Keegan Apparently Furious Over Modric Events

April 27th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 257 Comments

Well, this report is from the News of The World (NOTW), so that’s a warning from the start, but apparently Kevin Keegan was sure Modric would be a Newcastle player on Friday.

kevin-keegan-kk.jpg

Kevin Keegan – apparently furious Newcastle didn’t get Modric

But that didn’t happen due to what looks a little like a bizarre situation on Friday night, but when we all woke up Saturday morning – Modric was a Tottenham player.

A Newcastle source told the NOTW today:

“It was difficult to calm Kevin down, he was furious.”

“It’s a major embarrassment as Kevin felt getting Modric would have been the perfect message to Newcastle fans.”

Luka Modric has been a target for many top clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal, after his great form for Croatia in their European 2008 qualifying campaign, especially in the game against England last November, when Croatia won 3-2.

It looks like the player was willing to sign for Newcastle, but there was no deal sealed between the clubs since they could never agree on the actual fee. But there’s no doubt Newcastle were ahead in the race until Friday.

But, somehow Spurs stepped in to pinch the player at the last minute, and we still have no idea what actually happened.

We feel that Newcastle will be even more keen sign a top player to get the transfer season off to a good start.

The Modric events are now water under the bridge, unfortunately, but we’d still like to know what happened – it may be something the club can learn from for the future.

It’s not often you are close to signing a world class 22 year-old, who wants to come to your club.

Who should we be going for as our first signing?

Let us know – comments welcome.

It’s the ‘News of the World’… Dare I say more!

  • 3 Fernando // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:16 PM

that’s good, atleast the next person of same or bigger stature will not slip thru our hands. to make up for this, we will sign someone big :D

  • 4 gonufc // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:18 PM

Diego!!!! Would love him even more than modric. If this is true then it reflects well on Keegan, makes him sound really upset that he’s let down the fans.

  • 5 ash // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:19 PM

    well i’m furious too!!

  • 6 Fernando // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:20 PM

to appease the fans if i was mort i’d be pushing for the contract negotiations with owen and taylor and others to be wrapped up quickly. that would make a statement esp owen’s contract

whether what the NOW says about keegan being true or not the whole situation has made us look like right idiots (again). and gives the press tons of ammo for stories about keegans relationship with wise etc.

At the end of the day the we were looking to pay 12million for the croatian but spurs eventually paid 15.2 million the next day so i guess money talks and his agent was out to get as much as possible how else would newcastle more or less state his signature was in the bag on friday. Just shows that newcastle will not be held to ransom and pay over the odds as done previously. I bet the agent of modric contacted the toon before the deal was done to spurs saying you need to up the offer and we said no good on the toon. lets see who we go for next

  • 10 Aggi // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:26 PM

just bring in Arshavin that would certainly calm me down. do believe we could get him alot cheaper plus he is more proven and just as versatile but 4 years older.

  • 11 scottish mag // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:28 PM

just remember modric deal isnt complete yet, can he still change his mind

  • 12 ToonDaft // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:28 PM

DIEGO!!! DIEGO!!! DIEGO!!! At least let us try for him! I would laugh if we missed out on Modric to bring in Diego, better player in my book

  • 13 Fernando // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:28 PM

at least things are looking up.. we are moving forwrd on the pitch. next year if we work hard then win a cup and get into europe :)

  • 14 ObaFan2 // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:29 PM

Very bizzare but we have to move on. KK trusted his scouts/execs to make this deal and it fell through at the last minute (if we believe the press!).

Like I say we have to move on and find the talent we deserve and there’s plenty about who’d want to play for KK, those with ambition anyway.

I agree we have to sort out contracts on the people we have here already, Oba and Owen for starters.

THIS SITE IS CRAP!! ALWAYS PICKING CRAP FROM PAPERS LIKE THE NEWS OF THE WORLD.. IVE STOPPED READING MOST ARTICLES AS ITS ALL LIES. THE OLD ADDAGE OF “I’LL BELIEVE IT WHEN i SEE IT” SHOULD BE USED. THERES TOO MANY POOR SITES SPECULATING

  • 16 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:29 PM

be sooo funny if the deal to spurs fell through

  • 17 Taiwantoon // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:29 PM

I am glad to learn King Kev is not happy about losing Modric, well, lets assume the story is true itself first…

King Kev certainly would demand more from the recurit team next round and I am sure the recruit team will be eager to prove themselves after the incident, too.

As much as I dislike Mr. Wise due to his colourful playing career, I can not argue with the fact that he is a man with high esteem and he will work very very hard after this.

  • 18 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:30 PM

mark you know what to do then dont ya?

  • 19 ToonDaft // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:31 PM

scottish mag; would love it for him to change his mind – the unfortunate reality is that his representatives would lost out on a few extra coffers, the greedy swines

VAN DER VAART, VAN DER VAART, VAN DER VAART ………. did I mention VAN DER VAART? now go get lol ;)

  • 21 Fernando // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:32 PM

rw and lw guys any suggestions?

need to improve quality on both sides, esp with duff still in hibernation and milner not improving his intelligence

  • 22 scottish mag // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:32 PM

yeah but can he still back out of the deal having agreed terms or is that final even though deal isnt complete

  • 23 Tooner // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:33 PM

    Geordie Gerrard,

Since he was in the stands yesterday for Tottenham’s game, I really doubt it will fall through.

  • 24 Danny // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:34 PM

It really pisses me off this like….

I am just as angry as it sounds keegan was…And just to sum up how much this has pissed me off I would rather Modric went to bloody Scumderland than to bloody tottenham!

He will never become a better player with them f**king lot….

