Newcastle coach Chris Hughton has revealed today that Kevin Keegan lets coaches Steve Round and Chris lead the Newcastle training sessions.
Chris Hugton - leads the training with Steve Round
Chris Hughton was recruited by Kevin shortly after he returned to Newcastle, to replace then coach Nigel Pearce, who took the manager job at Southampton.
Chris has turned out to be an excellent acquisition for Newcastle and was initially brought in to shore up the defense. Chris talked about Kevin today to the Newcastle Journal:
“At some clubs you have a manager who does all of the training and it’s very difficult to do,†“When you watch Kevin he allows myself and Steve Round to take most of the training and he then has an overview and changes things that need changing.â€
“Kevin has a way of working – he wants players to enjoy training and to get fulfillment from training. He wants them to have a spring in their step and a smile on their face – that’s what he wants and I think that is what he’s got now.â€
“What I’ve seen from the time I’ve been here is that he has focused on that and from that you can go on to get results. Once you’ve cracked that it gives you the confidence and that is such an important thing – it helps you win football matches.â€
“One thing I saw from the outside when Kevin first came in was that he had some terribly-difficult matches when he was settling in. The big change was the Birmingham game away from home – we should have gone on and won it but despite not winning we gained terrific confidence from that.â€
“We changed the system to go to a three up front and it came off. Confidence is a big thing – you look at Sunderland and it wasn’t one of our best performances but we won the game. It was the same (when we drew) against West Ham. They are the type of results you get when you’re confident.â€
It’s been a terrific turnaround for Newcastle. It’s something the Newcastle fans expected, when Kevin was first appointed, but it took a little longer than we all thought.
But it’s history now, and Kevin has already worked his magic at the club. But we have to give credit to Steve and Chris for doing their significant part, because they are two very good football coaches, and Kevin is obviously very happy to have them at the club.
Chris Hughton is an upbeat guy and we have to think he just loves working with Kevin, whose whole strategy with football is that it should be enjoyed.
It should be enjoyable for the players, because then they will play at their best, and it should definitely be enjoyable for the fans. What a concept.
And, we hear, it can even be enjoyable for managers too – especially those of the caliber of Kevin Keegan.
