Chelsea Game Should Be A Classic

Our last home game at St. James’ Park is a week today against Chelsea, and it promises to be another classic game, as Chelsea are in the running for the Premier League title once again under their new manager Avram Grant.

A smiling Avram Grant – really

Grant has come in for lots of criticism this season, yet we notice Chelsea keeps winning games. It’s true that Chelsea may not be playing attractive football right now but the Israeli seems to have no trouble in getting the players revved up for their games.

Avram is also good for people who suffer from depression, because he always looks so down and depressed, and hardly ever smiles. 😀

However, we’ve seen him before games warmly talking to the opposing manager, as he did with Alex Ferguson on Saturday. We stress that was before the games ended in Chelsea’s favor. We’d love for Chelsea to win the European Champions Cup, just so we can see the man celebrate. We think he’s a real character and good for the game.

Newcastle always do well against Chelsea, who always seem to visit us in the league at the end of the season, and we think the game will be a good measure for how much we’ve progressed under Kevin Keegan.

Geremi of course was at Chelsea for a while and he knows their players well. But Geremi is also looking for Newcastle to improve their squad in the summer and he spoke to the Newcastle Journal this morning:

“It’s very important that we spend money in the transfer market this summer,” “We all know the intention of the club next year – we want to be in the top six next season, that is the aim of everyone.”

“I’m not the chairman, I don’t know how much he will spend. But if you want to challenge in the top six you need a big squad because it’s not easy to challenge in this league – you need a lot of good players.”

“The manager has already said to us that next year we go for it with the top six. The Chelsea game is a test – let’s see what happens.”

Geremi is a very popular player at the clubs he has been at and that was true at Chelsea. Indeed when he left Jose Mourinho went out of his way to say what a great guy Geremi had been at the club and he was a wonderful club player.

The Cameroon International has kewpt in touch with his former Chelsea team mates and it’s not surprising that they have noticed the improved form of last, and not only that, but the positive attacking football Newcastle are now playing under King Kevin.

Chelsea kept their title dreams alive with a tremendous 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Saturday, and the usually very placid Grant was seen to jump is the air, celebrate and even smile when Chelsea scored.

It will at the very least, be another fabulous atmosphere at St. James’ Park for the game and of course another sell out, but we’ll just have to see if Chelsea are good enough to beat a much improved Newcastle side.

Geremi continued:

“I have spoken to people at Chelsea and they have noticed how well we are doing. They said to me, ‘Oh, you’re playing well’ and they don’t expect an easy game,”

“They know I will be competing hard. I’m a Newcastle player now and there are big demands from your manager, the fans and your other players, so you’re not just going to roll over and give them the title.

“If you want to win a league title, you have to fight. I am still friends with people from Chelsea, they know the position I am in.”

After a tough first season at Newcastle, Geremi has come into his own under Kevin Keegan, who seems to know hos to bring the best out of every player under him. Not sure how he does it, but it’s just great to see the players who were struggling earlier in the season now in full flow.

But that’s what a good manager does – and Kevin is better than just good – he’s great.

This game is going to be hard for me. NUFC were the first football team I ever supported because my extended family lived in Newcastle. Now days though, I live in London, right next to Stamford Bridge actually and have been to a few Chelsea matches and have come to really like the team (well, most of the team). This one is hard because Chelsea need the game more than Newcastle do. That, and there’s nothing worse than watching Man Utd win the title, I can’t stand them. I’m sorry guys.

I do dislike Man United a lot and don’t really want them to win the title…but I’m a Geordie through and through so I have to want a win.

I dislike both Chelsea and Man U. I don’t care who takes the title … I’m a GEORDIE and I do care about beating Chelsea and getting another 3 points! To hell with the league title this year. Its up to them to try and win it. Its up to us to try and beat Chelsea and go 8 games unbeaten. Geordie pride… to hell with who wins thew title!!!

Exactly. Who cares who wins the title, You only deserve to win the title when you play teams like us away from home. If you win us in the cauldron of noise then I can say fair play you deserved it. But it’s about Newcastle and pushing for that 10th place. Howay the lads!!
