The Sun is reporting today that Rangers are interested in signing Alan Smith from Newcastle for £5M.
Alan Smith – could be considering his future at Newcastle
Smith, 27, has failed to gain a regular place under Kevin Keegan and since he was dropped for the Birmingham game has never started a game since.
With Kevin Keegan only recently saying he had to play the same team, because of the lack of numbers at Newcastle, that doesn’t say much for Alan’s future prospects at the club, having only left Manchester United for first team football. And Kevin will be bringing in a crop of new players in the summer too.
Ranger’s manager Walter Smith is said to be ready to offer £5m for Alan, and since we only paid £6M for him last summer that could be a good deal for the club.
However, Smith is on around £60K a week at the Tyneside club and that could be a stumbling block.
Since it’s known that Keegan is keen on Ranger’s Spanish center-back Carlos Cuellar, there is an opportunity to have a swap deal – Cuellar plus £2M for Smith – or something along those lines.
That would seem to be a good deal for Newcastle, but we think Richard Dunne is number one choice for center-back, and with Sven Eriksson almost certainly leaving City in the summer, Newcastle may be able to get Dunne to Tyneside. Richard can also buy out his contract for £1M, so maybe we could even get a sweet deal for him. A potential win-win situation for Newcastle and Dunne.
We don’t know if Keegan wants two new center-backs in the summer, which may be overkill.
What do you think?
