Newcastle Could Be In For Joaquin

April 30th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 48 Comments

Newcastle United are reported to be interested in Valencia winger Joaquin.

Joaquin - target for Newcastle United

Joaquin has been a target before for Newcastle, and it’s not surprising that Kevin Keegan could see him as an excellent addition to Newcastle’s squad in the summer.

Joaquin was once a target for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea but he stayed at Real Betis, who he played for until 2006 when he moved to Valencia. He moved to Valencia for €25M, and signed a five year contract in August, 2006, with the choice of a further one year extension.

The news is that the Spanish international is being put up for sale by Valencia, and Newcastle United are expected to be amongst the clubs interested in the speedy and gifted winger.

Joaquin played 216 times for Real Betis from 1999-2006 and scored 32 goals. He has played for Valencia 57 times with 8 goals and has represented Spain 51 times scoring 4 international goals.

Joaquin (full name Joaquín Sánchez Rodríguez) turns 27 in July, and stands just under 5’11” tall.

Joaquín was a member of the Spanish squad at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan, and played again for Spain at Euro 2004 in Portugal, and was also at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

Comments welcome.

Joaquin was immense is his last few seasons at Betis (2003-2006) but then he moved to Valencia, picked up a few injuries and has been very inconsistent for then so far. But if we can get him playing like his last few seasons in Betis then hes worth a lot and is a hell of a player.

Undoubted talent .Seen him quite a few times in la liga ,mainly when he was at betis, technically very good ,really pacey, good balance ,use either foot. But heard stories that he is quite moody,(throws a strop if not selected),so would be a gamble 4 kk,but definately a keegan type player!

  • 3 toon1978 // Apr 30, 2008 at 21:05

Not building up hopes at all the MODRIC scenario has burnt my fingers big time so with names of this calibre beeing linked with the toon will be taken with a pinch of salt.

  • 4 joe // Apr 30, 2008 at 21:06

super player and could be ideally suited to the Prem with his pace. Love to see him in a black n white shirt. :)

  • 5 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 30, 2008 at 21:09

yes tom-toon- he was great for betis, in his last season he wanted to come to us, so said ssn. but he has seemed to come off the boil and has lost his pace abit, 8 million should be at most we pay for him, but i cant see it happening

  • 6 ToonDaft // Apr 30, 2008 at 21:11

Would prefer SWP tbh - loads of rumours over the years casts serious doubts over his temperament - very gifted player but a huge gamble

  • 7 Jim // Apr 30, 2008 at 21:14

Have I mentioned SONE ALUKO? (lol). He’s a similar type of player to Joaquim (seriously) but is more left sided.

The thing that bothers me about Joaquim is his ability in the Premiership… and his goal scoring record. I think he’s technically gifted but I wonder what he would be like with less time on the ball going forward. He also doesn’t seem to track back very much to support the defence from what I’ve seen of him.

dont trust spanish players in this league really , but im starting to come round a bit .
our climate is no good for them , they like there sun and sipin pina colada’s like deco ( and ronaldinho!)

  • 9 Tom // Apr 30, 2008 at 21:29

dont trust spanish players??? what about torres? fabregas? our very own jose enrique?

  • 10 Punk Skunk // Apr 30, 2008 at 21:40

    Arteta, Alonso!..
    …In fact, 1/2 of liverpool’s team!..

  • 11 KKK // Apr 30, 2008 at 21:55

    Albert Luque???

  • 12 gordond // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:11

    Deco & Ronaldinho are’nt Spanish.

  • 13 Momo // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:19

Bit unrealistic here, who came up with this ridiculous speculation. Yes i would love to have him at the toon but we’ve been linked with so many big players and never seem to get them so im not getting any hopes up for him.

  • 14 gonufc // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:24

Quality player, seen him loads on tv and once live when i was on holiday in spain. Just watching him warm up was impressive enough, he was REALLY impressive.

  • 15 Gooderz // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:28

Valencia’s players aren’t so unrealisitc. They are in financial turmoil right now and can’t even install Marcelino, the promising young coach we were linked to and not the ex-defender, as their new manager. So anyone not in complete favour at Valencia could be attainable, for the right price.

Also on SSN we could getquick revenge on Spurs by hijacking one of their moves; Alex Madlung for £2m. Okay, perhaps not, but an ‘unknown English side’ is mentioned alongside Everton and Spurs for the 6ft 4 defender.

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:30

Not even worth trying to hijack a deal for Madlung, he’s gonna be a sub for the team that buys him no doubt.

  • 17 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:56

Just been watching the CL semi-final in a pub half full with Liverpool fans. That was good, f*cking scousers want to go back to their own city.

  • 18 Fernando // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:56

this wud be a dream come true

  • 19 ToonKing // Apr 30, 2008 at 23:20

he didn’t play much this season but if he could recapture his form he would be a massive player for us……………………..
slim chances of getting him though…… :(

  • 20 ronaldeano // Apr 30, 2008 at 23:38

A fresh start at Newcastle would be good for Joaquin and the club. He is a fantastic player and he would fit in well with KK’s style of football. I hope it happens

  • 21 Leo // Apr 30, 2008 at 23:47

if he has lots of pace, good, also i dont think kk will mind him not tracking back if he is setting goals up.

isnt he good at freekicks also?