I was soo excited when i thought we were getting him….If you had asked me all season which player would you sign if i was newcastle manager I would of said luka modric!!!

Im not gonna kid myself and say that other players are better and the he wasnt that good anyway because he is f***ing awesome!

I know I sound a bit pathetic but this has really f**in ruined my season and weekend!

He would have been f^^in class for us !

    :-(

  • 25 ToonDaft // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:34 PM

agree with Geordie Gerrard last comment – if this has been our new recruitment that has fallen short, KK will be furious, however, if that is the case then Ashley is also chance to be furious – i think they will want to make amends for this farce – need to do it soon though, great time to be signing players now

  • 31 craig chisholm // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:39 PM

yeah i know its the news of the world but i can believe it this time. we lost him cos newc offered 12.7 million and they wanted over 15. our board cost us the deal. mort is a bean cruncher at the end of the day. getting REAL money out of him is going to be like getting blood out of a stone. thats twice mort has emabrassed us now cos of his tight arsed ways, woody and modric. he is costing us credability.

  • 32 Nasher // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:40 PM

I know It’s a long shot but if ac milan and man city have cooled interest for ronaldinho what are your thoughts on him guys. I have agreed on not bringing in a statement signing but surely he is better than our current crop?

Craig, Woodgate just decided he wanted to play for Tottenham instead of NUFC. Hardly Mort’s fault. The Modric situation is bizarre. Its hard to point the finger until we know the full story.

  • 35 ToonDaft // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:44 PM

time will tell craig – you never know, they may pump 50m+ into transfers this summer proving otherwise – fingers and toes crossed eh

    this is a thought exercise..

say we signed someone big, how many shirts printed sales in that players name would finance it?

van der vaart paid by letter would be good.

    hehe

  • 43 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:51 PM

I have had time to think about this and i would like to thank ED for all the information on this situation, but i think we should put this whole situation behind us now and move on please. We are in good form now and we can finally get some positive articles coming out about us. Modric would have been a class signing, but it wasn’t meant to be. I suggest we (including you Ed) let it go now otherwise it will be torture when we have to watch this guy in Euro 2008, and even worse, when he pulls on a Tottenham shirt and plays well against us, because rest assured this will happen.

Look at the positives of this.
    - The board are looking for a top class CM to be the engine of our team
    - We are not leaving it late to become active with transfers
    - The board are looking in the right places for talent.
    - We are offering considerable amounts in transfer fees
    - And we are no longer being held to ransom for wages, transfer fees etc.

I feel all of the above are better than one single class player, and i have said it before anyway, Modric is not one of a kind

  • 44 Fernando // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:55 PM

Blackburn to Newcastle Alan Shearer signed by keegan.

A similar move would be though not as great but still quality.

    Guess who?

  • 45 Mark (not the one that typed in caps) // Apr 27, 2008 at 4:57 PM

as if that quote is actually real

“It was difficult to calm Kevin down, he was furious.”

lol calm him down? were they all locked in a room together waiting on this transfer to go through (not training with the first team ahead of the match on sat)

Van der Vaary please. =p montolivo is pretty damn good aswell.

that diego fella is alot like emre imo (a better version)

point is: theres plenty of other players we can get that are more than adequate. one signing slipping away from us isn’t the end of the world.

  • 46 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:00 PM

spyro, i think even if i split with my missus i wouldnt be a gutted as coming on here on saturday morning to say i was looking forward to the game, ohhhh and up pops spurs have signed modric. GUTTED.lol.

but i think we do need to let go and look at the positives

  • 47 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Also, lets not forget that before this news of Modric even came out none of us even thought we had a chance of landing such a player. This shows the board are indeed ambitious, but just not to the classless levels of Tottenham. A team that ruthlessly sacked a manager that got them 5th place (unknown territory for the mid-table team that they are) TWO YEARS IN A ROW just because of a poor start to the season.

  • 48 ToonDaft // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:03 PM

agree with Spyro here, there are positives to be taken out of a very frustrating situation

  • 49 Tom_Toon // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:03 PM

All this Modric talk is getting on my nerves.

There is no completely legitimate truth we were even in for him.

Also, how do we know we werent on the verge of signing, Romario, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Maradona and other great players or ledgends that werent published in the papers.

  • 50 ELFER // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:11 PM

Not so unhappy the deal broke down…but what makes me feared is that KK is furious and maybe the signing team has now pressure and makes overpaid moves…I really really hope this won’t be the case!

  • 51 Danny // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:12 PM

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPN_LMA2tyA

  • 52 Jack // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:13 PM

next time there is transfer news im going to be completely negative so if we sign the player i will be surprised and if we dont i wont be disappointed

  • 53 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:21 PM

wathing that vid of van der vaart, pure class

  • 54 Dondatta13 // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:21 PM

If we were to sign Van der Vaart …. he would become our black n white Van man lol causing havoc on premiership defences. Turning left when everyone thinks he’s going to turn right, speeding, with a blatent disregard for anyones (premiership) saftey ! lol Go sign the B&W Van man ……. man lol

  • 55 Danny // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:25 PM

Glad you like it Geordie Gerrard…he is some player like…I think he wants to go to chelsea but the same could have been said about modric!

Lets just ope he is on Wise or keegans list!!!

I really cant shake the disappointment yet!!

He would have been soo class….Lets hope that any player we get instead is just as good….Im totally gonna boo Modric next season wether its his fault or not!! lol

  • 56 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:29 PM

i just hope it doesnt go through, but there again im clutching straws, we do need someone like van der vaart. perhaps keegans old hamburg days will help us get such a great player. I really would like arshavin, qaulity. we need two creative midfielders and a defensive midfielder if we keep playing 4-3-3

  • 57 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:30 PM

infact i wouldnt midnd arteta either

  • 58 Tom_Toon // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:35 PM

GG7, its the other way round. To play 4-3-3 you need 2 DM’s and 1 AM.

