Kevin Keegan is reported today to have made his first moves to strengthen the defense by making an official enquiry for Manchester City 28 year-old defender Richard Dunne.

Richard Dunne - Newcastle make official inquiry
Keegan has said that he would prefer proven Premiership players and Richard Dunne is certainly that having been outstanding for Manchester City over the last 3 seasons, and Richard is certainly a leader.
On this site a lot of our readers have not been too excited by Newcastle pursuing Dunne, but we think he could be a good acquisition for us. Seem like it’s either Dunne or Rangers’ 26 year-old Spanish center-back Carlos Cuella.

Carlos Cuella - 6′3″ center back has played well for Rangers
The advantage Dunne has over Carlos Cuella is that’s he’s a proven Premiership player, although we hear great reports from Scotland about Cuella.
Dunne is likely to cost around £5M, although he has only one year left on his contract, and things at City may be shaken up if indeed Thailand owner Thaksin Shinawatra sacks Sven Eriksson, as he’s threatened to do.
That looks even more likely now that Fulham got 3 goals in the last 20 minutes at City on Saturday, which was an embarrassing 3-2 loss for Sven.
Kevin of course worked with the 6’2†centre-back during his four years in charge of City between 2001 and 2005, and believes Dunne’s uncompromising play is exactly what Newcastle need at the back.
We actually think Dunne would be a good buy for us, as the risk of this signing would be minimal.
What do you think? Who would be the better buy between Dunne and Cuella for Newcastle?
Cuella would probably cost around £3 -£4M.
Let us know - comments and opinions welcomed.

Cuella has said he wants to stay with Rangers…I would prefer Van Buyten to both but if I had to choose I’d get Dunne.

Totally agree 51 times. I’d try for both Dunne and Van Buyten.

how depressing!! no matter how much i try to shake off the dissapointment of losing out on modric i cant, please bring in someone who will actualy make us smile when reading the news on here, iv never ever been happer than i was reading the headlines MODRIC TO NEWCASTLE- DONE DEAL? NOT HAPPY BLOODY TIMES
4 Gooderz // Apr 28, 2008 at 11:36
Tough choice really. Dunne has the experience Keegan is after, but Cuellar could help Enrique’s game.
But why not get both as our 1st choice partnership. Faye could then compete with Butt for a place in the team, so we could sign a good young player who’d have plenty of time to develop into that role in the team.

Dunne would be my first choice…
Van Buyten on the other hand is utter shite just like roz

I dont want Dunne, he has been CRAP ever since Micah has been out of the team. Micah was making him look good. We can do better

I guess he could be our only star signing…as things are going these days
But we might get a real cracker when all the other clubs already spent to much money now and the real pearls are still not discovered

13 Nick Dryden // Apr 28, 2008 at 11:50
Ed - Fulham got 3 goals not Bolton. Bolton is an Allardyce formed team remember - 3 goals I don’t think so!!
Ed like Riise, Dunne is a journeyman and not a naturally skilful and classy footballer. We already have Carr - similiar type!!
The only bad signing from the previous KK era was Warren Barton. This would be similiar. Simply not good enough and a waste of 5m whether he has Pl experience or not. There are some absolute donkeys with plenty of PL experience. CuellaRRRRR - not sure about.
14 Spyro // Apr 28, 2008 at 11:52

we can pay spurs 25m plus Zog for berbatov, who may consider joining us if we offer him 150k a week plus 20k per goal he scores. we’ve already missed out on Modric so Ashley pls show us the $ and buy big names!!!

Manchester Citys owner is Thai as in from Thailand , not Taiwanese. Trust me - i live in Taiwan and spend alot of time in Thailand. PS: Reckon Dunne would be decent acquisition not sure about Cuella yet ! Are we not being linked with anyother center halfs?
22 Donovan // Apr 28, 2008 at 12:19
come on guys,,, dunne… he is ok but not the quality newcastle deserve.
Metzelder, bridge,, their are two we need to improve our back 4. Beye is quality, Taylor needs some on beside him to show him what he needs to know. Faye isnt good enough, not bad but not good enough
from 1 - 8 i will tell u who newcaslte should go for
1 - Metzelder
2 - Bridge
3 - Diego
4 - Joao Moutinho
5 - Huntelaar (Quality)
6 - Juninho Pernambucano
7 - Bentley
8 - Ricardo Quaresma
If you want success then this is a possible starter. Yeah expensive but would come to a club like newcastle if the price was right

