There is news today that Chelsea are ready to allow Nicolas Anelka to move on in the summer.
Nicholas Anelka – while at Bolton
Chelsea signed Anelka from Bolton in January, so it’s just five months after signing the French striker for £15M. This would be Anelka’s 9th move in his career, and his total transfer fees in those moves is around £85M.
Anelka, who is now 29, has failed to make an impact at Chelsea, and of course Kevin Keegan is only too well aware of the Frenchman’s ability, since he played for him at Manchester City.
Nicholas’ glowing comments about Keegan, when Kevin was appointed at Newcastle in January, suggest he would be only too happy to play again for the Newcastle manager.
We think Kevin and Newcastle will be interested, because Kevin has already talked about moving quickly, if players you don’t expect, are suddenly put on the market.
He would be a great acquisition for Newcastle, because he can play the hold up game that Viduka plays so well. But Viduka is injured a lot, and he may be out until December with his Achilles tendon problem. Graeme Souness was interested in Anelka a few seasons back, when he managed Newcastle.
And don’t believe all the sulk stories you hear about Anelka, those were when Nicholas was much younger, and he’s matured a lot since then.
He’s played for France 44 times and scored 11 goals, and started his career at PSG in 1995. He moved to Arsenal in 1997, when he was just 18 tears old, and has so far played for 9 different clubs. He played 65 games at Arsenal scoring 23 goals, before moving to Real Madrid in 1999.
He was at Manchester City from 2002 – 2005, played 89 games and scoring 38 goals – not too bad.
But of course there will be other clubs in the mix if he does become available.