  • 59 Danny // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:35 PM

Van Der Vaart, Taye Taiwo, Jeremy Toulalan and Vincent Kompany and we would qualify for Europe….Along with our current form of course!

  • 60 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:37 PM

no you dont atal, you could pick either or. we need 2 attacking midfielders as we have zero, that could mean rotating them or playing both in some games, the defensive midfielder to challenge barton and butt for place, but i cannot see who kk would go for as a dm

  • 61 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:39 PM

cant see jeremy toulalon coming, but he is probably the best dm around atm, yes we would qaulify for europe with them, but highly unlikely

  • 62 figsdad // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:40 PM

thats what this 25mil signing is…

  • 65 Danny // Apr 27, 2008 at 5:47 PM

Yeah know we would never get toulalan but for some reason im obsessed with him at the minute….

Like keegan said though he doesnt want people to say…”we cant get them players”…lets say “why not” instead….

Even if it is in vain haha

Diego supplying Owen and Martins? Deadly. I would love it! LOVE IT!

  • 75 Toon1978 // Apr 27, 2008 at 6:21 PM

NUFC are there own worst enemy, sometimes i feel we are the laughing stock of the country, seems to me M.Ashley is reluctant to spend money i even get the feeling he is trying to do Spurs a favour with what happenned wit Woody and now Modric. We need a big big signing to excite the fans and players like DIEGO,VAN DER VAART, ARSHIVAN would do the job nicely but this needs to be NOW.

  • 81 scottish mag // Apr 27, 2008 at 6:45 PM

just remember arshavin said that he would love to move to the toon b4 fat sam got sacked, so he would probably still want to but we need to get the bid in ow 10m would get him for definate but wot about DINIYAR BILYALETDINOV of lokomotiv moscow, he is a versatile player and can play on the left wing, in the center of the pitch or in his most comfortable position, just behind the strikers as an attacking midfielder. He possesses a good scoring rate and good passing but he is best known for his dribbling and pace. 19 goals in 111 games for lokomotiv

  • 83 nightfall // Apr 27, 2008 at 6:49 PM

i think kev & co saying they will spend BIG was/is a mistake…’cos clubs will want more money from us…
our team probably tried to repair that by showing other clubs we won’t be held for ransom by not agreeing total modic’s fee, but now if keegan was furious..well that can’t be good…i think there’s a lack of communication among our staff…

    Realistic targets

    1.Crouch
    2.Pennant
    3.Riise
    4.Bridge
    5.Shorey
    6.SWP
    7.Sidwell

    Not realistic

    1.Diego
    2.Arshivan
    3.Van Der Vaart
    4.Bentley
    5.Henry
    6.Berbatov

  • 87 Tom_Toon // Apr 27, 2008 at 6:57 PM

  • 90 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:05 PM

I think this is the best available side to us all the players are realistic and would give us a good balance in all areas:

    ———————Given—————————
    —Beye—Taylor———-Faye—Bridge—–
    -Wright-Phillips–Barton–Veloso–McGeady-
    —————–Owen———Crouch—————–

Subs: Harper, Edgar, Enrique, Milner, Emre, Martins, Viduka

  • 91 ToonKing // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:08 PM

Arshavin and any other players from crap leagues are realistic targets and we should at least put bids in. If they are so good that there is major competition from better teams we might not get them and we’ll have to accpet that. Tottenham beat us to a couple of players, but outside the top four we are still probably the most attractive team.

Elano and Petrov went to Man City who had nothing to offer and had finished even lower the season before. Daniel Carvalho and the other good players in Russia would probably want to come to England. Don’t really know any but there are good players in that league.

Personally, I’d take Crouch. Whenever he plays he scores and he or Ashton would be a nice improvement on Viduka.

  • 94 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:12 PM

On another subject i think we could raid Valencia a bit in the summer

    Albiol
    Joaquin
    Caneira
    Albelda
    Vicente

All would be useful as starters or squad players covering positions where we need it.

  • 95 Nick C // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Crouch would be a great signing, but I think he might be off to join his old china down at Pompey. If Ashton wasn’t so injury prone I would love him. Wouldn’t it be nice to nick Jones off the Mackems?
Arca as well would be a good bet.

  • 96 Fernando // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Lets beat CHELSEA, that will make a huge headline and statement! everyone will hear of NEWCASTLE UNITED and Keegan. Players will be inspired to join us!

The best scenario would be Man Utd loses as well next weekend. So we’d give them a lifeline!

    Do u guys agree?

  • 97 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Ill tell you what were classy peformances you cockney w****r the last 5 times weve played your s***e side winning every one and we will do the same next season.

Modric or not he will be wasted in you side anyway, either wide left or in the middle with the mighty Jenas, Ghaly, Zokora or Tainio yipee!

A quality player like that cannot make your shambolic joke side a top team.

  • 98 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:20 PM

problem is craigg, every other top side will be looking to raid Valencia and sevilla this summer.

I think we could get Veloso and McGeady, and if we did they would surely make up for missing out on Modric.

  • 99 JC // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:23 PM

    St-Huntalaar
    Lb-Bridge
    Cm/AM-Van Der Vaart + Veloso
    Cb-Van Buyten

Mighten be realistic but that is who I’d go for, although don’t know about Van Buyten. Any thoughts?

