Alan Smith Could Be Swapped For Cuellar

The Sun is reporting today that Rangers are interested in signing Alan Smith from Newcastle for £5M.

Alan Smith – could be considering his future at Newcastle

Smith, 27, has failed to gain a regular place under Kevin Keegan and since he was dropped for the Birmingham game has never started a game since.

With Kevin Keegan only recently saying he had to play the same team, because of the lack of numbers at Newcastle, that doesn’t say much for Alan’s future prospects at the club, having only left Manchester United for first team football. And Kevin will be bringing in a crop of new players in the summer too.

Ranger’s manager Walter Smith is said to be ready to offer £5m for Alan, and since we only paid £6M for him last summer that could be a good deal for the club.

However, Smith is on around £60K a week at the Tyneside club and that could be a stumbling block.

Since it’s known that Keegan is keen on Ranger’s Spanish center-back Carlos Cuellar, there is an opportunity to have a swap deal – Cuellar plus £2M for Smith – or something along those lines.

That would seem to be a good deal for Newcastle, but we think Richard Dunne is number one choice for center-back, and with Sven Eriksson almost certainly leaving City in the summer, Newcastle may be able to get Dunne to Tyneside. Richard can also buy out his contract for £1M, so maybe we could even get a sweet deal for him. A potential win-win situation for Newcastle and Dunne.

We don’t know if Keegan wants two new center-backs in the summer, which may be overkill.

What do you think?

oh alan smith will be good in the scotish league i feel, he might actually score, btw im being overly +ve on him because otherwise i get called a fair weather supporter.

he is a gem in the rough and can set the spl alight.

if we can get 2million and quellar for him that would be unbelievable. its more likely to be smith and 2million for quellar ed???

Ok, so good news, but just where do you, Ed, get the idea that Sven is almost certain to leave Man City in the summer?
It’s been documented in the gutter press that he’s had some talks with the new owner of Man City, but it’s never been said that he will be leaving.
Smith will do well at Rangers, like Chris Sutton did with Celtic, he’s about that level.
I’m always dubious about buying in players from the SPL. Just look at the players who shined up there, who did nothing in the EPL. Barry Ferguson for example.

My god that will be our best transfer of the summer. Smith offers the club nothing, he gets paid 60 k a week to run around like a loon, why we ever bought him i will never know – however will clearly be top goal scorer in the spl next year. His first goal in four years will start a top scorer in the spl run!

BSA put him on it, cos he’s his type of player, technically inept! Or as I like to say on a Saturday, a waste of chuffing space!

I wanna see our youth come through, I don’t think we need to desperately sign a big name CB when we have Edgar waiting in the wings.

Apparently Eriksson has told his players he will be leaving in the summer. Their owner Mr. Sinatrawhatnot isnt impressed by Citys season. The news is all over the Web in Norway today.

Would love to swap Smith for Cuellar. And I have never seen Cuellar play. But I cant see Smith moving to Scotland tbh

Villa will never sign for us, neither will Diego, Van der Vaart or Veloso! We are a poor club to come to due to our position in the country and in the league!
The fans are over critical, and can destroy players with their barbed chanting. Just look at Smithy!!
We should be looking at players like ebouie, djourou, flamini etc. Arsenal have many excellent players in reserve.(Did anyone see them last night on tv? Awesome innit!)They have all played excellent in the premiership and would make good signings if available. Bosh, theyre ya go, hows yer father and Arsenal 2 is born!!

    Mr T

Edgar is exactly what you say a player waiting in the wings, he is not premiership standard yet by a long way and we need one or even two centre backs to make sure there is sufficient cover and experience there.

Dunne – yes please, easier now Sven is going
Ashton – yes again, played our two young centre backs off the pitch on saturday and will work well with Owen and Martins. (he has always gone on about AS being his hero, time for KK to call in a favour from our club ambassador! “Hi Dean, Alan Shearer here. Come up north and become a god/idol like me!” think that might do the trick)

Smith is another wasteful high earner with limited ability. Even if we can’t get Cuellar get rid we dont need him. We can bring in Ashton as a replacement.

he is a striker who cant score goals and a midfielder who cant pass or tackle without fouling someone. 100% effort no doubt but hes not good enough, always a squad player. dunne would be good specially on a free.

drh. Fair point, I accept what your saying but personally I have confidence on his ability to make a quick jump up, and he’s only going to learn with experience. Although in the same breathe, if he’s training with better class than some of the numpties we have now….. it could work better.

    Dean Ashton should come home.

Cuellar for Smith seems a good deal. What has Dunne done for us to need him? And why Ashton? We do not need him either. Just paper talk I hope. Such players are steps backward. In fact plodders backward.

Dunne is a good solid no nonsense CB with PL experence. Ashton would be another good buy

unsure on dunne…could provoke a rift in the camp with him joining his old sparring buddy barton… as for cuellar, a read one comment saying remember boumsong..how could any of us forget and any doubters of the different classes of the epl and spl just have to take one look at that flop hopefully wise and co. are doing a good job finding a few commanding centre backs that could bring on taylor and hopefully some younger ones with a bit more experience than players such as edgar as they could bring each over on people like eziquel garay any one?

Have any of you lot seen Cuellar. He is probably
one of the best defenders in the UK never mind Scotland. He has been outstanding in Europe. He strolls throughgames and never breaks sweat. Its a huge insult to compare him with
    Boumsong.

YES PLEASE – even a straight swap without the £2m would be an acceptable deal IMO.
Smith is not NUFC material and doesn’t have a future in a KK team. £60k/week is two decent players’ wages down the drain week in week out!!!! An absolute farce!!!

Cuellarhas been outstanding albeit in an inferior league to the Prem. People worry about Cuellar cos of past experience with Boumsong (and quite understandably so) but Boumsong was never outstanding for Rangers. He was good but not outstandingly and consistantly brilliant – still had some Bramble moments.
Cuellar has been outstanding and consistant. Played brilliantly in UEFA cup too in a Rangers team now in the Semis and still fighting in 4 (or is it 3) competitions.

Time to wake up guys! First Modric, Henry and Deco. Then Ashton and Dunne. Now Cuellar (who IS good – don’t get me wrong). Soon we’ll be going for the likes of James Beattie, Francis Jeffers and Luke Chadwick to be more realistic.

however much anyone rates cuellar surely everyone would agree getting cuellar pxc for smith and giving rangers some cash would be an excellent deal for us.

maybe offer rozehnal and smith for cuellar.