Ceullar without a shadow of doubt.
I was watch him play in the Eufa Cup three times and he has always been outstading against quality sides.
Reads the game brilliantly and would partner Faye superbly.
Dunne is too similar to Faye.
If we could get Cuellar for 4mil which I doubt considering Boumsong cost 8mil. It would be a snip. And Id be happy that our DC positions are covered.

geordie in taipei is right. That guy is from Thailand. I’m a Taiwanese and I cann’t be wrong with this. :()
By the way, Duune is good, I’ve nothing against him and I think most people wouldn’t mind having him in our starting 11. It is just we, as fans, are hoping for a morale lifting signing and signing Dunne would not fulfill that need.
26 JJ // Apr 28, 2008 at 12:35
No, why would we want juninho, he is great but would be too slow in the Eng Prem.
Metzelder would be great tho.
Plus the new formation works great why change it
27 Bill F // Apr 28, 2008 at 12:42
I wouldn’t have Dunne on a free, He is a perpetual red card waiting to happen, slow and clumsy. I really do not see what everyone else see’s in him.
I would rather have Cuellar although even though I was trying to follow his play in the recent games didn’t see much of him.
28 MARK // Apr 28, 2008 at 12:43
I only found this site when i first heard you were after modric. he has since signed for the mighty spurs but i have still had to add this blog to my favourites. Seeing some of the platers you link yourselves to has had me in fits of laughter. But the idiots who are saying make a bid for berbatov really take the biscuit. Berbatov was a fan of sheare before he went to newcastle and pictures of him in a blackburn kit have been posted on spurscommunity. He loves the player not your shitty club!! Richard Dunne is exactly the level of player that you will be signing this summer. Portsmouth, man city, everton, villa blackburn and west sham will all have priority over you when it comes to signing players.

£4m Warren Barton was so bad he was replaced by local lad Stevie Watson. Barton gave 100% but was from the Bramble / Dabizas school of defending. One thing he definitely wasn’t was - quality. But hey it’s all opinions. I just happen to be right. If Dunne is the type of player we’re looking at, we’re not going anywhere fast.
34 Vitorbarbosa // Apr 28, 2008 at 13:05
I just think 5m is too much for a player who has only one year left on his contract. I’m not sure of his qualities neither.
However, what we need are clear, experience and leadership. Without this 2 criteria, our defence will continue to struggle.

Paris Saint Germain defender Mamadou Sakho has been scouted by Newcastle United as The Magpies compile a lengthy list of potential summer targets.
The Paris-born youngster captained PSG at the tender age of 17, a French record, and has also skippered France Under-17s.
Respected sources claim Newcastle posted representatives at the Coupe de la Ligue final, when Sakho impressed as his side overcame Lens in a dramatic match in front of Setanta Sports cameras, and a return trip to Paris is on the cards.

Cannot comment on Cuellar, but from the little I have seen (admittedly only on TV of Dunne this season, NO THANKS, he is very slow and ponderous and I have seen him left on his bum and beaten for speed on more than one occasion. Not good for a 28 year old.
I realise we cannot shop from the top drawer for this season but I am sure there is better out there than him. Let us hope this is just paper talk because of KK’s past association with citi.

