For the first time in a long time, a number of Newcastle players didn’t turn up for the game at West Ham yesterday, at least not at the start.
Oba Martins – went 100% from the first whistle
It was like days of old as there seemed to be only one team on the park for the first 40 minutes of yesterday’s game. And West Ham went ahead by 2-0 through goals from Noble and Ashton before Newcastle woke up.
In all honesty it could, and probably should, have been more than two.
That was the disappointing thing about yesterday’s game. And we’re not sure how much the absense of Faye had to do with the poor start, although it looks young Edgar was again drafted into the team at the last minute.
After the game Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan said:
“I’d sooner be a lucky manager than a good one, to be honest,’â€
“Alex Ferguson’s a very lucky manager. We didn’t deserve to be 2-2, but second half we showed a bit of character.â€
“ West Ham started the brighter and, with the run of play, they took a deserved lead.â€
But to Newcastle’s credit Martins got them right back in the game with a great opportunist goal after 42 minutes, when he quickly got the ball and had it past Green before the West Ham goalkeeper knew what had happened.
Then just before half time, Martins had a blockbuster of a shot that somehow Geremi directed with his head past Green and Newcastle were amazingly level 2-2 at the break.
But a Kevin Keegan team will always be able to score goals and so it was yesterday.
For us, our best man yesterday was Oba Martins, who scored one and made one and worked his socks off. He looked menacing throughout and anybody watching could see what a match-winner this guy can be in the future, when he gets even better.
Kevin admitted after the game he’s never seen anybody like Oba as he said:
“He’s a real one-off. I’ve never handled a player like him,” “He does fantastic things and he is more of a team player now.”
We really hope Kevin makes Martins part of his plans for next season, because this boy is just too good to have play a bit role at Newcastle. But hey, did anyone else notice Oba didn’t do his customary somersault after the goal?
Say it aint so Oba! 😀
