Keegan Doesn’t Know What Transfer Funds Available

It will probably surprise a lot of Newcastle fans that Kevin Keegan doesn’t know how much he has to spend in the summer.

Kevin Keegan – has no idea how much he has to spend

Kevin was asked this morning how much he has available and he told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle:

“I don’t know. I have not been told. I don’t know what is here if I am honest.” “That’s not a problem. We will just have to wait and see.”“You really need to be talking to Chris Mort or Denis Wise about the finances for this football club.”

“It’s not my job and I have never been involved in it.” “That’s the truth. I cannot help you on that other than saying my job is to ask Tony Jimenez to go and get players.”

“I give them a player and they go and try and get him for us.” “I am saying that whatever finance will be there, it will not be enough to take us into the top four.”

Of course we wouldn’t expect Kevin to reveal how much he has, even if he knew the amount. The important thing for Kevin is that he identify the players he wants and let the Recruitment boys go out and get them – and we expect that’s happening on a few fronts right now.

It would be nice to announce a good signing soon, just to get us off to a good start for the summer.

Comments welcome.

The more money Kev says he has the higher the price will be demanded by the clubs selling!!!

KK is saying it will be difficult to attract players with no European football etc. Well the reality is that with players like Owen, Martins and Viduka at the club we should be able top convince players that we are moving in the right direction. I am suer there are plenty of ambitious players who would love t have a striker like Owen playing alongside them, we just have to sell what is good about this great club and then show them where we want to be. Remember that Shearer was instrumental in the signing of Owen and now Owen must do the same to help attract quality to the club.

We haven’t even got to the opening of the window, and already we’re baying for a signing/worrying about the money. Why would Keegan know, it’s been clear from the outset that Wise would be dealing with that.

Regardless of budget (it needs to be hefty) we are very very thin on numbers.GK side not bad.Defence apart from four regulars we have nobody without youngsters.Midfield the same only Barton and Butt (hes getting on) are wotrthy of a start.Up front the three regs but nowt else.I have left out on purpose the likes of DUFF SMITH ZOGGERS CACAPA ROZZ GEREMI cause I hope they are all elsewhere come next year.OH DEAR OH DEAR.

Mort has always said there is no set transfer budget. Whatever it takes to bring in the targets KK wants, is what will be spent. That could be £20 million, £50 million, or £100 million

Money has never been the issue – the problem is convincing the top class players to ignore european football and london, to come here.

I dont see what difference it makes wether he knows the exact amount or not – after all he dosent know the asking price for his transfer targets either, all that, it would appear is being dealt with by Wise and Jimenez.
Keegan has given a list of his transfer targets and the ‘team’ led by Wise is out there trying to sign them – so whats the problem?
Just journalistic trouble making again, no foundation and pure hear say – Im getting sick of it already.

i think we will be thinner on the ground next season cos as well as showing not alot of enthusiasum at getting the right players in, mort and his growing band of henchmen cant even be arsed to even speak to owen and sort him out…even though kk openly begged them to weeks and weeks ago. plus taylor, zogs, martins, emre all looking touch and go. plus carr, ramage and troisi gone already. i think we are down to about two players left in the team now. i heard betty the tea lady is lined up in mid field for our last game. i also wonder if we will be looking for a new manager before the start of next season too????? the henchmen certainly dont seem to be arsed at anythingtheir own manager asks them for do they?

THERE IS NO CHANCE THAT WE CAN ATTRACT TOP PLAYERS FOR ONE THING WE ARE NOT IN EUROPE AND WE ARE NOT A BIG CLUB LIKE EX THE TOP FOUR. WE LOST WOODGATE AND NOW MODIC AND TO A TEAM LIKE SPURS/

Man City has signed a few top players without Euro footy. It’s true that players like Bianchi fail to settle in the EPL, but that’s life.

Why would KK need to know how much money is available??

Surely its up to him to say “these are my 4 choices for CF” “DM” etc in order of preference and leave it up to Mort to get the best one of each group that they can.

That could make a price range of anything from £20 million to £120 million depending on which names are on the list and which ones they actually manage to sign. Its up to Mort, Wise and the recruitment crew to get of their backsides and make it happen.

When they bid £20 million for KK’s first target Modric it proves that money is no issue to our board.

