Barton Has Terrific Engine On Him

One problem player Kevin Keegan has had to handle when he arrived back at Newcastle was Joey Barton.

Joey Barton - fantastic fitness

Barton had a good game against West Ham in the 2-2 draw at Upton Park last Saturday, and he made Oba’s goal by putting the ball straight through to the Nigerian. That goal from Martins ignited Newcastle’s comeback from 2-0 down, and a header from Geremi had us all square at the break.

Kevin Keegan talked about Joey today to the Evening Chronicle:

“I just thought Joey kept going against West Ham last Saturday.” “When some around him were finding it tough, he just kept going.”“He has got a terrific engine on him.” “I always think Joey gets more into a game as it progresses.”

“You know at 70 or 80 minutes, he’s still going to be making the same runs.” “He’s still got the same determination and fitness levels.”

“Like Oba, he gives us something that nobody else does.” “And if you’ve got a lot of players giving you something that nobody else does, and put it together and work hard, sometimes you can fashion a great team out of it.”

Joey is another player who Kevin has somehow got the very best out of, since he arrived back in January. There’s no doubt Joey has skills galore, but it’s his temperament which is the worrying thing about him, and we have no idea what will happen when he goes to Court in late June to face charges of assault.

The result of that trial will decide what Joey’s future at Newcastle will be. We hope he gets through it OK, but if he’s found guilty he will have to pay for his stupid ways of the past.

As far as this afternoon is concerned, we expect Barton to put in another top display for the team.

Comments welcome.

Some people take longer to mature than others. We need his efforts today though and we know KK will select him. Joey can afford a better lawyer than us - we’d be banged up by now for what he is supposed to have done. He has not been found guilty yet anyway! Hope he is guilty of getting one in against the Chelsea Buns.

Barton is a good little player. KK is right - his best attribute is his engine, drive, and determination!

It’s a big if, but hopefully the lad can push on next season. he has the potential, but his problematic disciplinary problems are there for all to see.

Lets hope Keegan can keep him on the straight and narrow.
