a lot of the top players want to be in London, so geographically top London teams will always have the advantage over us in the transfer market

  • 109 jarra - martins // Apr 26, 2008 at 20:19

well that has ruined my summer he was the main player i wanted to see at united completly and uter devistated . F**kn usless we are and for this so called recruitment team …. they should find a new job the sackless b**ds

  • 110 apan // Apr 26, 2008 at 21:41

its not their fault u idiot, they offered the same as spurs did, u want us to offer 5m more and get ripped for a player? its modric choice and yes i want him too but i want a player who wants to play for newcastle! thats why zogbia hv to be out if he dont want to!

  • 111 Raffles // Apr 26, 2008 at 22:37

    Some facts.

Keegan said he’d not be looking at transfer targets until we were mathematically safe.

Tottenham made an approach before us.

They are also in Europe and also count the attractions of Ramos and of having won something (minor or not, it’s more than we have) this year.

Grow up, wake up and stop believing or pushing blame at Mort or whomever. It’s Modric’s decision and he’s hardly the be all and end all.

FFS, he may get horribly injured during Euro2008, then we’d have looked proper fools. Again.

    Smell the coffee.

  • 112 tian // Apr 27, 2008 at 0:04

    GUYS, think of it positively.
we have just saved 15 millions from buying this bigshot
with this money i believe we can buy 2 quality players at least =.=
    but i dunno who
i bet keegan has his plans :D

  • 113 RyanTeh // Apr 27, 2008 at 1:02

We should pray and hope that he can’t perform well in EPL. How many players have Spurs buys but can’t even perform? True, Ramos is well known manger but we beat them previously. We can do the same to them the next season. Hope so and pray so. We don’t need to offer to a lad who only concern about big wages as they may be the liability for United. We should concentrate on our remaining matches and hope we have a better standing than Spurs.

  • 114 spursfect // Apr 27, 2008 at 2:42

spurs fan here all i hear from newcastle fans is how u beat us a few times recently WOW how great, but when was the last time u pricks won anything , 39 years ago, first woodgate who stated he wanted 2 go to a club where he can get success i.e he,s choice not to join newcastle now modric who obviously dident fancy mediocraty turned u down. we might be close in the league but i feel spurs have a better squad.

  • 115 scotty // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:57

Well i’m not dissapointed about this - Spurs have paid way way too much for him. Come on man, fee rising to ower £20 mil???? Show me all his stats to back this up!!!

The alarm bells start ringing when no mention of the top four have shown an interest!!!

Worth no more than 10 mil IMO.

Keep the faith. We will sign some cracking MF’s this season. Now, i’d be happy to buy Van der Vart for £15 mil.

  • 116 craig chisholm // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:18

spursfect…………..you knob………….close in league, on the same points, yes i would call that pretty close. i will tell you something else, i bet we finish higher than you this season.
moving on to talk to OUR fans on OUR blog (naff off spursfect)…………lads, one thing which i find strange about the whole modric deal is that if this bloke is such hot shit etc etc, how come not a single big team went in for him?? he was only 15 million afterall, madrid, inter, juve, barca, manure, arse, chelski, liverwank, none of them gave a single toss about this bloke even though his agent and club tried their hardest to start a bidding war. they even went public on it saying that we had not offered enough so they wanted to create a bidding war between us and spurs (and anyone else). funny thing is though, we dropped out and no-one else came in, leaving spurs clear to sign him. this all sounds a bit funky to me. besides, we have seem these great players before, 90% are crap in the prem. sheva etc etc. the list goes on for ever.
on a final note, saying as our league form over the last 7 games is number 2…. maybe even number 1 now in the stats, why should we worry about poxy spurs.

  • 117 craig chisholm // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:20

if we can sort out zogbia’s attitude, would he prove as good as modric???

  • 118 EssexYid // Apr 27, 2008 at 20:52

Oh dear, you lot really are bitter and twisted aren’t you, “Spurs are crap” Spurs are small” “The Toon are massive etc” LOL

Get over it you Geordie boys, and just for the ill informed on here , Spurs wont be doing a Leeds United anytime soon as some suggest, Tottenham Hotspur have a bigger annual turnover than Newcastle and a much smaller wage bill, and our backers are also far richer than Mike Ashley ever will be with a combined wealth of well over £5 Billion pounds.

Oh and since Newcastle last Won a domestic Trophy in 1955, Newcastle have Won an impressive 1 (ONE) Trophy LOL, Tottenham on the other hand have Won 14 (FOURTEEN) Trophies since 1961 including 3 (THREE) European Trophies, but you carry bigging Newcastle up wont you boys.

Perhaps you will come back with the old chestnut that you have actually qualified for the Champions League, or that you have more fans than Tottenham because you currently have a bigger stadium, Tottenham are just about to start building a new £30m training/acadamy ground andwill reveal there plans for a new £300m stadium before the end of June 2008.