HERE IS THE ARTICAL
DIMITAR BERBATOV grew up worshipping Alan Shearer — and slept in a No 9 Newcastle shirt!
The Spurs striker was bought a Toon strip bearing his name and Big Al’s number as an 18th birthday gift from his parents.
And that was the reason he chose the No 9 shirt when he moved to Tottenham in the summer of 2006.
The Bulgarian, 26, will be relishing the chance to walk out at St James’ Park on Monday night where Shearer was so popular for 10 years.
Berba’s mum Margarita, 45, a former champion handball player, recalls how the Shearer shirt became her boy’s prized possession.
She said: Dimitar wore this shirt all the time.
He even used to sleep in his Newcastle shirt! It’s that special to him.
Dimitar told me it was his dream to play for Newcastle United one day and wear the same shirt as Alan Shearer, who is my son’s hero.
Shearer was a major inspiration for him to work hard for himself and the team. He liked the fact that Alan Shearer scored goals but was not a selfish player.
Dimitar thinks this shirt may even have been a sign he was meant to play in England.
Berbatov was brought up in a sports-mad house. His father Ivan was a striker for CSKA Sofia but the youngster chose Newcastle as his team. Berbatov was such a fan of Toon legend Shearer he even tucked into the ex-England hitman’s famous pre-match meal of chicken and beans.
Shearer netted 148 league goals in 295 games for Newcastle and in his schooldays little Dimi got into trouble for scribbling Shearer’s name and records on his school books.
Then when he hit the big-time, he bought his mum a Honda Civic with a personalised number plate that included the No 9.
His old schoolmate Mario Bekov, who has known Berbatov for 20 years, said his admiration for the former Toon ace bordered on obsession.
He said: Dimitar never missed a Newcastle game when it was on television. And Shearer was up there with Pele as a God for him.
Another pal, Stefan Damianov, recalled how Berbatov considered himself to be an honorary Geordie as he followed the Toon and grew up in a mining region of Blagoevgrad.
He said: People in this part of Bulgaria like the Newcastle team especially and identify themselves with the football-mad culture of the people there and loyalty to the team.
PAST TIMES … Dimitar aged eight, flat in Blagoevgrad, and with dad Ivan, brother Asen and mum Margarita
Sadly for Berbatov, Shearer had hung up his boots by the time he made his first visit to Tyneside last December.
But this next visit will still be crucial with only goal difference separating Spurs from the bottom three at the start of the weekend.
Berbatov enjoyed an explosive first season in English football and scored 23 goals after his 10.9million move from Bayer Leverkusen.
He is idolised by Spurs fans and is already considered as good as White Hart Lane legends Alan Gilzean, Glenn Hoddle and Jurgen Klinsmann.
But Berbatov has not enjoyed as much success so far this term with just two goals to his name in nine appearances.
He remains highly ambitious and is unlikely to be impressed by Tottenham’s shaky start to the season.
His mum added: Dimitar has told me he’s hungry to win cups and wants to play in the Champions League in the next few years.
Tottenham came within a minute of taking all three points from Liverpool two weeks ago until Fernando Torres stole a point with his header.
And Berbatov’s fellow striker Darren Bent has called for a repeat of the Anfield performance as Spurs look to kick-start their league campaign.
England forward Bent is warning they could face an early bombardment from Toon — who have won three and drawn one of their league home games this term. The Geordies have also beaten Spurs 3-1 on their last two visits to St James’ Park.
Bent said: If we play like we did at Anfield then we can go there and get what we want.
Newcastle start really fast and we’ve got to be prepared for that — but we know what we’ve got to do.
People think it will be straightforward after what we did at Anfield but it doesn’t always work like that.

Yea Iain I read in the Spanish press that Amorebieta had a great game. He’s highly rated though and would cost in the region of 16 million according to the press. Quite a bit for a defender that’s unproven in the Premiership. Liverpool are also in for him so it’s unlikely but not impossible.
66 Spot The Zebra // Apr 28, 2008 at 16:13

Out of the two central defenders mentioned i think Richard Dunne is the more likely to be brought in.He is a solid no nonsense centre half with bags of Premiership experience who has already played under Keegan.Im sure i read he could buy himself out of his contract this summer so may come cheaper than the £5 million fee reported.

Dunne… No matter if he is your favorite, he would be a cheap choice his talent considered since he can buy himself out for 1,5 mill he wouldnt cost more than 4-5 mill (Which is better to Man City than nowt)… With the centre back in the bag we can use the big money on attacking talent, saving 3-4 mill for Bridge who cant get games for chelsea… That would leave us with a net spend 9 million if we put it high, leaving us about 30-40 million i would guess. No matter what happens, KK has made wonders with our current squad and will buy wisely so next season will be an improvement no matter… I have blind faith in him.

Dunne would be a really good buy for us. Thus wee lad is a rock. People say it’s his partner in the back with him that makes him look good but to be honest that’s more then a wee bit of bull. He’s been brilliant for Ireland as well. Current FAI player of the year after just beating Given out and preventing him winning 3 times in a row. Would be a fantastic buy, Given has immense trust in him as well. They work well together, a hell lot of MOTM awards between them. It’s usually one or the other who wins it. He’d be a fantastic buy though. I hope we get him. He’s very underrated. You wont think or even notice the difference he makes till he’s playing. But I swear to God he’d change or defence for the better in so many ways.