  • 22 valle // May 1, 2008 at 0:19

Remember him being touted as a great wing in his Betis days, but dunno anymore…

  • 23 Oba 9 // May 1, 2008 at 0:22

ronaldinho deco spanish you have been downing pina colada in the sun

  • 24 Spyro // May 1, 2008 at 0:41

he is a great talent, he has been unlucky with injuries and his form has suffered because of it. No doubt he would still improve our squad. Someone tried to say this guy was useless earlier, how ridiculous. i hate it when people base their whole opinions on a single season

  • 25 Fernando // May 1, 2008 at 0:52

spyro, what would you think of getting shevchenko?

  • 26 Piers Ross // May 1, 2008 at 3:39

Would be a terrific signing. Good player, great with his feet and fast as well. However, he might be out of our league. Most likely, he will sign with a bigger club……. just like Modric.

  • 27 KKN39 // May 1, 2008 at 5:08

prefer David Silva to Joaquin - younger, more versatile & consistent, and possibly cheaper. we missed out Modric then Silva may be closest alternative. plus if we need to get rid of either Duff or Zog (each has his own problem) and Silva is the ideal replacement. a better candidate for RW will be Arshavin - he WILL do the job for us in AM / RW / FW position. in Silva, Arshavin, Boussoufa and one of Duff / Zog we have four flying wingers and skilful AM who can terrify any defense in EPL. Milner can be sold to fund the the rebuild - at best he can be a squad player for CM but never a top winger, but for CM position younger and cheaper Giles Barnes will fit the bill better.

  • 28 Hadji // May 1, 2008 at 6:45

KKn39…You can forget about Silva cause he’s going to Barca.
”We ‘re after this,we’re after that”.Why can’t we be little more discrete when we’re after someone.

  • 29 Toooooooooooooooooon // May 1, 2008 at 7:00

I bought him in every FM i play………we should bought him !!!!!!!!!1

  • 30 Neilos // May 1, 2008 at 8:36

Whats the point some one else probs tottenham will sign him before we do anything about it.

  • 31 Eric // May 1, 2008 at 8:59

If Joaquin available then go for him, but agree with Toondaft in that SWP may be a better long term prospect. KK must, and will of course, show some caution about these temperamental players.

  • 32 ronaldeano // May 1, 2008 at 9:07

@ Eric i agree SWP would be a better long term prospect, but KK’s man-management skills are the best in the buisness. Joaquin is a top player and we would get him for far less than SWP, taking into account the financial turmoil that Valencia are in

  • 33 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 1, 2008 at 9:15

Eren Derdiyokc is desperate to sign for us, his record is very good for a 19 year old.

  • 34 Luke // May 1, 2008 at 9:18

Oh yeah… this is the guy that says his mother breast fed him til he was 9 right?

  • 35 John // May 1, 2008 at 9:26

were did this story come from ..TriBULL no doubt

  • 36 figsdad // May 1, 2008 at 9:51

No but when anal oliver gets wind of it he will blabber it oot the rest of the media and other teams will catch on..

so its a no go that one…

  • 37 mark // May 1, 2008 at 10:10

err, Hamas, I dont like scousers either, but your name doesnt sound English mate!

and if you were born here, someone in your family wouldnt have been, somewhere along the line, so stop the racist stuff as your in the same boat.

  • 38 next toon manager // May 1, 2008 at 10:28

    newcastle team should be
given, beye, dunne, cuellar, bridge, joaquin, mountinho, geremi, mcgeady, gomis, owen

  • 39 toonhitman // May 1, 2008 at 10:39

what about lennon on the right, young and fast could be a good signing for us,we should go for prem players and once were up there with the big boys then go for the big buys

  • 40 Spyro // May 1, 2008 at 10:53

shut up mark, who are you to say who can and cannot say ‘i hate scousers’. So you have to be born here to say that? Or you have to have British roots? pull the other one

  • 41 Obafan // May 1, 2008 at 13:05

    Message to KK:
PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT THE SEMI’S TONIGHT AND WATCH ARSHAVIN!!!
He would be the ideal player to buy to play at our RW; he is also capable of playing CAM or even as a 2nd striker.

Joaquin: I know I’ve mentionned a few times that it is not honnest to compare players from their origine or the club they played for, but i think Joaquin could be a second Luque. Do not forget that Joaquin recently did not play good (injured atc.) and that Luque was on his best form when arrived at Tyneside. It would be a huge risk and an expensive one 8M!!

  • 42 Oba // May 1, 2008 at 14:18

Arshavin is banned for tonights semi, mate.

  • 43 Hamas (51times) // May 1, 2008 at 14:32

Mark, I don’t know where that’s come from, I have no problem with people of other races. I just hate Scousers.

  • 44 deano // May 1, 2008 at 15:28

joquing is a WORLD CLASS player
luque was good indvidule who did not pass AND TOO SLOW FOR PREM

    sell milner 8m
get joquing in FOR 8M IS A BARGIN
    good pace
    good shot
    very quick
    can pass the ball
    can beat his man
can put super crosses in box unlike milner
    great technacly

    GREAT PLAYER LIKE DAVID GINOLA

    CM MOUTANO
SC GOMIES BIT OF A GAMBLE
CD BRAZAGLE IS FANTASTIC WATCH HIM TONIGHT

  • 45 iain // May 1, 2008 at 16:24

hes just like luque imensly talented but tempremental and inconsistent.

not sure hes the kind of spanish player to put up with english weather either.

the one things ive always thought of joaquin is that he doesnt perform often enough for a player with so much natural talent.

keegan could get him playing knowing keegan but its a big risk.

i agree i would rather have arshavin give a straight choice of the two.

  • 46 OzZyMagpiE // May 1, 2008 at 16:29

  • 47 len // May 1, 2008 at 17:32