  • 100 Tom_Toon // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:25 PM

    CB – Bruno Alves
    RB/LB – Seitaridis
    DM – Katsouranis
    AM – Montolivo
    RW/LW – SWP
    ST – Pandev
    :)

  • 101 Nasher // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:27 PM

  • 102 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:27 PM

Yep thats true but Vetere and Jiminez’ contacts in Spain should give us the edge on that matter.

I think Veloso would be a better signing than Modric as he would give us a perfect balance with Barton in the middle

What do you think of the side i said above, i think that could be a great side and all are pretty realistic IMO

  • 103 toonoholic // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:28 PM

    Realistic targets

    1.Crouch – what for
    2.Pennant- crap
    3.Riise-crapper
    4.Bridge- no use
    5.Shorey- maybe
6.SWP- only guy to take club forward
    7.Sidwell- haha

I am so dissapointed we lost out on modric :(

i have a gut feeling , its going to be another sad transfer window .

  • 106 JC // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Nasher, Ronaldinho definitly has the skill and ability no question about that but the question is if he would want to play and give it everything, or would he just be a trophy signing because Barca wouldn’t let him leave unless he was past it

Veloso and Barton would be a tough CM for the opposition as both are hard working, great defensively, and have a great vision for a pass. Veloso hasnt got the vision or the ability to use both feet like modric, but he is much better defensively

  • 119 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 7:52 PM

My point was prick that the Intertoto is about as major as your Milk cup so should we be boasting..No because its embarassing, gloating over a tin pot trophy that no one cares about but each to their own

Whats your main ambition Champions league qualification well been there done that visited the nou camp and the san siro while you dream on.

    3rd

  • 123 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:00 PM

Veloso would be the perfect signing as he is a left footed DM and perfect compliment to the right footed AM Barton

Taylor and Faye big hairy arsed CBs no messing, SWP and McGeady bombing down the wings, Beye and Bridge overlapping and whipping in balls to Owen and Crouch who will score a hatful and compliment each other well with England

  • 124 Jonathon Sadler // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:01 PM

and mybe a back up LB – Konchesky but i think we dont need any fullbacks we already have Tozer Kadar and Edgar

  • 126 JC // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:02 PM

Is no-one not really p##sed with spurs because if its goes through that is modric and woodgate that they have snatched from our grasp when a deal looked iminent!!!!!!!!! R we not meant to be challenging them for Uefa places next season and we let them get a world class midfielder ahead of us for the sake of a few million. COMPLETE BS

  • 127 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:03 PM

WE could have won the league cup about 3 times over under Bobby Robson but we were concentrating on getting into the Champions league and challenging for the title.

Same under Keegan or Dalglish we could have approx 6 League cup wins in the last 15 years.

If you ever finish above 5th mate you may find there are more pressing matters than the Carling Cup

  • 128 valle // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:05 PM

    Adie read this…

“Luka really wanted to go to Newcastle, but they would not pay more,” a source in Zagreb told the Sunday Sun.

“Dinamo asked for £25 million and also Modric wanted a little more money in wages – but not much more.

“So it is strange that the transfer with Tottenham would be agreed for much less money.”

The guy is gutted that he is going to play infront of 39.000 fans at a club that spent weeks in the relegation zone… Ur upstairs guys where simply happy to pay that much, we werent… But keep telling yourself that your the better club, here in Denmark i can assure you that the general public as well as tv pundits and journalist’s see Newcasle as the biggest club by far, i doubt we even have a spurs supporters club over here.

Oh, and Berbatov sleeps in a Newcastle shirt and wishes he will play on our side next time we beat you 4-1 at your place.

  • 129 adie skyers // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:08 PM

  • 130 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:11 PM

  • 132 valle // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:12 PM

Craig… Its not about throphies… Last year spurs fans claimed that they where the bigger club because they finished above us… Guess we’re bigger this year then. Now they are bigger because they won the carling cup… guess porthsmouth will be bigger than them if they win the FA-cup then… Its all bull, there is no doubt that we’re the bigger and stronger side, but the only reason that small time clubs as spurs can argue that is because we give them an oportunity by not living up to our own standards… A club like ours shouldnt let spurs get the chance to make us look bad by paying more than us and getting our target, and our guys should win more than they have done, no excuses.

  • 133 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:13 PM

  • 141 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Yes and i doubt Modric will be as good as they think as theyre other players will drag him down to theyre obsure level.

Ive been privilaged to see the real Jonathan Woodgate live on a few occasions (when he was fit) and he is an awesome defender who can organise the back four making poor players look good (Bramble and O’Brien) and Spurs already have made him look bad, they need a lot more than Modric to finish above us next season now were playing real football.

i would suggest about 8 more players

  • 142 valle // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:21 PM

Fanbase, Economic power (The ability to have 100k a week players), stadium size, modern day champions league exp, better league finishes by far in the EPL history… Wanna hear more reasons?

  • 143 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:21 PM

    i will give you two.

    1. We have played on bigger stages than you (Champions League)

    2. We have challenged for the premier League title

Spurs have never come close to either apart from that year when Arsenal were shocking…and they STILL beat you to 4th lol

  • 144 valle // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:23 PM

Craigg… Modric is good, no doubt… But one player dosnt make a team, and we are not second in the form table for nothing… They can buy Kaka for all i care, we would still finish higher next season no doubt.

  • 145 CRAIGG // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:27 PM

The difference is Adie that we played:

Arsenals double winning side in 98 cup final
Man Utds treble winning side 1n 99 cup final

Spurs played Leicester in 99 League Cup final
Blackburn in 02 League cup final

That is why if we had taken the League cup more seriously we could have won it on a few occasions because the standard of teams that have reached the final are low.

