Oba Martins Can Test Chelsea Defense

Newcastle manager Keegan believes the great Oba Martins could be an important player for Newcastle in today’s game against title-chasing Chelsea.

Oba Martins – his pace could rattle John Terry

The Newcastle boss talked to the Evening Chronicle today:

“I thought Oba was outstanding against West Ham.” “Oba’s got that trick. He comes out of a situation, and you think: ‘How did he do that?”

“He did it again. It was a great goal he scored at Upton Park, and great ball from Joey Barton. It was a good finish.”

“Oba is working very hard for the team, and he’s trying to do things that, probably, in the past, he hasn’t done so easily.”

“He is still only 24, and still learning the game, and we’ve seen what he’s capable of when you put him into the mix with what we’ve got.

“Mark Viduka holds the ball up so well, and Michael Owen is so assured on the ball. You know he’s not going to give it away too often, you’re surprised if he does.”

Actually, Oba is still just 23 and doesn’t turn 24 until this October.

And there were lots of reports over the weekend that Arsene Wenger has Oba top of his transfer list for the summer, and is willing to test Newcastle’s resolve with a £15M bid.

But we’re sure Kevin realizes just how good Martins is, and he will only become a better player under Kevin Keegan, who himself was a world-class player in his day.

Oba could really test the pace of Chelsea’s John Terry, who is an outstanding center-back, but has hardly played against a player like Oba Martins, who is quite unique, and you just never know what he will do next.

Arsene Wenger knows a good player when he sees one, and it’s a huge compliment to the Nigerian, that he’s admired Martins ever since he arrived at Newcastle from Inter-Milan two years ago.

And who can ever forget that goal he scored against Tottenham last season, it was a goal to remember that came out of absolutely nothing.

What a player.

Oba definitely has a role today. Testing the defence in order to put some past Chelsea’s goalie. We must not be overawed. Must find out who the referee will be. We need Faye in the back four too.

The ref is Steve Bennett. Chelsea have not lost a game when he’s done 4 matches with them this season. Time he got one shoved too me thinks! So, we may have 12 men on the pitch for the Chelsea Buns then?