Chelsea were the same as us. It has taken them 5 years to put that squad together. KK has only been here 6 months and has yet to dip into the transfer market. His frustration yesterday came from looking at his bench and seeing no one there that could change the game.

kevin is talking out of his arse i mean if we attracted players like martins and owen and viduka and emre then i bet we could attract top quality players that COULD take us to top four or five easily.
    like lennon or swp
and risse and dunne and crouch
i think these would be enough to take us to top 5 and if we get lucky we might get into top four:

    here are the starters:

    Crouch/viduka
    owen
    martins
    lennon
    butt
    barton
    risse
    dunne
    taylor/faye
    beye
    given/harper

    good enough aye

Im glad kk cleared up his post match comments. It didnt sound too good ,but now i understand where he is coming from.We cant attract or afford the players the top 4 are after ,and if we could they wouldnt come anyway (no euro football),so we have to go 4 realistic targets eg gomis ,dunne ,riise/shorey,cueller ,and i reckon we could get joaquin as valencia are fuc&*d.When spurs are at sjp next make sure we boo that wa*£er modric!!

Didn’t like hearing Kev speak like that yesterday. Not because of what he said, he’s right there. More…that it’s him saying it. He might argue to the contrary, but I’m really not sure his heart’s in it so much anymore.

I was disappointed when I realised it would be Wise etc talking to players and not KK himself, but I’m not sure he’s the man to sell it anymore. I’m in full support of what he’s achieving on the pitch though.

I think if we sign 3 players that will be 1 each for wise and the recruitment “team” that to me sounds like a great value investment by ashley…yeah right.

I have repeated myself several times in recent weeks our chairman will not be spending big in the summer and my gut feeling is both Owen and Martins will be off as well..in the window.

Expect a summer of steptoe re-runs,oh we almost got hims,so close yet so far etc

The recruitment team to me (team my arse)will sign a couple of Euro kids another goalkeeper probably.

God all this transfer activity is going to be just like the winter one poor…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

our last game of 07/08 season is against everton realistically their squad is only two good signings ahead of ours artetta and lescott playing them this weekend will be a far more realistic yardstick for us at the moment than a plucky display against chelsea(could be prem champs and champs champs)kevs statement after the everton game should be interesting i have a feeling in my water that next year could suprise a few geordies howay the lads

I think there will be money to spend it’s just the present board are not going to start shouting we have ***million to throw around like fat Fred did, thereby inflating the fees of even the most average players. (Boumsong)

Ashley has invested a huge amount of his money into the club, he is hardly likely to want to see it all go down the drain for want of a few more millions invested. I am sure the money will be there if KK wants it.

And remember KK didn’t really break the bank last time out he is a frugal yorkshireman Shearer was the biggest transfer, but the likes of Cole, Baty, Sellars didnt exactly break the bank.

KK is no ones fool he is telling us don’t get carried away, don’t start dreaming and looking at players who wont come here. He is just being KK always honest always sensible.

I find it strange that without the season ended they are talking about not possible to get top players. What is happenning to our team? I think if you can persuade them to come to build something special that lots of players would like to be part of it. It is possible a few targets will say ‘no’, but if you don’t try you will never know. I think there is too much negativity about the transfers.

We shall all see what will happen in the summer, but one thing is important that we strengthen our team, cause otherwise Europe will not be in the frame next season aswell.

I can’t see anything wrong in what KK has said. It’s right not to say how much you have to spend on transfers.

As for the criticism of the staff who have been brought in, personally I’m delighted that we have a team of people alongside KK himself who are there to (a) provide him with well researched suggestions for new players and (b) deal with any transfer negotiations.

As long as KK has the final say in the matter (other than where the Board put a financial limit on his ambitions, which is the same at any club) then all this extra manpower can only be good. It allows us to cover far more potential players through scouting and frees up Kevin to work on getting the team playing well.

I am happy about the sturcutre that we have at the club thou.
It is strucutred like a proper bussiness, organised, and thats what you need for success. Keegan gets the best out the players on the pitch, and they handle all the higher tier stuff.

all i can say is anything is better that fat freddy shepeard, with his dodgy dealings.
How could newcastle make such a big loss yet him and the board annouced profit?!!! thats not how bussiness works!

    Get shearer on board….please!!!!!!

He said he may join KK when his other contractual obligations were completed (MOTD, Sport relief etc.). He should be involved in a coaching capacity and recruitment asap at the close of the season. Shearer and KK would have a lot of pulling power and many younger players will probably be awed by a recent star like shearer then possibly KK and KK will have the charisma.

Wise and Co scout the players to buy, KK and shearer to recruit them. We should go for a good calibre signing first, tie them up then the rest will follow like domino’s. For instance, if Modric had signed (or anyone close to his ability), others would say, well if one of Europe’s brightest stars has gone, why not me.

KK – please promise you will be involved in selling the club to the player! Shearer – your club needs you, please respond! You were the greatest player on the pitch, now you can do great things off it.