Would you swap your Cup final appearance in 2002 and 9th place finish for our 4th place and Champions league qualification

I think we both know the answer.

  • 146 adie skyers // Apr 27, 2008 at 8:28 PM

surely the criterea to what makes a club a big club is history, trophies & a strong fanbase, not stadium size, not a rich chairman etc,ps all you lot have done is coat spurs of for having the cheek to buy a player that we were always going to compete for whoever wanted him,ps no the carling cup isnt a big deal but its a start, but its still a trophy

Simple fact is that we all know who this ‘newcastle source’ is and he needs stringing up, he really does.

He makes the story up and when it falls through, works as hard as he can to cover it up with rubbish counter stories such as this. This was standard transfer business and we missed out due to the standard reasons.

The problem is, a stunted ageing man, who believes he is of some importance to the Toon, has tried to make himself look clever [as usual] via the vaguest sniff of a rumour [as usual], got it wrong [as per bl**dy usual] and, I believe, ran to the NOTW [as per usual] in a bid to save some face; stoking patheic ‘rumour milling’ that some reaction has occured from KK, in lieu of the problem that never really existed – as we can see above.

Fair enough he brought in kanoute and alves but not exactly a brillant because half the team was already there but he did do well don’t get me wrong. Similar to man city at the start of the season.

  • 188 Oba // Apr 27, 2008 at 9:52 PM

Guys, guys, guys. Who’ve got to be more realistic with these transfer targets. Spouting the likes of Diego, VDV, Toulalan, and of all people AGUERO?!? None of these are realistic, and f**k me, if we get them it would be a huge shock. It aint going to happen. Think about it from a players perspective. We can’t offer them European football, and that’s our biggest disadvantage in the transfer market. It’s a shame because I believe if this Modric rumour was true, he would have chosen us over Spurs. Unfortunately it’s not the case, and also London is an attraction to many outsiders, especially eastern europeans, i.e. Modric.

Our only saving grace is the money we can offer to players, but I don’t want us to be spending millions and millions on players that would chose a club just because of money. That’s not my idea of moving forward, they’d show little effort and a prime example is Sidwell. If we get him I will quite possibly kill myself, he is clearly content in sitting on the Chelsea bench week in, week out, getting paid however much he is.

    These are the type of players I can see us getting, realistically, considering that we can offer them first team football, but not on the european stage;

    – Crouch – Underrated, undervalued, and underused. He’s good, no doubt about it. Okay, a bit gangly but has talent.

    – Bridge – Same as Crouch really. Both aren’t playing regularly enough, and are decent players that we can realistically attract. English as well.

    – Bentley – Don’t like him, at all, but he’s ability is awesome. Won’t be in Europe next year, I don’t think, and could be attracted to us.

As for the AMC role that I think we need, I can see us attracting Arshavin, but only for a small fee. It would be a big risk paying the sort of money Spurs have for this player. If no-one else is interested, especially London clubs, then I can see him being the obvious choice. Good player as well.

ed can you just stop this bickering and close this discussion ??? i like many i reckon didnt start using your blog to have playground arguments with oposition fans. quite the oposite the fact its been largely free of agrro with other clubs fans has whats kept me using it daily.

dont let your log be dragged down like so many football messagee boards.

addie im sure your just wanting to defend your club like all of us would and i do agree some of teh stuff written on here about spurs has made even me laugh and cringe at how stupid it has been. but your tone hasnt helped and you frankly you aint gong to get a reasoned argument teh way this discusion is heading are you.

id just pack it in trying to score points on another clubs blog is pointless really. im sure you be welcome back here when this arse of a discussion has finished as long as your not being childish and simply intent on winding anyone up.

Guys the comments on this page are hilarious, and quite delusional… Thanks for the entertainment.

Craigg you dont have a clue about Spanish football. Sevilla have been running on a shoe-string budget for a very long time, and still rarely spend big money on players, despite recent success. Newcastle have much to learn from Sevilla…

KK is a happy-chappy juvenile compared to Ramos. Both Spurs and Toon are big-headed small teams. Nothing wrong with that. Just deal with it!

    COYS!

P.S. There are way more Spurs fans than Newcastle fans around in Sweden. Could be it’s the other way around in Denmark, but then again they’ve always been a bit strange over there ;)

  • 192 valle // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:45 PM

Adie… First off, with a fanbase of slightly under 2 million you wouldnt be the 4th biggest in the EPL with even Man city bigger (They have a fanbase of over 2 million). And as i told you earlier, i doubt there is even a supporters club for spurs here in Denmark where the EPL is very popular, so i doubt you are doing better anywere else outside England… You can keep lying to yourself, but facts that you have been served here on this blog (and failed to answer) have shown that Spurs are in fact smaller than us (And clubs such as Man City, Aston Villa and Everton btw)

  • 193 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:51 PM

guys i just read on newsnow that Tottenham are set to try and lure McGeady away from Celtic, another player who we were said to be interested in, and a lot of people on here would like to see him in a black and white shirt. What do people think?

  • 194 JJ // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:53 PM

Adie, you are talking about fanbase in England. We are talking about Worldwide fan base.
Most of the people on this site are not even form the UK.
I am from Africa for example. Were outside of the top 4. Newcastelis without a doubt the most talked about and most popular club on the continent.
Spurs is just another London club, slighter better known than Charlton, and West Ham.

  • 195 JJ // Apr 27, 2008 at 10:55 PM

Tottenham will have another 10mil tops to spend. And even if they get McGeady, they will only have 3 good players next year. (the third is Keane). Berbatov wont be there.

  • 196 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 11:03 PM

they will spend more then that JJ, i predict they will spend around 20million more on about 3 players yet. You get the feeling Tottenham are going for broke this summer as they will know they have lost ground with this poor season.

