Alan Smith Not Headed To Rangers?

There have been reports coming from Glasgow, and presumably from manager Walter Smith, that he’s interested in Newcastle’s Alan Smith.

Alan Smith – wants to stay at Newcastle United

The link probably came from the time Smith spent some time as Sir Alex Ferguson’s no.2 at Old Trafford, and at that time he was said to be keen on the Yorkshireman.

Rangers have done very well in the UEFA Cup this year and they will have made some cash from their good run, and we would expect they are keen to strengthen their side for the European Champions League next season.

And of course, as well as that background, Alan Smith was last weekend seen watching Sunday’s Old Firm derby game against Celtic.

Alex Black, however, who is Alan’s agent, has said there is no truth in the rumors at all, and he told Sky Sports today:

“Alan has no intention of leaving Newcastle, he is happy at the club,” “All this Rangers talk has come about because he was at a couple of their games.”

“It was just a coincidence as Alan got tickets for the Old Firm game and he went with a few friends to experience a Rangers v Celtic game as he is a football fan.”

“Alan is not thinking about anything else but coming back fresh for next season and helping Newcastle to success.”

But we are not sure what future Alan will have at Newcastle. He cannot get a starting position right now, and with Kevin strengthening various positions in the summer, we cannot see Smith becoming a starter in Kevin’s new side.

He left Manchester United so he could get more games at Newcastle, so we’d be surprised if he would be happy with being only a squad player – but there again, we know he just loves playing for Keegan, so he may be content to help the club be as successful as possible, in whatever role Kevin will use him in.

If that’s his thinking it sounds good to us  -  but we’d still be surprised if that would be acceptable to Alan.

What do you think?

If what his manager says is true then I hope Smith changes his mind and want to move away. If he goes to Rangers, Timbuktu or another team; I don’t care at all as long as we get rid of him.

I don’t think we need to sell anyone and better that Smith stays as a good squad player than sell him on for a fraction of what we paid for him. We’d be better concentrating as Keegan says on buying a few quality players to increase our current squad. Particular area to strengthen is midfield.
Here is an excellent article on Newcastle’s midfield targets:

Alan Smith is a determined person and his thinking is that Keegan will give starting positions to whoever shows their best in training. Smith will be given an opportunity next year and that can only make him a better player.

it will be taken out of smiths hands anyway if keegan gets any good offers for him.

i think sometimes people forget how ruthless keegan can be when deciding who he wants at nufc.

hes crap he offers nothing even when he plays well ie completes a few passes wins a few tackles he will give away stupid fouls that cost the team.

ill support him however long he plays for nufc however i wont pretend hes any good, becuase he isnt he never has been anything more than an average pl player. and if we want to really compete for europe next season we need to improve the overall team quality as much as possible.

alan smith, the blokes kind of an enigma… he’s pretty pointless really isnt he. he might aswell be our no3 keeper cos he will fit in there as good as anywhere else. if i was keegan i would sell him for anything i could get my hands on……….
hey, did anyone else ever see that leeds game when he snogged woodgate after scoring a goal??

Can anyone who wants Smith to stay tell me what makes him a good player?

Can he win the ball in the air? NO

Can he pass the ball well? NO

Can he beat players with pace? NO

Can he beat players with skill? NO

    Is he particularly strong? NO

Does he have an eye for a goal? NO

He ticks no boxes whatsoever. Not fast enough to take the ball over the top. Not big or strong enough to take it on the chest. Not tall enough to take it in the air.

He has provided not one single goal assist and not one single goals.

It is no coincidence that since he has been dropped our fortunes have changed. Also, since the turnaround, the games I have seen at home have died a death once Smith has come on to the pitch.

    He is an awful player.

    Hello Friends,

I am studying a very nice offer from your club, Newcastle United.

Can someone answer a few questions for me?
Are there any nice Senegalese restaurants in Newcastle?
Is the weather really that bad?
Why should I pick Newcastle instead of Tottenham (who also just made me an offer?)

    Aw, WHY?..

…Don’t know about ‘Headed’ to rangers, it would have to be a bullet header…But maybe we could collectively drop-kick him there?..

End of the day as a striker Smith never scores and as a midfielder he never ” assists” and just gets endless yellow and red cards because lets face it, Smith is never going to be a member of Mensa. KK has to be ruthless, but then again with the modern day footballer, Smith will sit on 60K a week and there’s nothing KK can do. No one else would be stupid enough to offer that sort of money but Rangers do owe us big time for Boumsong. Smith must have some slight inkling even in the very deep recesses of his mind that he is not universally loved and is taking up a good player’s position in the squad. Also hope the rumour about Deco isn’t true. The guy is so past it, it was embarrassing.

Theres a big difference between Michael Owen and Alan Smith. Smith has shown us absolutly nothing to give us any hope that he will come good, he could well be our worst performing player this season and doesnt have a position. No wonder he wants to hang around, he knows he’ll not get the same wages elsewhere. What a joke to put him on them in the first place, terrible business and i reckon we’ll be stuck with him but he shouldnt be anywhere near our first team.

Am in Bens corner on this one but not quite as abusive.

I would love Smithy to stay. Strong squads are made up of people like him.
Remember he has also had a horrendous injury and nobody has mentioned that. People say Owen has lost a lot since his injury and a tear ago we were all slating him off and wanted rid but he has turned it around so I say stick with Smithy no matter what cos he will prove all the doubters wrong.
Am sure KK is of same mind.

Well Frankie, glad to hear that your so sure that you and Keegan share the same opinions on football.

And NO I dont think that strong squads are made up of people like him, sorry but that is absolutely ridiculous. He wouldnt get in Chelsea, Man U(theres a reason Fergie sold him), Liverpool, Arsenal squads and I doubt whether Redknapp, Ramos, Erikson, O Leary would want him in their squads.

A squad full of Alan Smiths would only take you one way – down.

    Andy,
We will just have to disagree on that one.
Not sure about KK’s and my opinions on football but am sure KK would like a squad full of players with Smithys attitude.
Why did Alex Ferguson pay £8m for him im the first place.
    He WILL come good.

    good point ^^^^

and btw i meant O Neill before when i said O Leary.

Also Frankie – i agree with you that his attitude is spot and do wish all other players had it. Maybe worth keeping in squad just for that but not for the wages he’ll be on and i still wouldnt play him.

Id be happy if i was proved wrong btw.
