We’re mystified that the popular press profess not to know the role of Dennis Wise and the recruitment team at Newcastle.
Dennis and Kevin – working closely together at Newcastle
But maybe they don’t want to know, and seem to continue to try to report it as a potential problem at the club. Give us a break.
Only Kevin Keegan will be the one that decides which players Newcastle sign, nobody else, and it’s Dennis’ job to scout the players Kevin wants and other players whom Kevin may not be aware of.
But the final decision lies with Kevin and there’s no ifs, ands or buts about that.
Kevin talked about the set up to Sky Sports News:
“’Dennis and Tony are not there to say: ‘We’ve got to sign this player’. They’re there to say: ‘You should go and look at this player’ – and that’s how it’s working,â€
‘They’ve already put names forward but, until we see them, they won’t come into this football club. If we think like Dennis and Tony do when we see them, we’d love to have them at Newcastle.â€
“If they bring players in and they’re not my players I wouldn’t be managing this football club.†‘Dennis and I talk a lot. We had a meeting two weeks ago, took our list in and they put theirs down. They have a massive database of all parts of Europe and South America.â€
It’s reported that many names are South American based players but it appears that Keegan is not too keen on bringing players over since these moves rarely seem to work out.
“I’m less keen on South American players coming into this country, that doesn’t mean we won’t get any but it’s a big move for them. I would prefer to sign players with Premier League experience. I think there is probably a balance between the two.â€
“As far as their list goes, we’ll be flying off over the next three or four weeks to look at the players we don’t know. We know their names but there are one or two on the list from Dennis that I haven’t seen play.â€
“We’re going to work together. We’ve got no reason not to. Nothing that Dennis is doing at this club is in any way detrimental to me doing my job.â€
We think the structure that Chris Mort has put in place can work very well indeed. It’s also right, just on the averages, that South American players seem to be less successful in England, but the very best will be good anywhere.
We don’t mind it at all if Keegan signs South Americans, and Argentine and Brazil players of course are the very best.
We’ll just need to see who we finally get in the summer, but it’s going to be exciting, that’s for sure.