  • 197 valle // Apr 27, 2008 at 11:08 PM

difficult to say how much they will spend… Dosnt really matter, they can spend 50 million more and they will still be after the likes of us and Everton as well as Aston Villa.

  • 198 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 11:20 PM

It is clear that Newcastle and Tottenham will share the same targets this summer as our teams are weak in similar areas and we are closely positioned in the league. Who would have thought Spurs winning the Carling Cup would end up so bad for us, as no doubt most on here were happy when they beat Chelsea that day. It is indeed ironic how many of us would love Chelsea to have won that match now eh. Spurs would have no way made Europe this year due to their poor start and their attractiveness for top players would have been seriously pegged back, meaning we would have been able to compete with them easily. In a sense, their poor form in the league has proved beneficial for them as it gave them the motivation to push for the Carling Cup, resulting in them qualifying for Europe early, and getting a head start on transfers over such teams as Aston Villa, Everton or Portsmouth.

As much as i hate to admit it, Spurs are likely to do well next year as they now have first pick of all the top players right now as they are the only team in Europe twiddling their thumbs at the minute. Whilst we will have to wait for the UEFA cup teams to clear up before we can properly attract the talent we all crave to see at SJP. oh well. we can only hope and pray.

  • 200 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 11:34 PM

alright rich, im a bit gutted about the Modric situation (not as much as some on here), but not about losing Modric…if that makes sense. I have said on many occasions he is not one of a kind and we can find players equal to, or better than him if we try hard enough. However, i am just disappointed about how the whole thing panned out, with Spurs just coming in and taking him from us, it really put things into perspective for me i think. I think most of the reason people on here are so disappointed with the Modric situation is not actually to do with the boys talent, even though he has got talent and there is no denying this. I think the majority are annoyed because before the Modric stuff came about most on here didnt really have high hopes for signing any sought after superstars. So when the news did come out everyone was lifted for a bit, only to be brought crashing down by a team we all despise.

    For instance-
Wise, Jimenez,Vitere triumvirate with a lack of the power of persuasion
Ashley and his hold of the purse strings
    And my guess-
Modric’s club chairman/ agent trying to get a little more-not for his client, but for himself.
What I’m pretty sure of, it’s not my fault!

  • 209 Spyro // Apr 27, 2008 at 11:45 PM

i hope not, any player we get from a EPL team that is not getting relegated is going to be overpriced and we will end up wasting our transfer budget. I would prefer to go for some Scottish league players instead

What we need to do is aim for a central midfield player who can act as the engine to our team, and try and get him at all costs. Thats what Spurs did with Modric and we should do the same. I too believe a team should not be held to ransom, but i also feel every now and then players pop up who should be bought at all costs. we just have to find that player eh, lol

  • 221 Spyro // Apr 28, 2008 at 1:03 AM

Bentley is class but he would cost more than he is worth. Would not get him any cheaper than 12million or so. Also, his wages would be sky high as he’s an arrogant little shit who knows the top teams are watching him, and im sure his agent knows too

Arshavin is now seeming like a decent buy if we can get him for around 5 million. Veloso should be our main target now though, him and Barton should be the engine of our team for the future and we should offer anything up to 20million for him. He is a great future prospect and i would love him here at any cost

  • 222 NufcILove // Apr 28, 2008 at 1:35 AM

mcgeidy should be snapped up .
and we were linked with kuzmanovic earlier in the season , throw in a 15mill bid for him , young talented and be with us for years .

im annoyed by the modric deal , but the one major thing we have going for us is keegan thinks the same as the rest of us , and proved it once again by transfer targets .

  • 228 KKN39 // Apr 28, 2008 at 6:15 AM

agreed w/ some that we should snap up good players from relegated teams, Larsson, Zarate, Cahill, Barnes are all decent young chaps that worth a go at relatively low prices. Arshavin and Boussoufa may be two of the most skilful players we can attract at the moment. go for them before too late. if we struggle to get good players i’d rather keep Emre and Duff and try to be more patient w/ Zog.

  • 229 KKN39 // Apr 28, 2008 at 6:17 AM

gutted at the Modric fiasco but we can look at the bright side – Toffees never try, nor can attract high-profile “stars” on their book yet they ease their way through to Europe. if we can do the same next season it’s already a great leap. by then maybe we can dream about Diego or some other “superstars”. for now KK, Wise and whoever should just work hard to get down-to-earth players who are willing to fight for us.

  • 230 51times // Apr 28, 2008 at 6:51 AM

Modric, 15 million is too much to pay for a player who really has had a few good games for his country & plays for a club in a third rate league.

Not the end of the world. I would go for Lucho Gonzalez from Porto & Diego or Van der Vaart. They proven performers!!! Second of which, we need to sign Bafetimbi Gomis, he is still scoring in France & looks excellent. YouTube him you don’t believe me!

  • 239 Birdman // Apr 28, 2008 at 10:01 AM

There has been alot of speculation that Tottenham swooped in with more money for Modric however it was reported that Tottenham have been in talks with Modric for a much longer time than Newcastle. Newcastles reported interest was only recent compared to other clubs. Tottenham also have European football next season and have won silverware this year and therefore are a more attractive team to join than Newcastle! Not to mention that Luka himself said his “favourite from the first meeting was Tottenham because I am a big fan of coach Ramos”.

