Newcastle To Pay Big Money For Big Players

The Newcastle United manager has no fear of making a deal which would cost the club up to £25M for a single player and beat the Tyneside club’s transfer record.

Kevin Keegan – will pay £25M for a single player

Kevin Keegan spoke to the Sunday Sun today:

“Spending £25 million on one player doesn’t frighten me one bit,”

“You have to target big players. If you have a budget, it’s like any budget: if you have ‘X’ million, you can divide it into one or two players, or four or five.”

“We’ll be in there pitching for some very good players. If you don’t bowl, you can’t knock the wickets down. We might get hit for six, but we might get a wicket.”

But we lost out on Modric, and that was presumably because we offered £20M, but Dinamo Zagreb wanted £25M, and if we had paid the extra £5M, Luka would have been a Newcastle player today.

But given what happened late Friday night Keegan sounded a note of caution.

“We may end up on July 7 with no one because we don’t offer them enough – and I don’t mean just financially.”

“You hear Thierry Henry say he wants to be back in London, and that is a well known fact with a lot of foreign players,”

“It helps Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal and works against us.” “But we are where we are. We’re not going to move this franchise like they do in America.”

“Players have to move here, they have to live here, they have to put up with the weather and they have to enjoy playing in this stadium.”

But we have probed that that doesn’t put off players since Luka Modric was very keen to move to Newcastle, but the club wouldn’t budge past the £20M fee.

Being so near to capturing a fantastic player, there hopefully will be some explanation on what really happened, so at least Newcastle fans know what the situation is.

Neither would come, regardless of how much we play their CLUB. Its not like we are paying them that amount.

    Spend some on Montolivo

And Sergio Aguero if i might add and De Rossi.

I guess he has found out why Modric opt for Spurs instead of us.

If we can’t get players to sign permanently, lets get them on loan, yea gaffer!

Anyone know why July 7th in particular?

We need to be realistec here and the players we can attract ATM are players like RIISE,SHOREY,ASHTON,SIDWELL,BRIDGE, these are the sort of players we have a chance on but the likes of DIEGO,VAN DE VAART, and players like that are a little out of reach. We are not i Europe and have little chance of winning the PL so apart form playing in front of fifty two thousand fans every week were is the attraction to come to NUFC?

One thing hte club should of learned with Modric is that you have to act fast. Tie up the deals before it gets out hte at the player is available.
I can see that the club are not going to be held to ransom by players clubs or agents – but for the sake of 1 million we have lost a great player – although we did think that about hte young Euro player of hte year that was Vianna. Hopefully spuds will find another player of that type in Modric after all the did pay 18 million for Bent Ha Ha ha Ha

I don’t think it is easy to sign top players, but we can always bid. Inflate price of players and let our competitors to spend more money would do no harms to us too.

I wouldn’t feel too bad if we were rejected by Modric because he wanted European football. That would mean he is not for us. But I am deeply disappointed because we seem failed to match other’s bid.

Toon1978 – if that the type of player you are after then forget next year and I think KK would walk. They would cost well over the odds (6 milliom for Riise !!!!!) becasue they are EPL players and non e of them are setting the world on fire.

Simply put they are no better than what we already have.

I think paying a little more for players is something we are just going to have to accept.

Most “big-name” players want to be where their wages give them a great lifestyle. In the EPL that means London, that whilst Newcastle has a reasonable quality of life it obviously isn’t a patch on what London has to offer the extremely wealthy footballer.

Because Newcastle can’t offer the same lifestyle it needs to offer something else. The easiest thing to offer that may compensate the players we want is to offer them a little more money.

I think until we accept the fact that we will have to pay players what they are worth plus a 10%-20% premium we will continue to loose players like Modric to lesser clubs that are in or near London.

Stephen Appiah as a replacement for Nicky Butt. Powerfull, experienced and scores goals. Plays a bit like Essien in midfield. He may leave Fenerbahçe for Premier League football.

it is very simple, there is no point being held ransom. all this talk about paying a little more does not necessary mean it will bring in the results. Frankly, I feel it is good that the club refused to budge.

Seems like Keegan is saying I’m not scared of paying £25M on one player but I’m not going too because I need more than 1 or 2 signings thank you very much. Maybe Spuds think they only need 1 or 2 players for next season but I think KK knows he need 4 or 5 new ones.
I posted this on an earlier blog on Modric.

When the rumours 1st started ‘he was available for £12M’ now it seems like Spurs have paid the full asking price of £25M. At £12M he was worth it but at £25M? I don’t think so.
It seems good to me that the new regime will not pay over the odds for players that they have targerted, Spurs have been held to ransom in the fear that one of their targets was about to sign for us and have had to pay well over the odds for him. He’s a good player no doubts but it seems like NUFC are looking to buy equally or better talents before their reputation bumps their price up. Good business sense I think, why pay £25m for 1 player with a reputation as a very good player when we could buy 2 or 3 up and coming talents that the press haven’t hyped up yet. Think about it, that is why Wise and co have beeen brought in to do scout out the up and coming talent. Just about everyone across Europe knew about Modric so it’s no brainer that someone was going to sign him, no scouting genius their my friends, lets wait and see what happens in the transfer window Eh?

Appiah would be a fantastic signing.

We aren’t going to get any top players from the big leagues eg. Van der Vaart/Diego (Germany). I’m not sure we will even get Montolivio since Fiorentina may well make the CL next year.

Modric came from Croatia and that’s why we had a chance of getting him.

We need to raid the weaker leagues eg. Russia (Arshavin), Scotland (McGeady), Portugal(Veloso) and maybe even Turkey (Appiah) for players. These are players we can get. Not VDV/Diego etc.

Has anyone else read these reports today, quoted in the newspapers:
    THE PEOPLE:
Kevin Keegan wants to bring a £25million superstar to Newcastle this summer.

    SUNDAY EXPRESS
Dimitar Berbatov will leave Spurs this summer – to whoever is prepared to cough up the £25million asking price.

    Could these be linked? 🙂

maybe we cant pull of signings of Diego of VDV but I really hope we have a go – from what KK has been saying I think we are going to be testing the waters with those sort of players after reading his cricket comments, hopefully we will get a wicket – the worst that would happen from us trying for these players is that we would inflate prices for other teams leading to them having less money for others – also, our ambitions would be realised

I’m not surprised in the slightest…Mort has already signalled Ashley’s intentions of keeping the purse strings tighter than a duck’s rear cavity. All this talk about how we ‘won’t be anyones mugs ‘ in the transfer market and how we won’t be making any more ‘trophy signings’ is merely to prepare the fans for more disappointment in the summer. Let’s not forget that Ashley has only spent 9m on the first team so far and that last season we were outspent by just about everyone – including the mighty Scumderland! I sincerely hope I’m wrong, but I’ve got ‘that feeling’ again – we are going to have to lower our sights yet again. Apparently there are a few players plying their trade for Jarrow Roofing and Seaham Bluestar that we’re watching at the minute – and until Ashley releases some real funds, I’ll refuse to get excited in any way about transfer rumours…and not before!