I do believe that Newcastle will sign some great players this season. However some fans seem slightly delusional listing names like Van Der Vaart, Diego, Aguero and even Fabiano (would these really choose the black and white over Europes finest?). I don’t want to seem anti-toon but i just feel the fans need to be realistic, ensure owen and others sign contract renewals, sign some young decent talent (Zarate, Barnes, McFadden and the slightly older Jimmy Bullard) and ship out the dead weight (Alan Smith, Damien Duff and co)! Do this, give it a few years and they will be capable of breaking the top four!

By the way i live in Scotland, and while McGeady is great in the SPL, hes only got one trick (Ballet spin – check on youtube) which would soon wear off in the premiership!

Birdman… Im glad your not going to be the one running our transfers or we would be stuck in mid table forever… Ofc we can get great names… Do you seriously think that Owen would have ever come to spurs? or what about Duff and Parker that we stole from under your noses?… This one slipped our fingers, but it dosnt spell the future, people close to Modric claimed he wanted to come to the toon, and in regards to his quote… What did you expect him to say?, “its ok to have joined spurs but to be frank i really wanted Newcastle, well here’s hoping”. Our owners didnt want to go to the price your guys paid, simple as that. It sucks imo because i think you guys where allowed to win both the transfer and put even more wood on the ever burning spurs fans ego.

Keegan gave an interview with the times or the telegraph I can’t remember which one it was. Anyway he said that we wouldn’t be able to attract the top class or top notch players anymore due to where we are. He has said we need to look at more realistic targets.
So, even Keegan is being sensible about our transfer targets, how about some of you lot doing the same.
As long as we sign people who can improve the team I don’t care if they come from a 2nd division club.
Players like Ronaldinho aren’t going to sign for us. Berbatov certainly isn’t.
We need to look at the likes of Sidwell, Lennon, SWP to get us back up the table and into Europe. Then we can start to look at the big names.
Also, can we stop with the bollocks about MA and the spuds? Does anyone really think that we line up players and somehow let spurs into “the big secret” so they can steal them away. Perhaps MA loaned some money to spurs.
MA is the owner of NUFC. He wants what is best for NUFC. A lot of people on here put a lot of faith and treat KK’s word as the be all and end, so why suddenly are we believing what the NOTW is saying. I though all southern based newspapers were full of crap and we hate them all.Apparently only when it suits eh?

In response to the comments posted by Valle.

Firstly I am not a Tottenham supporter, I just felt that it was obvious that rumours that Tottenham offered a much larger offer for Modric was fabricated by disgruntled Newcastle fans.

It is true that Newcastle can attract some big name players but the names being thrown around are pure fantasy! Owen was a great signing but I think if you recall there were very few clubs interested in Owen who were willing or able to pay his 110k a week wages. It is also true that Tottenham were interested in both Duff and Parker but both players stated that they could not play for one of Chelseas rivals and that this was a huge factor in their decision. I think we can all agree that these are not great names. Duff has not exactly set the Prem on fire since his move and I believe the majority of Tottenham fans will be pleased that they lost out on him. Parker is a good player but if he is such a great name why did Newcastle flog him to West Ham?

The players mentioned (Zarate, Barnes, McFadden and Bullard) would all be good buys which the majority of clubs outside the top four would consider. However we will have to wait and see what Newcastles ‘Chief Executive Director of Scouting Operations and Head of Transfer Wheeling and Dealings’ Wise (I think that’s his correct title?) brings in.

It is true that Tottenham fans have an over inflated ego, but Newcastle fans ego is equally large or possibly greater. Tottenham in the past three seasons finished 5th twice in the premiership and have won a carling cup compared to Newcastles ………? Also in the past two years Tottenham have gone further in ALL competitions than Newcastle, so who should be able to attract the so called greater players?

Who cares, let’s push the Spurs into the sea…

  • 248 valle // Apr 28, 2008 at 3:09 PM

Birdman… I very much doubt that Spurs have got themselves a big club tag on account of the last two seasons, and if you look at the premier league since Newcastle returned, spurs have finished lower than us in almost all of them, never getting into champs league… I very much doubt that you dont support spurs on account of your memory in spurs related transfers 4 seasons ago, but you are missing the point, Duff not turning out to be what we supposed he would (Same with Parker) has nothing to do with the fact that spurs where interested in these players at the time, but simply couldnt compete with Newcastle… Parker never mentioned chelsea’s rivalry in his reasons to reject spurs, that was Duff, and he added that he would have chosen Newcastle after Chelsea anyway because he wanted the chance to play at our great St. James in front of what he described as fanathical fans… It really annoys me that spurs fans can even get it into their head that they are bigger than Newcastle, the are smaller in every way (Fanbase, Stadium, Modern history, Economic power, Modern day Legends and so on)… Spurs do have one thing that counts in their favour tho, they play in London and they have Europe next season, thats it really.

They have Mossad agents forcing players to join them too :D

  • 251 Birdman // Apr 28, 2008 at 3:57 PM

    Valle,
I can assure you I am not a spurs fan but my apologies for having an interest in teams other than my club.

It is true in the past that Newcastle may have been a more attractive club to join but the situation as it currently stands is very different. I did not say Tottenham were a bigger club than Newcastle I merely stated the obvious that Tottenham are more attractive team to join (Europe and looking like they might break top 4). Newcastle may have finished above Tottenham in the distant past but that does act as any encouragement for player to join. Players have recently proved this point by opting for White Hart Lane instead for St James (a certain fans favourite, Jono Woodgate and more recent Modric).

You listed a number of reasons why Newcastle are a larger club: Fanbase, Stadium, Economic power, Modern history, Modern day Legends, Location (London) and European football. Firstly I am unable to confirm or deny that Newcastle have a larger fan base. However Tottenham are currently planning a stadium which will be much larger than Newcastles current. Tottenham can also be considered a greater economic power than Newcastle, as they are part owned by Joe Lewis, the second richest man in English football (worth well over £2billion, more than Mike ‘spurs supporting’ Ashley!). Tottenham are also placed 11th in the Football Rich list compared to Newcastles 14th based on club revenues for the previous season (06/07). Modern day history is also a questionable one as Tottenhams success has been much more recent. I cannot begin to remember the last time Newcastle made any sort of history (wikipedia informs you won the league in 1927, inter toto doesn’t count!). Tottenham have also had their fair share of modern day legends (I believe they stole a few of yours Gazza and Ginola). I agree that London and European football are also major factors for many top players when deciding on a club, two things Newcastle doesn’t have!

  • 252 valle // Apr 28, 2008 at 4:22 PM

Tottenhams alleged new stadium will properly happen as soon as we expand ours to 66.000… Economic power is imo not meassured by the owners money, but rather the clubs economic strenght… Richest clubs is meassured by your net total turnover which rather fails to include the fact that our income makes it possible to keep 100k a week players (which we have and therefor have a much larger net expenses than spurs)…. Modern day history cant just be meassured by the last 3 seasons, if that was the case, the club with the most success as we speak would always be the one who topped (failing to live up to the word History)and you we never spoke of throphies, but instead of looking at wiki, try to find a league standing since the EPL was formed and compare the two, then add Newcastles 2 times in the Champs league in that time, as well as at least double the UEFA cup app than spurs. Ginola was great for Newcastle and although he failed to get spurs anywhere near top 4 i agree that he was also good there. He can hardly be described as a legend in the game tho alonside of our former legend Shearer and current one Owen… Gazza is, but you fail to mention that he only played 2 seasons for spurs, leaving them for Lazio, which dosnt really connect him that much to spurs… And it all boils down to my last point… Only reason Spurs are curently able to land players ahead of us is that they have London and Europe. If they fail to reach europe next year its back to the drawing board for them, while we still have all the other factors going for us, even after suffering years of bad management and leading… As Bilic said “NUFC are in the range of Chelsea, Leeds United and Aston Villa but can invest a lot more money in new signings than let’s say Tottenham.”

“Also it’s more likely that Newcastle will be English champions than Tottenham.” “Luka wouldn’t be making a mistake if he signs for The Magpies.”

Just thought i would share an outsiders opinion with you…

And BTW, you dont have to apologize for having an interest in teams other than your own, but since you have an interest in spurs i could still argue that you are biased towards them…

Tottenham’s new stadium is also planned at around the 65,000 mark so this makes it irrelevant. Newcastles 2007 proposal for an expansion was for an additional 8,000 to make it 60,000. However you could not get planning permission for an expansion due to the listed buildings at the strawberry place.

Tottenham have a strict wage structure which has benefited the club. Tottenham are able to spend 100k a week on one player (as Newcastle do), but CHOOSE not to and therefore have a greater profit. This wage budget still continues to allows Spurs to be economically strong and compete with other big spenders to get players such as Woodgate, Modric, etc.

Do players really look at where team finished 10 / 20 years ago when they consider joining a club? Or do they look at what a team has won? Do they consider previous teams they might have played in? Or do they look at the current team they could play in?

David Ginola won the PFA players player of the year, the football writers footballer of the year and the League Cup whilst playing for Tottenham and failed to win anything at Newcastle. This therefore implies that he was better for Spurs. Paul Gascoigne played exactly 92 times for both Tottenham and Newcastle, so?.

If you are calling Owen a legend you are really scraping the barrel, he’s barely played 40 games for you! (does this mean he was a legend at Real then?). Theres no denying shearer is a legend (as the berba picture shows) but what did he win? and one player doesn’t make you great!

Bilic also said “Tottenham is a perfect club for Luka”. Bilic, as an outsider, cannot be considered a reliable source as he also said Leeds (who are currently in League one) can invest more money in signings than spurs?

    Cracking snap!

  • 255 Leo // Apr 28, 2008 at 6:25 PM

what are you banging on about, you obviously know nothing, spurs have a strict wage cap, but the fact is that they have so many players that they have to have a strict wage cap you idiot.

  • 256 valle // Apr 28, 2008 at 7:17 PM

Mate you are contradicting yourself and stating false facts now, it clearly shows your on thin ice and the reading you have been doing to catch up with me on these matters have been done a little to quick… We did not get denial to expand, the parts of the stadium that was under consideration for expansion itsnt near the listed buildings… There was a lot of talk between fans tho, why we didnt just expand all the sides of the park to which the listed buildings fact was mentioned. So you mixed the things together and came out wrong mate… Tottenhams wage structure that allows them to compete is adding to my point, thats a small club trying to compete… Tottenham will never get 65.000 gates on average and you know it… I didnt say Owen was a legend for the number of games he has played with us, but he is still here and hopefully for him he will break the England record while he is here, he is a legend none the less… However, i find it ironic that you should mention that, since both Gazza and Ginola played at your club only 2 seasons, hardly spurs legends either of them, even if you consider Ginola a legend (which i find an abuse of the word, the criteria for being a legend is surely higher)… I do think the teams progress over the last 10-20 years matters… Allot of kids who watched football when KK and Bobby where around and we played champs league will be grown footballers today, spurs was playing mid table throughout the EPL history till 3 seasons ago… You are on thin ice and your arguments are becomming a bit far fetched now… Its all “tottenham WILL get a big stadium” “tottenham CHOOSE not to have players which demand allot of money” as well as misunderstood facts.

  • 257 valle // Apr 28, 2008 at 7:19 PM

Leo… He dosnt know what he is talking about, he is simply reading up on it and get allot of it wrong in the process.
